Intro: Comedies involving a central pair of main characters usually have one thing in common; their premise is generally very simple. Take 1994’s Dumb and Dumber, for example. The Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels all-time classic comedy, in which two hapless, hopeless losers attempt to return a suitcase full of cash to its rightful owner, thrives on how simple both the plot and the two main characters are. The Farrellys had an amazing knack in the 1990s for delivering comedies that were hilarious because they had a simple idea for the plot, plus they weren’t worried about upsetting anybody with outrageous sequences. Those were the days. You couldn’t produce mainstream comedies such as Me, Myself and Irene, Kingpin or There’s Something About Mary nowadays, for fear of upsetting someone.

It’s the age of the biopic, and many filmmakers are turning to classic rock artists as their subjects. It makes sense — their music has moved people for decades, and their lives are usually full of enough intrigue to fill at least one film. As news of the new Bob Dylan biopic continues to trickle out and we not-so-patiently await a Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac movie, here are six classic rock biopics to watch.

Wilson himself said that upon watching the film, he was astonished by both portrayals of him, particularly Dano’s.

These days he's known as one of the finest actors in the industry for his almost unmatched versatility and range. Gary Oldman is frequently unrecognizable from role to role. Not only has he built a respected career as a result, but back in the mid-80s — before his appearances in the Harry Potter franchise or Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy — Oldman was coming off an acclaimed run in the theater and was yet to make his name in the film industry.
Having starred in 1982's "Remembrance," the actor wouldn't appear in another film until 1986 when he had to be talked into playing Sid Vicious. By his own admission, Oldman had little to no interest in the Sex Pistols bassist (or punk in general), but was convinced by director Alex Cox to take on the lead role in his retelling of Vicious' dysfunctional relationship with Nancy Spungen. Almost 30 years later,...

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest film actors of all time. His versatility is so established now that there are internet memes about his uncanny ability to just simply vanish into a role. No other actor could convincingly play real-life figures as diverse as Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, let alone such contrasting literary characters as Dracula and George Smiley. It's this versatility that has led to his success and longevity as an actor; he can play the hero, the villain, a supporting role, or a mere cameo, and never gives a part anything less than his all, whether he's playing Beethoven or a CGI peacock.
It's true that he displayed a propensity for playing villains in outlandish science fiction romps like "The Fifth Element," popcorn actioners like "Air Force One," or serial killer thrillers like "Hannibal." However, more recently he has received long overdue recognition for his...

The first attempt to dramatize the Sex Pistols saga came with the release of the Julien Temple’s movie The Great Rock and Roll Swindle in 1980, just two years after the band imploded. The farcical film tells the story from the perspective of manager Malcolm McLaren and is so cartoonish that parts of it are actually animated.
It was the start of a mini-industry of Sex Pistols retrospectives that told their story from every conceivable angle, including the Gary Oldman/Chloe Webb movie Sid and Nancy, the Julien Temple documentary...

After starting out with romantic-interest characters, Preston evolved into a smart, subversive performer – most notably in the hit romcom Jerry Maguire
In some ways, Kelly Preston’s most famous role was the one outside the movies: as John Travolta’s wife. They married in 1991 and became probably the most devotedly uxorious Hollywood couple since Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. Preston and Travolta have a great sexy-funny dance routine together in the 1989 comedy The Experts, which is how they met. Preston put her acting career on hold for some of the 90s while she and Travolta started a family: having two sons, Jett and Benjamin, and a daughter, Ella. Heart-rendingly, Jett died of a seizure at the age of 16, a memory that adds a new layer of sadness to today’s news, and a new layer of sombre reflection about the great pressures that a woman in public life is expected to undergo.

The career of Ridley Scott is full of peaks and valleys. One of the peaks was the release of Thelma & Louise in 1991. Late summer is all about reflection over at The Criterion Collection, as the library is spending August offering up a handful of unsung classics and new look at some longtime favorites.
Michael Curitz’s “The Breaking Point,” a mostly overlooked Hemingway adaptation, starring John Garfield and Patricia Neal, will be available on Blu-ray for the first time, while Sacha Guitry’s “La poison” arrives on home video for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Mike Leigh’s revelatory “Meantime” is getting a 2K restoration, all the better to enjoy the early work of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman. That’s not all for Oldman fans, however, as Alex Cox’s “Sid & Nancy” hits the collection with a brand new 4K digital restoration. Finally, Walter Matthau stars in the charming comedy “Hopscotch,” also available on Blu-ray in a 2K digital restoration.
Below is the complete list of August additions, with descriptions provided by Criterion.

