Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

Hope Runs High has acquired U.S. rights to Augusto Sandino’s sophomore feature “A Vanishing Fog,” which won the SXSW Zeiss cinematography prize. The film is slated for an early 2024 opening in U.S. theaters. It’s the first feature to be shot in Colombia’s Sumapaz Páramo, the largest ecosystem of its kind in the world.
“In the middle of the staggering and endangered Sumapaz Paramo ecosystem; F, a solitary explorer, strives to protect the mystical and fragile land he inhabits, while caring for his ailing father,” the synopsis reads.
“Augusto Sandino’s incredible blend of playful surrealism and the overwhelming individuality of the environment in which the film is set has stayed with me since my first viewing. I believe his ability to balance visual scale, cinematic playfulness, and true heart make him an artist we should be engaging with frequently,” said Hope Runs High curator Taylor Purdee.

Over the past year I reviewed a lot of indie horror films, some of them really good, some of them just Ok, and some of them really, really bad. The following isn't exactly a best of the year list, because I haven't watched every single film that was released, played at a film festival, or completed filming this year. Rather, these are the best movies that I reviewed for MoreHorror.com in 2015, and are all movies that I can recommend without hesitation.
Mania is directed by Jessica Cameron and stars Ellie Church. Olalla is written and directed by Amy Hesketh and stars Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila, Mila Joya, and Erix Antoine. When you're a film critic, your inbox and Facebook messenger can get clogged with so many requests to review films that it can be overwhelming. I get maybe five or six requests to review movies a day, coming from everybody from professional publicists, to teenage filmmakers making movies in their parent's backyards, and everybody in between. And the thing is, you have to say no to most of these movies, because you know that most of them are going to suck and you'd drive yourself crazy watching them, and also because you simply don't have the time.
Still, when director John Stewart Wildman sent me an unsolicited email to review his film (how these people find my...

If I had to place a wager on who will "out-Mars" Austin talent Jonny Mars with the number of film projects that one Texan can possibly be associated with in one year, my bet for the top contender is Dallas-based Farah White. At this year's Dallas International Film Festival, White was involved in five films as either a member of the cast and producer.
Hell hath no fury like a Texas woman scorned in Rachel Shepard's About Mom and Dad, a comedic drama of a couple whose decades-long marriage disintegrates. White leads the ensemble Texas cast as Teri, effortlessly delivering many of the film's witty lines including, "There are no sides -- you just need to know that I am right." Dallas-based Brent Anderson stars as dad Eddie, and Austinites Heather Kafka and Jonny Mars also appear in supporting roles in the movie.
White is also executive producer for About Mom and Dad,...

Whoever designed the new poster for the upcoming film The Ladies of the House should be given the job of designing every movie poster... ever. We've got it right here for you to soak in as well as info on upcoming screenings.
The Ladies of the House will be making its world premiere at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 4-5 and then screen immediately afterward at the Sarasota Film Festival on April 7-8.
The film was directed by John Stuart Wildman, who co-wrote the picture with Justina Walford. It stars Farah White (Ex-Terminators, Daylight's End), Melodie Sisk (White Reindeer, Summer of Blood), Brina Palencia ("The Walking Dead," "Star-Crossed"), adult film star Michelle "Belladonna" Sinclair, Samrat Chakrabarti (The Waiting City, "Damages"), Gabriel Horn ("Ghostbreakers", Carried Away) and Rj Hanson.
And in spite of the bit of playfulness in the opening paragraph, we do actually know who created the lovely poster below.

Programming a short film before a feature can be a hit or miss at times, and I enjoy selections that complement one another. A solid well-crafted short can warm up an audience and set the tone for the feature presentation ... as demonstrated at the Dallas International Film Festival this week with a pair of Austin films.
The short film S/ash by Austin filmmaker Clay Liford -- pictured above with executive producer Farah White and Ashland Viscosi -- is the best foreplay that I could imagine to experience before The Bounceback, the latest movie from writer/director Bryan Poyser and co-writers Steven Walters and David DeGrow Shotwell. Neither film is for the prudish, but if you enjoy titillating humor and some impropriety then you're in for a special treat.

When local producer Kelly Williams asked me about sending Slackerwood some links to video episodes the Hellion crew would shoot for the Austin film's Sundance premiere, I thought this would be a wonderful way to share tips for filmmakers about the smartest, savviest ways to bring your movie to a film festival. I thought we'd get a glimpse of the real fest experience from the filmmakers' perspective.
And it turns out that yes, we are getting a glimpse of the fest experience from the filmmakers' perspective, and it is unbelievably goofy. In a good way. Here are the second and third episodes in the "Hellion Sundance Chronicles," and while one of them might be a What Not To Do lesson, they're definitely fun to watch. And short, which is what I like best in online videos.

Porn actress Michelle Sinclair (pictured above) is to make her mainstream movie debut in horror flick Stripped. Who’s she? You may ask.
