Snow is beginning to fall, and lights have gone up all over the place to celebrate the holiday season. Families are watching their favorite old movies like 1954's "White Christmas" to get in the mood. Unfortunately, if you want the full, official soundtrack to that particular film, you are out of luck. Even Santa can't fix record contract issues. He really should leave coal in a few record executives' stockings.
If you've never seen Michal Curtiz's "White Christmas," it's the story of Bob (Bing Crosby) and Phil (Danny Kaye), old WWII war buddies who have gone into show business and had great success. They meet sisters Judy (Vera-Ellen) and Betty (Rosemary Clooney), a performing duo dealing with some hard times. They all end up in Vermont at a failing resort owned by the guys' disgraced Major General (Dean Jagger), putting on a show to save the place and restore some holiday cheer.

Uzo Aduba calls HBO’s In Treatment “huge” for her – a first lead performance and one she hopes will widen the path for diverse actors in highly complex roles. Aduba stars as psychotherapist Dr. Brooke Taylor, who leads four wounded patients towards self-realization and a degree of peace even as she battles her own demons in a densely worded series where she presides over every scene.
It was “great to sit in a seat with that level of complexity going on in [Brooke’s] life, while also being excellent in her job. But it’s not a seat that I have seen often occupied by someone like myself. So that was exciting, and I hope it encourages people to see that there is space for you in this conversation,” Aduba, nominated for a Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy, said during a panel conversation at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees awards-season event.

HBO’s In Treatment has seen Uzo Aduba’s Dr. Brooke Taylor help her patients process their own emotions and traumas, but in Season 4’s “Brooke Week 5,” the doctor helps herself.

If Peak TV has taught us anything, it’s impossible to have too much of a good thing. That’s why “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” still airs five nights a week in primetime and all of NBC’s Thursday night sitcoms are super-sized. Ok, so neither of those things are true, but that hasn’t stopped the TV industry from looking into other ways of sating a fanbase’s every desire.
That, of course, is part of the reason why studios continue to be obsessed with creating and recreating shows based on existing intellectual property. If you liked “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” surely you’ll enjoy that same show, but different.

Therapy can be exhausting. Having any kind of emotional conversation can be exhausting. These days, being so out of practice, any conversation at all can be exhausting — even when you’re just listening.
The original seasons of HBO’s “In Treatment” turn talk therapy into profound theater. Dr. Paul Weston (played by Gabriel Byrne) meets with patients, and the audience at home gets to watch each session. The show’s brilliant design allows viewers to do what Paul can’t: pick and choose which patients to follow — including Paul himself, who holds weekly sessions with a therapist of his own. It can feel like you’re working alongside the doctor, until the end of the week, when you have see him in a new light. HBO originally aired episodes every weeknight, with each day of the week devoted to the same patient, before shifting to block releases on Sundays and Mondays.

“What happens when you lose track of your pain,” Uzo Aduba asks. When you shove your most painful feelings down and suppress them? How will that come back to bite you? And who will you be?
This is the idea that hooked her into her latest role as Dr. Brooke Taylor—a therapist in the grip of bereavement, with her own hidden pain—in HBO’s new incarnation of the hit show In Treatment. The original 2008-2010 series, created by Rodrigo García, had Gabriel Byrne in the chair as Dr. Paul Weston, and gathered multiple awards and massive critical acclaim. Now, after a decade-long hiatus, executive producers Joshua Allen (Empire) and Jennifer Schuur have brought it back with Aduba in the driving seat.

“Therapy doesn’t have a target audience,” psychologist Brooke Taylor insists. “Everyone can benefit.”
The good doctor is right about the wide-ranging value of mental health. Scripted dramas about therapy, however, tend to have a very specific, niche audience — particularly when they are dramas like In Treatment, which are about therapy and nothing else.
The original run of In Treatment, based on the Israeli drama Be’tipul, lasted for three seasons on HBO, from 2008 to 2010. The focus then was on Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, a brilliant, devoted therapist...