Riveting and repulsive, with a claustrophobic perspective that mirrors its subjects: all id, all in the moment. But it’s also shallow, all on the surface. Part of a series in which I watch and react to a film considered a classic (or a cult classic) that I’ve never seen before.
In my head, Sid Vicious looks like Gary Oldman. Even though I had never seen 1986’s Sid & Nancy until, literally, yesterday. Having now seen the movie, I feel reasonably confident in saying that I had never even seen a clip from it; there was, at least, no scene that felt familiar. Yet somehow this film has been so much a part of the pop-culture undercurrent that it had that level of impact on me sight unseen.
Having now experienced Sid & Nancy — you don’t just watch it, you get immersed in it whether you want to or not...

This 30th anniversary restoration of Alex Cox’s Beckettian masterpiece shows how punk camouflaged a lot of undiagnosed dysfunction
Related: Sid and Nancy: an intriguing glimpse into a dysfunctional relationship
Here is Alex Cox’s Beckettian masterpiece about those two prisoners of futility, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, rereleased in cinemas after 30 years: a welcome corrective to bland punk nostalgia. His film is tremendously acted by Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb with exactly the right absence of sympathy, although Cox arguably loses his nerve on this score in the film’s dying moments. It is terrifically shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, who has supervised the restored print. In the 1980s, the London and New York locations hadn’t really changed since the 70s, or even the 50s.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Hey punk fans, it's time to revisit this cult classic. Described as "the definitive [film] of the punk phenomenon", the punk rock drama Sid and Nancy is getting a re-release this year for its 30th anniversary. The film stars Gary Oldman as Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who tried to start a solo career after the band broke up in 1978. The film profiles his turbulent and destructive romance with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, played by Chloe Webb, a heroin-addicted groupie who was found dead months later. The cast includes David Hayman, Andrew Schofield, Xander Berkeley, and Courtney Love in a small role. It's always cool to see great films return to theaters for a restored re-release. Have fun. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb play the star-crossed lovers of the title, he of the Sex Pistols and she his girlfriend for the last year and a half of her life. Several theories (some more conspiratorial than others) have emerged in the nearly 40 years since, with the semi-official story — that Vicious was responsible — never being confirmed, as he died shortly after. Cox’s film about the two wasn’t a financial success at the time, but has, like “Repo Man,” become a cult classic.

The indie cult classic Sid and Nancy tells the tragic, morbid tale of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious (A young, hip Gary Oldman) and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen (Chloe Webb) as the band breaks up and Sid attempts a solo career within the tight grasp of heroin addiction. If this wasn’t sad enough, Nancy is found stabbed to death and Sid is arrested for her murder. Called “the definitive pic of the punk phenomenon,” Sid and Nancy has been given a trailer for its 30th-anniversary restoration — which includes a run in theaters before a Blu-ray release this August.

When Ghostbusters II hit theaters in 1989 and we heard the psychic on Venkman's (Bill Murray) cheesy talkshow predict that the end of the world would happen on Feb. 14, 2016, it seemed so far away. "2016?! That's the future!" we scoffed. "Cars will be flying and we'll all be eating meals in capsule form by then! That's ages away." Well, guess what, y'all? We have officially arrived at the end of the world, if you believe Elaine's (Chloe Webb) story. According to her source, which as you'll remember was an alien who bought her a drink while she was staying at the Holiday Inn in Paramus, NJ, the apocalypse is scheduled for this Valentine's Day, which is only two days...

Love can be a many splendid thing…both in triumph and sometimes in tragedy. The emphasis of this sentiment is mainly on the latter as tragedy can be defined in various degrees of despair. Consequently, we have endured all sorts of conflict between lovers in cinema throughout the history of frequenting the movies.
In You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling: Top Ten Tragic Lovers in the Movies we will look at a selection of films where the tragic circumstances have shaped the foundation of film lovers convincingly. The tragic overtones come in all varieties: marital discourse, criminal activity, fraud, addiction, etc. Granted that there are probably bigger and better choices for lovey-dovey antagonism that could be cited in You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling but hey…the outcome remains the same: hampered relationships that are creatively rooted in turmoil.

