Sky on Monday launched high-end TV series “Domina,” which examines Roman history through a female prism, toplining Kasia Smutniak as Livia Drusilla, the politically astute third wife of Emperor Augustus and mother of Emperor Tiberius, who managed to exert great power at a time of crisis for the Roman Empire.
The Comcast-owned paybox is airing “Domina” in Italy and the U.K. on May 14, followed by playdates on Sky in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on June 3.
The epic costume drama — conceived and written by Simon Burke and lead-directed by Claire McCarthy — is set to bow in the U.S. on Epix June 6.
Smutniak in the lead is supported by an A-list international cast comprising Liam Cunningham who plays Livius, Livia’s father, and Isabella Rossellini playing Balbina, an early enemy.
The “Domina” cast also comprises Matthew McNulty (“Misfits”) as the future emperor Gaius, Christine Bottomley (“The End of the F***ing World”) as Scribonia,...

It’s approaching newly a year and a half since the TV favourite Luther last hit the small screen, but word has just come through that BBC America have given the big thumbs up for the go ahead on Season 5, and yes Idris Elba fans – the big man himself will be returning.
Currently slated as a limited return with only four episodes scheduled, no other cast or air date has been revealed but shooting is set to start early in the new year for the BBC and BBC America. Show creator Neil Cross confirmed the award-winning series return with a statement,
“Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know.

"New job, first day, slightly nervous…"
Yesterday (January 6) marked the start of filming on Doctor Who's eighth series since its comeback in 2005, with fans getting their first on-set glimpse of new lead Peter Capaldi earlier today.
Capaldi's casting is, Who showrunner Steven Moffat tells us, "a big declaration of intent" for the long-running sci-fi series - a "statement of [its] importance" - but how much do we actually know about the new Doctor and his upcoming adventures?
Both Moffat and Capaldi's co-star Jenna Coleman agree that the 55-year-old actor will be "so different" to his 31-year-old predecessor Matt Smith, with the show's head writer promising an "old beast" with a "snarl".
"We've got used to two brilliant iterations of the younger, more puppy-dog Doctor and [David Tennant and Matt] have both been superlative," Moffat said in November. "But now it's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit!

Last year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special was easy to look forward to. It was Clara’s first episode as the new companion, and we already knew we liked her because she was Souffle Girl. Plus, hello, it was the Doctor Who Christmas Special, and we were once again getting it here on Christmas Day, just a few hours later than it was broadcast in the UK.
This year is a little harder. Of course we’re over the moon about it, because, again, it’s the Doctor Who Christmas Special, and of course we’re again getting it just a few hours after the UK. But it’s Matt Smith‘s final episode as the Doctor. For many fans, he is their Doctor. These farewell episodes are never easy, regardless. It's almost time. Matt Smith will bid farewell to Doctor Who on Christmas Day and while we're more than a little excited to see Peter Capaldi's "old beast" snarl, it's pretty heartbreaking to see Matt go - he's not only the show's star but also its greatest champion.
Smith, showrunner Steven Moffat and companion actress Jenna Coleman attended several panels last month as part of the official Doctor Who Celebration at London's ExCel - each packed to the rafters with fans - and the Week in Geek attended the final gathering on Sunday, November 24.
In closing the panel, Moffat paid a lengthy and heartfelt tribute to his leading man and friend, which is reproduced in full below:

Almost unbelievably, we are down to three days left before the worldwide simulcast of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special episode, Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor. Come on, Saturday! Of course I am not in the least minding that BBC America has pre-empted countless episodes of Kitchen Nightmares and Top Gear in favor of All Who, All the Time all this week. What a treat!

