When she auditioned for the film Strangers in Good Company (1990) she was afraid they would think she was too old for the part so she lied and said she was only 80 when she was actually 87.
Was one of eight children born to a cabinet maker in London. She went to work when she was 14 years old.
Lost her only child in 1957 and spent the rest of her life grieving for her son. She moved to New York and worked at Bloomingdales. Sometime between 1957 and 1962 she married a second time which ended in divorce. She returned to London and worked as a saleswoman at Harrod's. After her third husband died, she swore to never marry again.
Had an older sister who became an actress and dreamed of acting herself. However, she never had the chance until she became much older.
