Johnny Greenwood is scoring Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film.
The news comes via an interview Greenwood did with the Guardian promoting his new eight-hour organ composition. Towards the end of the interview, Greenwood was asked about his other projects and he confirmed that he’s actively working on the score for Anderson’s next film.
“I’m incredibly lucky that Paul indulges me and gives me so much time to experiment and compose,” he said. “That’s not usually the case in Hollywood, where the soundtrack writers are often very far down the food chain, and are sometimes given only a couple of days to bash out a complete score.”
The as-yet-untitled film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, and Teyana Taylor, is currently shooting in California. A release date has been set for August 8th, 2025 through Warner Bros.

It’s only fitting that on the day the score drops for Challengers, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke’s first score since Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria would arrive. The Radiohead and Smile frontman’s latest work is the 12-track score for Daniele Luchetti’s Confidenza aka Trust, the Italian director adaptation of Domenico Starnone’s novel.
A collaboration with producer Sam Petts-Davies, the London Contemporary Orchestra, and a jazz ensemble featuring Tom Skinner and Robert Stillman, as reported by Stereogum, it’s not just an instrumental production as Yorke provides vocals throughout.
The film, which premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year and opens in Italy this week, stars Elio Germano as a teacher in his forties named Pietro Vella who works in a rundown Roman high school. “If I were you, I’d run away/Get out while you still can,” Thom Yorke sings on his new song “Knife Edge.” “‘Cause this to me is life or death/And all I think about.” The pensive song, which ambles along slowly with piano and sparse strings, comes off the soundtrack to Confidenza, a new film by director Daniele Luchetti (My Brilliant Friend).
The music video for the tune shows footage from the movie, which is based on author Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same title about a doomed couple.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at several music videos by Luca Guadagnino. Luca Guadagnino's films are vibrant and lush, pulsating with life and a heartbeat, like music. He is often one to curate his soundtracks carefully, with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Harry Nilsson, Captain Beefheart, Sufjan Stevens, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke and John Adams showing up on his soundtracks. Sometimes he chooses pre-existing tracks, but more often he asks his favorite artists to provide the sonic backdrop for his films. It is fitting that a few of the music videos Guadagnino directed are for tracks tailor made for his own features, starting...

If anyone in Hollywood knows The Beatles‘ songs, it’s Evan Rachel Wood. She was in one of the biggest Beatles movies. She named her favorite Beatles song and named some others that might have influenced Radiohead.
Evan Rachel Wood’s favorite Beatles song that was in her movie ‘Across the Universe’
Wood’s first major movie role was as Lucy (get it?) in the Fab Four jukebox musical Across the Universe. One of the most famous musical numbers in the movie is a hallucinogenic staging of “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” During a 2007 interview with The News-Times, Wood was asked to pick her favorite Beatles songs.
“It’s hard, because it depends on where you are in your life and what day it is, because they really covered everything,” she replied. “So right now, hmm, recently, I would sing ‘Happiness Is a Warm Gun.’ I got into that because of Across the Universe.

Across his nine features thus far, Paul Thomas Anderson has never had a prime summer release, but that is about to change when it comes to his currently untitled, maybe Vineland tenth feature. With production still underway across California with the cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti, Warner Bros. has now set an August 8, 2025 wide release, including an IMAX run, for what they describe as an “event film.”
It’s not the first time the director’s work has been seen on an IMAX screen as his Thom Yorke collaboration Anima received a limited run in the format. Though no IMAX cameras have been spotted on set thus far, VistaVision cameras have been seen shooting in 35mm, which should look gorgeous if 70mm prints are made. Thom Yorke has composed the soundtrack for Italian director Daniele Luchetti’s relationship drama “Trust,” which will soon launch in competition from the Rotterdam Film Festival.
Yorke’s work with Luchetti on “Trust” marks the second feature fully scored by the Radiohead and the Smile frontman since working on Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 “Suspiria” remake. The following year, in 2019, Yorke contributed to Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn.”

With Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood comprising two-thirds of the Smile’s lineup, the band is unlikely to ever escape comparisons to Radiohead. There’s a certain undefinable quality to the latter group’s music that courses conspicuously through the Smile’s Wall of Eyes, but there are also some more easily identifiable similarities between the two bands.
For one, most of the eight tracks here are built around drumbeats that help to anchor ephemeral melodies. On the title track, ambient synths ebb and flow, washing over the song’s acoustic guitars in a way that’s reminiscent of Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely.” Elsewhere, the surreal electric guitar of the eight-minute “Bending Hectic” serves as a touchstone around which fever-pitched synths continually circle, similar to those on albums like Hail to the Thief.