Earlier this year, BBC shelved plans to produce additional 3D programming, but this didn’t affect the broadcaster’s risky decision to create and broadcast the upcoming 50th anniversary episode of its long-running sci-fi hit Doctor Who in the format. “I hope that in watching this the TV drama industry will go away and evaluate how best to proceed with 3D,” series producer Marcus Wilson said. “I was one of 3D's skeptics, now I am a convert. … Stereo adds another layer of richness to the show.” Although science fiction seems a natural genre for 3D, the BBC

The Day of The Doctor is fast approaching and with November 23 marking 50 years of Doctor Who, much speculation abounds as to what will happen on that magical day and how it will affect Doctor Who for the next 50 years. Series Producer Marcus Wilson has described it as “a love letter to the fans,” but meeting fans expectations for such a momentous occasion are a tall order. The return of fan favorites David Tennant and Billie Piper as well as confirmed appearances by the Zygons (unseen on TV since 1975) and the Daleks are however, big steps in the right direction.
Steven Moffat is quoted as saying, “I’ve been lying my ass off for months!” and “Most things that have been said about the 50th are not true…Normally, I am responsible for the disinformation and rubbish rumors – I usually put them out myself, but I haven’t needed to for this one.

Producer Marcus Wilson - who is also departing - confirmed that filming wrapped on the festive special earlier today (October 5).
He tweeted: "So it's goodnight from me, and it's goodnight from him. That's a wrap. Christmas 2013. Thank you all."
Twelfth Doctor actor Peter Capaldi reportedly visited the set of the special on Thursday (October 3) to film his first scenes in the role.
Smith will appear in two more episodes before departing the long-running BBC series. He will next appear alongside David Tennant and John Hurt in the 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor'.

Couldn’t get into Hall H for Doctor Who‘s packed-house 50th Anniversary panel at Comic-Con 2013? It was the third panel of the day, following Supernatural and Breaking Bad, and though some people left after those panels, most of the people in the Hall arrived at 4:30am (when I did) or before to see this 1:30 pm panel, since I was one of the last people to get in before the day got started.
No worries, though, because BBC America has released a panel highlights featurette, and it’s a good one. Sorry, they’ve not made the 50th Anniversary Special trailer available – much to the dismay of Whovians in the UK, who are reportedly peeved that a Doctor Who trailer has been shown exclusively in the Us.
Not many people in the Us have seen it either. Steven Moffat introduced the exclusive-to-Comic-Con trailer with the warning that, should...

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TCA coverage. Fresh from a raucous, standing-room-only appearance at Comic-Con, the producers and stars of the BBC America series Doctor Who hit Beverly Hills and TCA this morning to promote the forthcoming mega-hyped 50th anniversary special coming November 23. There is a bittersweet edge to the marketing, however, since Matt Smith — the latest in a long line of actors to portray Doctor Who — is leaving the series after four years later this year. He’s currently shooting his final episode now. Why leave? “Well, I’ve done it four years,” Smith said, “and we shoot nine or 10 months a year.” In other words, it’s a lot of work. But its more than that, he insisted. “It’s just a good time for me and for the show,” he added. “It wasn’t an easy choice to make…I feel very proud to have been...

Following up on a raucous Comic-Con panel, "Doctor Who" landed at TCA's summer press tour for a far more subdued session with journalists to promote the show's upcoming 50th Anniversary special.
Instead of catering to fans who already love the show, stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman and producer Marcus Wilson made a pitch to welcome newcomers. "The great thing about 'Doctor Who' is you can sort of jump in at any episode at any time," Smith says. "I think probably [the anniversary special] will make a bit more noise because it's the 50th. It's a small audience [in the U.S.], but worldwide it's like 77 million. It has a footprint and I think it will get bigger, definitely."
"When we were conceiving the 50th we wanted to make it a jumping on point for new fans," Wilson adds. "It's a show about hope, about adventure, about excitement. It's very accessible, it's very heroic, you'll...

It wasn't the warm and devoted audience they'd met at Comic-Con, but "Doctor Who" stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman (joined with producer Marcus Wilson) still happily fielded questions about the show at press tour. As expected, many questions were about Smith's looming exit from the show, some were about his current buzz cut, and there was also talk about an aubergine tweed jacket and "Home Alone." Smith talked about what's ahead -- Doctor Who's regeneration and his exit from the show. "It is going to be emotional and it's been a transformative experience and you… become very attached to people....