Ask pretty much any of his peers and they would tell you that Gary Oldman is one of the most eclectic and brilliant actors of our generation. With a list of characters under his belt that threatens to rival the greats of yesteryear, Oldman is the go-to character actor of our time, consistently delivering dependably top rate performances regardless of genre. In RoboCop, he plays Dr. Dennett Norton, the chief scientist of Omni Foundation and creator of the human cyborg, who battles with ethics and the corruption of the company he is a part of. Mother’s Day is more than just Hawaiian-shirt-and-jeans day at 1-800Flowers. Aside from being a regularly-scheduled reminder to us to show our moms how much we appreciate the very gift of life, it’s an opportunity to step back and consider motherhood in all its varied forms.
Tomorrow we’ll pay tribute to some of the best moms ever to place a fresh-from-the-oven apple pie onto the small screen’s windowsill – but today we’re taking a look at some of the worst television moms ever to wield a wooden spoon. (Or a sidearm.) Mind your Ps and Qs with these ladies!

Norma Bates (Bates Motel)
Oh my God, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga) – where to start? It’s almost unfair to include Norma – one of the most inept parents in the history of television – on this list because she’s clearly unwell. (And also,...

The beloved series which began in 1976 might have wrapped up earlier this year with the publication of the ninth book, The Days Of Anna Madrigal, but the classic series continues to attract fans, not only for the novels, but also for the groundbreaking Tales of the City film adaptations.

Eight years ago, writer-director-graphic novelist John Ridley was surfing the Web when he stumbled across a Jimi Hendrix song entitled "Sending My Love to Linda." A single question — "Who is Linda?" — set Ridley loose on a project that had vexed numerous screenwriters and filmmakers before him: crafting a biopic on the legendary guitarist. The result, Jimi: All Is By My Side, covers a brief period in Hendrix's life — 1966-1967, right before he plays the Monterey Pop Festival — and stars OutKast's André 3000 as the late musician.

With the premiere of HBO’s Looking still over a week away, this is the perfect time to remember another TV series about a group of gay (and straight) friends in San Francisco. It was 20 years ago today that Tales Of the City made its American television debut.
Based on the newspaper column–later book series–by Armistead Maupin, Tales centers around a found family living together in a boarding house at 28 Barbary Lane. Tenants include Mary Anne Singleton, a naive girl fresh off the bus from Cleveland, Michael “Mouse” Tolliver, a gay emigré from Florida, his best friend Mona Ramsey, a frustrated feminist copywriter, and Brian Hawkins, a leftie lawyer who dropped out and became a waiter. They all live under the eye of enigmatic landlady Anna Madrigal. Tales stars Laura Linney as Mary Anne, Marcus D’Amico as Mouse, Chloe Webb as Mona, Paul Gross as Brian and Olympia Dukakis as Mrs.

Since premiering in January of 2011, the U.S. adaptation of Shameless (based on the successful British show) has made us laugh, cry, gasp, and fall deeply, irreversibly in love with the scrappy Gallagher family – warts and all. For all its over-the-top schemes and its obvious love for shocking its audience, the show brings some much-needed attention to the struggles faced by American families who are barely getting by. While deadbeat dad Frank (William H. Macy) may be the lynchpin of the family and the show, the true heroes are the kids, including noble step-in mother figure Fiona (Emmy Rossum), slacker genius Lip (Jeremy Allen White), and our personal favorite, gay aspiring soldier Ian (Cameron Monaghan).
Picking the top five episodes was pretty tough, because even mediocre Shameless is generally pretty awesome television. But here are five eps that were strongest in capturing the magical mayhem that is the Gallagher clan…...

Chicago – Another week of Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming options for you to peruse courtesy of HollywoodChicago.com’s “What to Watch.” Every week, we gather a select few of the most recent Blu-ray & DVD releases, toss in at least one On Demand option we’ve seen, and present them in a checklist order for you to knock out through Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, or good, old-fashioned Blu-ray (yes, that sounds funny to me too). This week’s is the strongest yet by far. Everything in here is worth a look, all the way down to #9. This is just the order you should watch ‘em in more than anything else.

It’s been 25 years since the critically-acclaimed Vietnam war drama China Beach aired. Blandings Acorn Media
Kieran Kinsella
Prepare to be amused because on 3 September, Acorn Media are releasing the BBC’s hysterically funny Blandings on DVD. The six-part character-based comedy is based on the Blandings Castle stories by P.G. Wodehouse (Jeeves and Wooster). Like most of his work, Blandings pokes fun at the aristocracy and the class divisions that formed the backbone of Downton Abbey-era Britain.
Timothy Spall (The Syndicate) is the king of the castle as it were. He plays Lord Clarence Emsworth — the pig-loving, Lord of the Manor who dreams of leading a quiet life. His biggest problem is his domineering younger sister Connie, Lady Keeble (Jennifer Saunders). Widowed some years before, she has taken to creating and enforcing rules in the Blandings Castle. While Connie is a stickler for the rules, Clarence’s second son Freddie Threepwood is anything but. He is a profligate who can’t behave...