It’s been more than a year since we last saw Uzo Aduba on television, but the next week is poised to fix that in a big way. On Friday, Aduba appears among the all-star cast of Amazon’s new sci-fi anthology series Solos, doing what’s essentially an episode-length monologue (with some interruption by her home assistant, voiced by Zachary Quinto) as Sasha, a woman who has been quarantining much longer than any of us have. On Sunday, she headlines the revival season of In Treatment, the HBO drama...

When HBO announced last year they were reviving In Treatment, I thought, “Of course.” After all, the drama is perfect for the pandemic era, since it’s a simple set-up of psychologist and patient, just talking in a room — a string of interconnected two-handers, pared down to the barest of dramatic bones. The new revival (debuting Sunday, May 23 at 9/8c) does find plenty of emotional fireworks within that limited format… but it’s a decidedly mixed bag. The series rotates its episodes among four storylines, and some end up being more compelling than others.

Therapy is back in session thanks to the return of the HBO original series “In Treatment.” The show is returning for a fourth season 10 years after the third season concluded. Uzo Aduba takes over for Gabriel Byrne, who played Dr. Paul Weston for three years, as Dr. Brooke Taylor, the observant, empathetic therapist at the center of the series, which begins its HBO run on May 23. Watch the trailer below.
Jennifer Schuur (formerly a producer on “Hannibal”) and Joshua Allen (a story editor on “Empire”) serve as co-showrunners on the series, working from the formula developed by producer Rodrigo Garcia. Each episode focuses on a particular patient and his or her sessions with Dr. Taylor. This time around, Anthony Ramos (“In the Heights”), Liza Colón-Zayas (“Keane”), John Benjamin Hickey (Broadway’s “The Inheritance”), and Quintessa Swindell (“Voyagers”) join the series, with Joel Kinnaman of “Altered Carbon” and “The Killing” playing Brooke’s on-and-off longtime boyfriend.

The new season of “In Treatment” premiering on HBO this May comes more than a decade after the show was last on the air and boasts an entirely new star and creative team. Regardless, the show is being billed as a fourth season, rather than a complete reboot of what came before.
“We are not trying leave our predecessor in the dust,” executive producer Jennifer Schuur said during a Television Critics Association panel for the show on Wednesday. “We are grateful to them; we admire that show in myriad ways. We feel like there was no way to go forward starting over from scratch. We needed to have this be Season 4.”
“In Treatment” first debuted on HBO in 2008. The series ran for three seasons with Gabriel Byrne starring as Dr. Paul Weston, the therapist at the center of the show. The new season stars “Orange Is the New Black” alum Uzo Aduba as Dr.

Uzo Aduba Says ‘In Treatment’ Is “One Of The Hardest Jobs I’ve Ever Had & I’m Grateful For It” – TCA
Uzo Aduba, star of the upcoming season of In Treatment, and exec producers Jennifer Schuur and Josh Allen, got on the couch to discuss the return of the therapy drama after ten years.
The trio, speaking at HBO’s virtual press tour, discussed why it was being pitched as season four, the diversity of the cast and why it moved from New York to Los Angeles.
The Orange Is The New Black star also revealed the challenges of playing therapist Dr. Brooke Taylor.

You know the usual players when it comes to conversations about HBO’s murderers row of prestige dramas. There’s the holy triumvirate in “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” and “Deadwood” surrounded by their slightly less prestigious contemporaries in “Six Feet Under,” “Big Love,” and “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as more recent editions of the canon, including “The Leftovers,” “The Deuce,” and “Succession.”
But often overlooked when discussing HBO’s great drama series is “In Treatment,” a show centered around a single therapist, Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) and a rotating slate of patients. It was a small show, an unconventional half-hour drama that aired five episodes a week, the better to mimic a therapist’s schedule. But within those half-hour episodes, each representing a single therapy session, “In Treatment” packed a hell of a punch and in its first three seasons earned a Peabody Award, seven Emmy nominations, and two Emmy wins.