BBC America's "Doctor Who" panel at the Television Critics Association Summer press tour 2013 was yet another bittersweet send-off for Matt Smith with plenty of talk about him saying goodbye to the show and the search to replace him.
"It is going to be emotional," Smith said of giving up his gig as the Doctor. "I've done it for four years, and we shoot 9 to 10 months a year. I think the show has come to sort of a natural tipping point -- we're at the top of a cycle. But it was a hard choice ... It's transformed my career. It is my career, to a certain extent."
"I'm also slightly in denial about the fact that Matt is leaving," said co-star Jenna Coleman, who plays the Doctor's current companion, Clara.
But he can only be mourned for so long -- they still need to find his replacement. On the topic of finding a new Doctor,...

More than perhaps any scripted drama on TV, the nature of Doctor Who is forward-looking renewal, embracing the sort of periodic cast upheaval that other shows strive to avoid at all cost. For actor Matt Smith, who is preparing to shoot his final episode as the Time Lord, stepping off the cult hit is an unnerving prospect.
“I feel very proud to be a part of such a wonderful legacy,” Smith said Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. “The thing about Doctor Who is he always looks forward. The show will get bigger and better...

After Whovians were done mourning the departure of Doctor Who's Matt Smith from the iconic BBC series (some fans took minutes, some are still weeping), the next question on everyone's mind was: who will be the next Time Lord? According to producer Marcus Wilson, they have no idea…yet. "It's an open book at the moment," Wilson said during the Doctor Who panel at the Television Critics Association press tour. "At the moment we're concentrating on Matt's send-off." As for fans asking for a female Doctor or suggesting up their own dream actors for the role, Wilson insists that anything, and anyone, is possible. "The search is ongoing. You just want the best...

BBC America is top of the morning at the Beverly Hilton for summer press tour with the TV critcs, and we are here with Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and producer Marcus Wilson as they discuss the end of Matt's run as a Doctor. Previously Smith waxed nostalgic on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson' about his iconic role of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" - a role he took over in 2010. He announced his decision in June to leave the show and perhaps take the Doctor Who screwdriver as a souvenir. BBC America has been having a good year, coming off its highest-rated quarter ever and having a legit, surprise hit on its hands with the rollicking sci-fi drama "Orphan Black." The network rolled into the TCA summer press tour with its major franchise "Doctor Who" prepping for a major change as Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith departs the series and it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special. Is a new Doctor set yet? According to producer Marcus Wilson, who appeared with Smith and Jenna Coleman (who plays Clara Oswald), "the search is ongoing -- you just want the best actor possible for the role. You just cast the net wide and hope you find somebody brilliant." Timing is "all being worked out at the moment. We're concentrating on Matt's send-off." The Daleks will make an appearance in the 50th anniversary special – but what did we learn from the cast and crew?
Representatives of the UK's biggest geek export, Doctor Who, were out in force at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. It had its own panel session, featuring Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman, Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and producer Marcus Wilson, and they showed a trailer for the long-awaited 50th celebrations (though it isn't online yet). As is often the way, they said a lot, but revealed very little. Here's what we now know.
• At the panel discussion, Moffat admitted that that the special will resolve a lot of long-running storylines.
• Let the fangasms begin! In what is surely just one of many riffs on the show's history, the 50th references the first multi-Doctor special, the 10th anniversary episode The Three Doctors. Ten tells Eleven on entering his Tardis: "Oh you've redecorated.

Doctor Who producer Marcus Wilson has hinted at how the mystery of Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) will unfold.
On the BBC sci-fi drama, a woman resembling "impossible girl" Clara has died at two points in history, sparking the Doctor's (Matt Smith) curiosity.
"What's lovely this year is that we've... got a thread running through these eight very different, very exciting stories - the mystery of Clara," Wilson told TV & Satellite Week.
"She's the impossible girl. The Doctor has met her twice before and both times she died. This time he's determined to keep her alive and to discover who or what she really is."
Wilson claimed that the "riddle" of Clara - devised by Who showrunner Steven Moffat - "won't easily be cracked".
"I defy anybody to guess it," he said. "Steven Moffat has found a way to lead everybody down the garden path and then knock them over with surprise at the end.