Thom Yorke has announced he composed the score for Italian filmmaker Daniele Luchetti’s new film, Confidenza.
Confidenza, which translates to Trust in English, is adapted from Domenico Starnone’s 2019 novel of the same name. Starring Elio Germano, Vittoria Puccini, and Isabella Ferrari, the movie centers around an affair between a teacher named Pietro and his former student Teresa.
Luchetti is best known for his work on acclaimed films like The Yes Man and The Ties. He also directed Season 3 of the Italian HBO drama My Brilliant Friend. Confidenza is set to premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam later this week, but a theatrical release date has not been revealed. Watch a teaser clip below.
In 2018, Yorke unveiled his first original film score for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake. One year later, he contributed the song “Daily Battles” to the soundtrack for Edward Norton’s crime drama Motherless Brooklyn.

The release of a new Radiohead album is greeted in certain circles as a kind of holy occasion, a time to drop everything else going on in your life and commence Deep Listening.
We have not witnessed such a hallowed event since 2016, when Radiohead dropped A Moon Shaped Pool, and a new album after such a wait sure would be welcome. Sometimes, though, it’s nice to see what the members of a great band can do when working outside such weighty expectations. That’s the story of the Smile,...

When The Smile first premiered the single “Friend of a Friend,” it was to an eager audience in Croatia. During that show, back in 2022, the trio made up of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner revealed that the song had been written that same day. At the time, it was only a skeleton of the song it would come to be as the Radiohead side-project released “Friend of a Friend” as the latest single from their upcoming record Wall of Eyes.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien has given fans an update on his next solo album in a message that also calls for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.
In an Instagram post, O’Brien thanked his “little community” of fans and explained that he had needed a break. “I’m deep into my next record, and deep in the process,” he wrote. “I will share some more soon … from music to influences to gear .. all of it… it’s been and continues to be a journey..Sending love and warmth from me and Ziggy.”
Earlier in the message, O’Brien apologized for not commenting on the heightened Gaza conflict earlier. “Like so many of you I have found the events of October 7 and what has followed too awful for words .. anything that I have tried to write feels so utterly inadequate,” he said. “Ceasefire now. Return the hostages.

To produce the distinct sound design for “The Zone of Interest,” Johnnie Burn (sound designer and re-recording mixer) had to conduct a ton of research including reading novels and the testimonies of guards and prisoners at Auschwitz. From there he was able to create a template to frame the sounds of the movie. “I made a document that was about 600 pages long that catalogued all of the planes, automobiles, guns and everything that I needed to record, but more importantly, what to go and find so that I could reenact it,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). This led to a year-long quest to record different sounds including people playing in parks, people shouting in pain, rioters in Paris and young men shouting at 3:00 am as they exited a club. “We just knew that to have sound that was going to work,...

In between feature films Phantom Thread and Licorice Pizza, Paul Thomas Anderson directed a 15-minute musical film that was released on Netflix in June 2019. This accompaniment to Thom Yorke’s titular album opens with a journey through the subway, where many passengers wearing dark-coloured clothes struggle to stay awake before a synchronized dance routine unfolds.
What unfolds is a mind-bending piece focusing on Yorke, escaping the subway setting to depict phenomenal visuals while employing dream logic so effectively. Shadows and lighting are expertly used to paint a visually stunning picture, gorgeously utilizing colour in ways which make the screen pop so vividly.
Also effectively utilized is the physical prowess of the performers, using Charlie Chaplin-style physicality to bring alive this tale about workers who no longer have control over their own bodies.

Paul Thomas Anderson is no stranger to directing music videos. Hell, he’s basically the personal videographer for Haim. And while his videos for that band typically are fun, vibrant, and a little silly sometimes, he’s bringing a whole new vibe for his most recent music video, The Smile’s “Wall of Eyes.”

Paul Thomas Anderson is reuniting with his Radiohead cohorts.
The Oscar-winning auteur helms Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s latest music video for band The Smile along with Tom Skinner. The Smile’s new track “Wall of Eyes” is from the eponymous album, set to be released January 26 by Xl Recordings.
Anderson directs the trippy black-and-white music video for “Wall of Eyes,” which centers on Yorke wandering through London. Yorke is shown alone in a pub, staring at a literal wall of eyeballs with a Lynchian twist, and later among dozens of versions of himself. The music video was filmed on location at The Mildmay Club and on the streets of London, England from October 24 to 26, 2023.
“Wall of Eyes” also features strings by The London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Brunt. The video is produced by Sara Murphy, Erica Frauman, and Shirley O’Connor, with Andy Jurgensen editing.