HBO has made an appointment for more In Treatment. The network on Tuesday officially ordered a fourth season of the Emmy-winning drama, which ended three-season run in 2010. HBO’s In Treatment is officially back in session and, along with TBS’ Daniel Radcliffe fronted Miracle Workers, coming to California thanks to some generous tax credits from the state.
There are no definite details on whether Gabriel Byrne will be returning as psychotherapist Paul Weston in the premium cabler drama that first ran from 2008 to 2010. However, after rumblings of possibly more of the Rodrigo García shepherded series started last month, we do know that there will be a Season 4 of In Treatment and it will receive just over $6 million in tax incentives from the Golden State.
“We are very grateful for the relocation incentive and the opportunity to base more production in California,” said HBO’s Janet Graham Borba today of the move of the once NYC-based In Treatment out West in its latest incarnation. “The state’s ongoing efforts to promote film and TV production have a very significant impact,...

HBO is exploring the return of therapist drama In Treatment.
The WarnerMedia-backed cable network is considering a reboot of the series, which ran for three seasons and over 100 episodes, ending in 2010.
The move, first broken by Deadline sister publication TV Line, could see In Treatment filmed under Covid-19 production protocols, given that it is relatively pandemic-proof, featuring two characters talking at a socially distanced degree.
The series is based on an Israeli format, Be Tipul, created by The Affair’s Hagai Levi. The U.S. version, which was produced and developed by Rodrigo Garcia, starred Gabriel Byrne as psychotherapist Paul Weston, speaking to his clients as well as his own therapist.
Other actors featured included Dianne Wiest, who played psychotherapist Gina Toll, as well as patients played by Dane DeHaan, Blair Underwood, Melissa George, Mia Wasikowska, Michelle Forbes, Alison Pill, Irrfan Khan, Debra Winger and Amy Ryan.

Don’t do it Vittorio! The Italian master’s last neorealist project was done ‘in collaboration’ with American producer David O. Selznick, who proceeded to crowbar his way into every directorial decision. The resulting ‘creative differences’ spoiled Signor De Sica’s Italian version, but that wasn’t enough. Selznick put it through a sausage machine for the American release, which is almost half an hour shorter. Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift are excellent in both versions, but De Sica’s is far superior — and studying the differences tells why the first demand of powerful directors is to retain final cut. The presentation offers both full films, plus the short subject Selznick added to bring his version up to minimal feature length.

In my early days on the beat, NBC had an ad campaign encouraging people to watch summer reruns, promising, "If you haven't seen it, it's new to you!" In the age of Peak TV, that slogan seems less cynical than accurate. The rise of streaming services has put the bulk of TV history only a click or two away, which means that people are constantly discovering The Wire, or Arrested Development, or Terriers (sigh) for the very first time. In lieu of a summer rewind this year, I wanted to offer up primers of shows you can stream, whether an older series available in full(*) or something current you can catch up on before its next season begins. So far, I've done a few current shows in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Halt and Catch Fire, and Rectify, plus completed shows in United States of Tara and Flight of the Conchords. (*) Note: with these picks,...

Last week we looked back at the 1990 1989 Oscar ceremony (it took place in 1990 but celebrated the best of 1989) and got to see an unfazed Jessica Lange and a blustered Charlton Heston, both things which are equally entertaining to watch. This week, we’re tempering our nerves over Haynes’s Oscar snub with a visit to In Treatment’s Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne).
Developed by Rodrigo García (who we talked about briefly since he directed Six Feet Under’s “A Private Life”), this HBO show is an American adaptation of the Israeli series BeTipul. Aired as a five-night series, every episode follows a session with Dr. Weston. For today we’re looking at season three’s “Week 1: Jesse” where we meet Dane DeHaan’s character Jesse. And boy is he a testy one!

If your show runs an hour - or approximately 45 minutes with ad breaks - it's a drama. If it runs approximately half of that, you're looking at a sitcom.
Right? Those are 'the rules' – aren't they?
Perhaps not. Particularly in the last few years, television on both sides of the Atlantic has begun experimenting with format more readily than ever – so why does the half-hour drama remain an uncelebrated form?
It's a proposition I put to actor Frankie J Alvarez – one of the stars of HBO series Looking – in December. There's no hard and fast rule that means a single episode of drama can't last a half hour, is there?
"You're completely right – there is no rule," Alvarez agrees. "Although the powers-that-be have a hard time changing... and so it feels like it is a rule."
Alvarez has plenty to say on this topic, given that Looking – though originally developed...

