It feels like suddenly Nicholas Galitzine is everywhere.
The 29-year-old English actor had a runaway streaming hit last year with “Red, White & Royal Blue,” starring as a prince caught up in a closeted gay romance with an American politico (Taylor Zakhar Perez). He played a dopey quarterback in the “Heathers”-inspired high school comedy “Bottoms,” and this spring starred as a queer George Villiers, aka the First Duke of Buckingham.
Now, he’s a full-blown romantic drama lead in “The Idea of You,” starring as Hayes Campbell, the frontman of a One Direction-inspired pop group who falls for a divorced single mother, Solène, played by Anne Hathaway. Directed by Michael Showalter and written by Jennifer Westfeldt, the film situates us in the moony dazedness of new love that becomes Solène’s fixation. Some have dubbed it “the Harry Styles fan-fiction movie”, while others are already calling it the new Notting Hill.
The Idea of You, the latest film from The Big Sick director Michael Showalter centres around a passionate, if a little vanilla, age-gap relationship between a forty year old divorcee from LA and an internationally renowned boy-band singer in his early twenties.
Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine are Solène and Haze, two star-crossed lovers who after a meet-cute at the Coachella music festival – she is there to chaperone her teenage daughter and her friends, while he is headlining the main stage – can’t seem to get enough of each other. But while Solene repeatedly rejects Haze’s advances invoking their 15 year age-gap, Haze is convinced that she is the woman for him and refuses to take no for an answer.
Much soul-searching ensues as the couple finally gets together secretly, only...

In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

The Idea of You should never work as well as it should, but the rom-com does. A whimsical tale full of heart, Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine is an addictive, often hilarious, and meaningful addition to the genre that has made a comeback of late. This is an old-fashioned effort that swoons the audience’s expectations to its heart’s contents.
That’s mostly because it rides the back of its leads, whose chemistry should come with a warning because they burn up the screen. Despite the 12-year age gap between them (and it helps Hathaway has the same ageless disease Paul Rudd finds himself afflicted with), you never question the differences because the script is upfront and honest by never letting us forget them.
The Idea of You gets ahead of the elephant in the room early, and often, that slowly fades away.

Plot: Solène Marchand is a 40-year-old single mom who, at her ex-husband’s request, takes their teenage daughter to Coachella. In a surprising turn of events, Solène strikes up a budding romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon, a famous boy band

Cathy Schulman says getting into the movie business was a “bit of an accident.” It was a time before studying cinema was recognized as a fine art, so she was a playwrighting major at Yale. Then someone told her she would average about $1,500 for her plays. Concerned if she could support herself, she was advised to look into the movie business. “I said, ‘What’s that?’” Schulman, now the CEO and president of Welle Entertainment, recalls. “And the next thing you knew, I was in an interview, and I was hired to work on a set, and the rest is history.”
The movie was “Blue Steel,” and the-then 22-year-old Schulman was excited to see the film was being directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. (She didn’t know it would be another 20 years before she worked with a female director.) From those humble beginnings, Schulman would go on to enormous...

For the perpetually impecunious (see: poor) indie filmmaker, a well-executed short or feature project can often be your best passport to the larger world. Left to our own scant devices, our calendars are unlikely to fill up with myriad jaunts to such exotic locales as Cannes, Venice, Locarno or, erm, Arkansas. But with a piping hot Dcp in hand, you not have not just an excuse to visit such places but an invitation. And few American cities are quite as dreamily summoned in the mind as day-glow Miami. After all: if it’s good enough for LeBron James, it’s good enough for us.

Despite rumors that The Idea of You is a work of Harry Styles fan fiction (or a reimagining of Notting Hill), Michael Showalter’s frothy romantic comedy stands on its own with a lot of good old-fashioned star power. A date movie that feels crafted in an era before streaming (yet comes to Prime Video) the film follows Solène (Anne Hathaway), a Silver Lake art gallery owner who’s recently broken up with Daniel (Reid Scott), a corporate attorney with a wandering eye. They share custody of their 16-year-old daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin) who has transitioned from boy bands like the fictional August Moon in favor of powerful female pop stars like St. Vincent.
After Daniel bails on an all-expenses-paid VIP trip to Coachella, Solène reluctantly steps in and takes Izzy and friends to the valley for the weekend. There, in a meet-cute involving a VIP bathroom mix-up that finds...

“You’re not even a person till you’re 30,” says a friend to Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway), a single woman celebrating her 40th birthday. “Then you spend the next 10 years figuring out what kind of person you want to be.” In The Idea of You, adapted from the Robinne Lee romance novel that was ostensibly based on fan fiction about erstwhile One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles, age is only a problem insomuch as other people make it one, rooting its romantic complications in the somehow still revolutionary idea that people (and women specifically) grow and bloom throughout every phase of life.
Solène is a Los Angeles art gallery owner still nursing wounds from her not-so-recent divorce while doing her best to amicably co-parent her teenage daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin), with her ex-husband, Daniel (Reid Scott), whose cheating ways led to their separation. Robinne Lee’s 2017 debut novel “The Idea of You” followed an almost 40-year-old woman who enters a romance with the star of a giant boyband sensation. The book was a giant hit, in no small part due to fans viewing one of the main characters as a stand-in for One Direction’s Harry Styles. Now comes a movie adaptation from the director of “The Big Sick,” which translates the novel while making enough changes to improve upon the source material, including a fantastic ending that puts a perfect bow on the story.