The latest Paul Thomas Anderson film is here! Well, not exactly a film, just another music video from the master filmmaker. PTA has directed the video for the song "Wall of Eyes" from the band The Smile. He's obviously involved with The Smile, as it's a new band made up of his friends - Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood along with drummer Tom Skinner. Their new album will be launching in January, and this music video is the first one made to help promote the release. They filmed it just a few weeks ago! The credits on Yt state this was shot on location in London at the The Mildmay Club (see Google Maps) in late October. This B&w "Wall of Eyes" music video features Yorke hanging out around this bar staring at the camera and singing. There are also a number of shots that are literally eyes (or an eye) on walls.

After playing Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton had a pretty public falling out with Marvel Studios over the final cut of the movie and was replaced by Mark Ruffalo for all subsequent appearances in the MCU.
The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier recently sat down with Josh Horowitz for Watchalong, a Happy Sad Confused spin-off in which Horowitz watches an entire movie alongside a filmmaker. During the watch, Leterrier shed a few more details on Edward Norton’s premature exit from the franchise, and he believes issues about the soundtrack may have played a part.

R.E.M.’s 11th studio album, Up, informally flagged the start of the third and final phase of the band’s career, following both their early I.R.S. years and their mainstream peak in the 1990s. Drummer Bill Berry departed the band after suffering a brain aneurysm while on tour in 1995, but the remaining members opted not to replace him, instead employing electronic drum programming throughout the majority of the album. And the timing, it seemed, was serendipitous, as the electronica movement was reaching its apotheosis.
Up subsequently marked the end of R.E.M.’s decade-long relationship with rock producer Scott Litt, replaced by Ray of Light knob-twirler Pat McCarthy and mixer Nigel Godrich, who produced Ok Computer. And yet, the album doesn’t immerse itself as vigorously in the genre as those two watershed releases. Sonically, tracks like the Eno-esque opener “Airportman” and the gently percolating “Suspicion...

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke had a lot to say about John Lennon‘s voice — and so did John himself. Yorke had a nuanced view of John’s “brutal” singing. John said his vocals helped him dominate The Beatles during their early years.
Radiohead’s Thom Yorke said he was a fan of John Lennon’s ‘weirdly brutal’ singing voice
A 2023 article from Rolling Stone features a passage from Jason Thomas Gordon’s forthcoming book The Singers Talk. In it, Yorke was asked to name the singer he’d most like to talk to about their voice. “It would be John Lennon,” he said. “Lennon’s whole attitude to singing, I’m a little bit obsessed with, because, on the surface, he has this whole, raw, doesn’t give a f*** … just the way he sings is weirdly brutal.

Radiohead wouldn’t be Radiohead without the eerie falsetto of Thom Yorke, but he didn’t become one of popular music’s most recognizable voices overnight. In an excerpt from Jason Thomas Gordon’s upcoming book The Singers Talk (via Rolling Stone), Yorke discussed how Neil Young and Jeff Buckley helped him hone in on his signature sound, the perks of bringing a chiropractor on tour, and the time he got so stoned he forgot his lyrics onstage.
Despite briefly taking vocal lessons in school, Yorke said he he used to think that his voice was “uncomfortably high or awkward.” Thankfully, that didn’t keep him from sending off a demo tape to a music magazine when he was 18, which earned him a pretty glowing review in response: “‘Who is this guy? He sounds just like Neil Young!’”

Lizzo, a documented fan of Radiohead and regular performer of unexpected covers, flexed her pipes by singing the band’s hit “Creep” during a recent night out at karaoke.
The “About Damn Time” singer shared a brief clip of her “Creep” rendition in a carousel post on Instagram Tuesday night, along with a caption that raised a rhetorical — albeit important — question: “What does Lizzo do after her shows?” Why, sing one of the biggest alt-radio hits of the ’90s, of course. (While donning baggy jeans and a t-shirt to suit the occasion.)
But Lizzo hasn’t always made her love for Radiohead so apparent. In a Vanity Fair cover story last fall, she explained she felt the need to keep her more rock-leaning music taste “hidden” from her friends at her predominantly Black school growing up.

The Beach Boys will tell their story in their own words in the first-ever official book from the surf-rock legends.
The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys compiles exclusive interviews from band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston — as well as archival text from late members Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson — to form the autobiography, which spans the beginnings of the band and signing their Capitol Records contract up through their famed 1980 Independence Day concert at the National Mall in Washington D.C.

This story about the editors of “Yellowjackets” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

The drama’s second season about a group of women grappling with the aftermath of a crash landing in the wilderness in their youth has pushed the envelope even further (cults! cannibalism!) and introduced more characters (including Elijah Wood’s wealthy amateur sleuth). But for two of the prominent editors on the show, Kevin D. Ross and Jeff Israel, it was just another day at the office, conveniently located in their own residences.
“We all work from home, so we have to keep contact in with each other constantly,” Israel said. “They’re writing the episodes...