There was never a lot of buzz about this under-the-radar drama, but there should have been because it’s excellent television. It’s a unique show, seeing as the majority of every episode takes place in one room, where two people sitting in chairs have a conversation. That may not sound very entertaining, but if you’re a lover of good acting and great dialogue, you’re in for a treat with In Treatment.
Based on an Israeli TV series, In Treatment tells the story of psychiatrist Dr. Paul Weston and his patients. Each of the half-hour episodes is devoted to a single therapy session with one of three regular patients we get to know over the course of the third season. Each episode is designated with a specific day of the week, and the episodes rotate in that order. The Friday session is when Paul goes to see his own analyst.

The HBO series "In Treatment" beckons the viewer to peer into the keyhole of the office of New York psychologist Dr. Paul Weston, played with utter conviction by Gabriel Byrne. Among a brilliant cast, Alison Pill, one of the youngest actors on the show, distinguished herself with a performance of depth and complexity. For any actor, especially one so young, to be able to peel back the mask of persona and denial and expose the raw emotion of a young woman of 23 grappling with boyfriends, identity, and self-sufficiency while denying the severity of a cancer diagnosis is astonishing. She never tries to win the viewer over with her congeniality. We are drawn to watch her honest portrayal because we have seldom seen a performance so lacking in artifice, so full of emotional truth. We don't always agree with April's decision to hide her illness from her family or to reject.

After days of blanket coverage of the royal wedding, we all must be in need of a little therapy, so the return of In Treatment for a second series was especially welcome. Much has changed since we last saw therapist Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne). He's moved from Baltimore to Brooklyn, he's got divorced, and he also appears to have forgotten he went to the University of Pennsylvania, as he now claims to have attended Columbia University. It's probably a Freudian slip.
But some things remain very much the same. Weston is still a dream TV shrink; good-looking, there for you and with a voice and eyes you could happily fall into. A shrink with whom female patients will have very little trouble accessing their transference issues. The only drawback is that he is also a shrink who seems to have little trouble in accessing his own transference issues with his female patients.

Actor Gabriel Byrne's subtle portrayal of a psychotherapist in TV series In Treatment has won him awards and made him a heartthrob again at 59
An interesting irony of Gabriel Byrne's career is that despite having acted for 30 years and been one half of a celebrity couple for a decade when he was married to actor Ellen Barkin, he has managed, to his relief, to maintain an impressive privacy – yet the parts he chooses are, despite himself, highly personal, and even self-revelatory. What public perception there is of him seems to extend little beyond "Irish", "handsome" and – to use his least favourite yet the most popular description of him – "brooding". ("I don't even know what that means!" he complains, with – unfortunately for him – an expression close to brooding.)

Despite winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe, "In Treatment" could not save itself from the chopping block. HBO has just cut the drama show from its programming due to declining rating. The first season was watched by more than 446,000 viewers but by season 3 finale, the number went down to 279,000 viewers.
However, HBO is not giving up on the show completely. "It's true that we have no plans to continue with 'In Treatment' as previously formatted," an HBO spokesperson said. Based on an Israeli series, "In Treatment" follows psychoanalyst Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) through his week, capturing a session each night with his patients before concluding each Friday in the office of Paul's own therapist, Gina. Among Paul's patients were characters played by Amy Ryan, Debra Winger and Blair Underwood.

It looks like the doctor is out -- for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after the seasons on the air but may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn't perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven't kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series.

That didn't perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven't kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.

Despite its status as a critical darling, In Treatment has been cancelled by HBO. Well, sort of.
The show, which simply didn't get the ratings to sustain itself on the pay-cable network, might have been harmed by the giant commitment it required from viewers: season three saw the airing of three or four episodes a week (each episode centered upon a different patient). While conceptually that sounds great, getting audiences to tune in for one night a week is difficult -- exponentially more so for multiple nights a week.
That's why HBO announced that it was discontinuing the show, though the network's spokesperson did make quite an interesting distinction about the show's end.
"It's true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted," was the official statement. "However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.
