Herb Ross, one of the last directors of motion picture musicals, died in New York Tuesday at the age of 74. The cause of death was not disclosed. Ross is perhaps best known for directing the musical numbers in 1968's Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice. (The rest of the film was directed by William Wyler.) Ross continued to direct movie musicals even after the genre had already faded. They included The Turning Point in 1977, Nijinksi in 1980, Pennies from Heaven in 1981, and Footloose in 1984. Some of his other films include the comedies Play It Again Sam, The Sunshine Boys, The Goodbye Girl, Steel Magnolias, The Secret of My Succe$s, and the faux Sherlock Holmes mystery, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution. His last film was the 1995 romantic comedy Boys on the Side.