Rom-coms are a staple of cinema and have been for decades. Right alongside action movies and horror flicks, these tales of romance infused with humor are often there to help anchor any given year at the movies. Yet, they are often viewed as nothing more than popcorn movies; the cinematic equivalent of empty calories. Director Michael Showalter's "The Idea of You" is here to remind us that these movies can be so much more than that. At their best, they can be illuminating experiences that shed meaningful light on the human condition. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by Anne Hathaway and a star-making turn for Nicholas Galitzine, this is the genre at its best.

In Michael Showalter’s The Idea of You, based on the novel by Robinne Lee, Amazon MGM Studios brings to the screen a narrative that tantalizes with the prospect of exploring the complexities of love, age disparity and the pursuit of happiness in the digital age. Anchored by Anne Hathaway’s Solene, a single mother and art gallery owner, and Nicholas Galitzine’s Hayes Campbell, a young pop star from the fictional band August Moon, the film sets its sights on charting the course of an unconventional romance, but the script muddles it all up to produce a somewhat funny, somewhat entertaining, albeit overly long romantic comedy.

When you’re 10, it sounds like every line your favorite boy band sings is being aimed directly at you. Somewhere along the way, the illusion shatters. Teenagers are smarter than we give them credit for, and they eventually figure out how parasocial relationships operate: Basically, the fans do all the work, saving up for concert tickets and glitter-painting their idols’ names on their notebooks, while the lab-tested singers soak up all the love … and the allowance money. But what if, instead of the feelings flowing in one direction, a pop star fell hard for one of his followers? Or her mom?

The Idea of You, the new romantic comedy from Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), begins like many of the best in its genre: a meet-cute so silly it endears.
This one happens in a trailer that Solene (a delightful Anne Hathaway) confuses for a restroom during Coachella. The almost-40-year-old divorcée wasn’t supposed to be in the desert surrounded by neon-clad adolescents shrieking at the top of their lungs. If Solene had it her way, she would be on a solo camping trip somewhere in the woods with only her thoughts. But her ex-husband Daniel (Reid Scott) bailed on his plan to take their 16-year-old daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin) and her friends to see an old favorite band August Moon, an international group modeled after One Direction. Now, Solene is stuck navigating a sea of youthful energy and looking for a place to pee.
With bladder relief comes company.

While its age gap is nowhere near that of tabloidy awards contender May December, The Idea Of You still features romantic partners who are apart in years. The (admittedly very loose) inspiration here is Harry Styles' dating life and pop megastardom as Anne Hathaway's 40-something single mother stars dating 24-year-old singer Hayes Campbell and much drama ensues. Check out the first trailer:

Prime Video has dropped the trailer for The Idea of You, the upcoming romcom starring Anne Hathaway as a 40-year-old single mom who embarks on an unlikely romance with a 24-year-old boy band star.
With the line “We met at Coachella” destined to be some sort of rom-com classic, the movie, based on Robinne Lee’s novel, follows Solène (Hathaway), whose husband (Reid Scott) walks out on the marriage just when the couple’s 16-year-old daughter (Ella Rubin) has her heart set on attending the Coachella music fest. Mom steps in to save the day and the trip.
At the fest, Solène meets Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), a Harry Styles-type pop star. No surprise that sparks fly. “I’m too old for you,” she says. “No you’re not,” says he.
Michael Showalter directs the film from a script by exec producer Jennifer Westfeldt.

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt had been together for 18 years when they announced their separation in September 2015. After their split, the "Mad Men" star remained single for a few years before he began dating again. In June 2017, Hamm told InStyle that being alone was "really hard," however, he needed the space in order to focus on his mental health. "Medical attention is medical attention whether it's for your elbow or for your teeth or for your brain," Hamm said at the time.
The actor's years in therapy proved to be a life-changing experience. During an interview on "The Howard Stern Show" in September 2022, Hamm revealed therapy led him to become more emotionally available after being able to "unpack" the trauma of losing his mother at a young age. "It's been a process of working on myself," he said. So when Hamm began dating actor Anna Osceola in 2020, he said, he...

Actor Brittany Snow (the Pitch Perfect franchise, Hairspray) just about nails it as a writer-director with her first feature, Parachute, a rom-dram set in New York City and co-written with Becca Gleason (Summer ‘03).
This astute, impressively honest portrait of a complicated relationship between Riley (Courtney Eaton from Yellowjackets, who picked up a prize for her performance at SXSW), a young woman with an eating disorder and addiction issues, and Ethan (Thomas Mann, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), a guy disposed toward co-dependency, is perhaps a smidge messy structurally. If you've spent any time on social media over the last few years, you've probably run across at least one person gushing over English singer/songwriter Harry Styles. Recently, the English-born musician has inspired more than his fair share of Facebook groups, Instagram stories, TikToks, and novels. Styles also inspired Anna Todd's Wattpad story, "After," which was adapted into a popular film in 2019, and his influence on writers and filmmakers will continue in 2022.
Late one night, actress and writer Robinne Lee stumbled across the musician online and was shocked by his "aesthetically perfect" face. Styles' looks and preference for older women inspired Lee to write "The Idea of You" back in 2017. As with anything remotely associated with Styles, the story became a hit, and an adaptation of the book with Anne Hathaway is currently in the works.
Here's everything we know so far about "The Idea of You."