Helena Bonham Carter has made a habit out of playing fantastical, eccentric characters. The British actress has cut off heads as the zany Red Queen in "Alice in Wonderland," cursed helpless muggles as Bellatrix Lestrange in "Harry Potter," and even served up fresh, hot meat (not the good kind) pies as Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd." In "The Lone Ranger," which opens this week, she plays a woman who runs a brothel house.
But what about the woman behind these uniquely outrageous characters? Below, we run down 25 little-known facts about Bonham-Carter, including the roles she almost played and her side business that helps jazz up your jeans.
1. She is the first cousin of Baroness Jane Bonham-Carter. She is also the great-granddaughter of H.H. Asquith who was British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916.
2. She was denied admission to King's College, Cambridge University, but not because she was a bad student; the...

As with all portrayals of punk, its authenticity can be, and was, questioned. But with lead performances of this quality it's really all about the relationships, messed up as they were
Sid and Nancy (1986)
Director: Alex Cox
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: B–
Sid Vicious was the bassist of punk band the Sex Pistols from 1977 to 1978. When his girlfriend Nancy Spungen was murdered in October 1978, he was charged with the crime. He died of a heroin overdose before the case could come to trial.
Casting
Sid Vicious (Gary Oldman) and Johnny Rotten (Andrew Schofield) are vandalising a Rolls-Royce on a London street. Can of paint in hand, Sid kicks in the windscreen to reveal a nonplussed Scottish terrier sitting in the driver's seat. "Go on, Sidney," says Johnny. "Spray the beast." "Nah," replies Sid. "It's a really good dog." What a kind heart. Oldman and Chloe Webb are astonishingly good as Sid and Nancy,...

Those Gallagher nutjobs sure have packed a lot of wrongness into a mere 24 episodes, haven't they? As we count down to the Season 3 premiere on Sunday, let's remember some of their ... um ... finer moments.

1. Eating Bald Eagle at Thanksgiving (Ep. 2.11)
Well, hey - Benjamin Franklin did lobby for the national bird to be the turkey. So they're not roasting an endangered species to succulent perfection, they're just paying tribute to our forefathers. Right?
2. Using Carl as Bait for a Pedophile Priest (Ep. 1.05)
Thankfully, budding sociopath Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) can handle himself, but the fact that Lip (Jeremy Allen White) and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) would dangle the kid in front of the old perv like a jerky treat is pretty foul. In the end, they did get "The Groper" to perform Kev and V's...

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are the unlikely twins resulting from a genetic engineering experiment in Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman's good-nurtured comedy. It doesn't take a genius to see how the comedy might evolve with Arnie as the perfect specimen and Danny as the scheming lowlife, but everyone has fun turning the concept into a naughtier version of The Prince And The Pauper. Kelly Preston and Chloe Webb play the girlfriends who help the brothers reconcile their differences.

It’s time for television awards, and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (Btja), of which I am a proud member, announced the nominees for our second annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
I would often give out my thoughts on the nominees, and my picks, right away, but I’m going to keep most of them to myself for the moment, because I’m more interested in hearing what you think.
Was a show left out that you really think should have gotten a nod? Did shows get noms that they shouldn’t have? I have some answers for both, but I want to know your opinion. Frankly, some of them are very strange to me. Hatfields & McCoys picked up a nomination for acting, but not as Best Movie/Miniseries? That’s just nuts.

With Showtime’s recent dramas Homeland and Shameless, characters with bipolar disorder on television are no longer on the fringes. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "TV Tackles Bipolar Disorder," in which I explore the portrayals of Carrie Mathison and Monica Gallagher, played by Claire Danes and Chloe Webb, as individuals with bipolar disorder and how those realistic and nuanced portrayals both shape their respective series but also help to remove the stigma associated with mental illness. I talk to Homeland co-creator Alex Gansa about Carrie's illness and how her decision to turn to Ect will affect Season Two (beginning in September) and with Shameless writer/producer Etan Frankel about the handling of Monica and how her condition has molded the Gallagher family. On Homeland, Claire Danes’ Carrie Mathison is a brilliant and ambitious CIA analyst, gifted with a beautiful mind that sees connections and...

After last week's really heavy episode of Shameless, "Fiona Interrupted" brought us some resolutions to all the chaos.
The two biggest developments were Karen having her baby and Monica attempting suicide in front of her children on Thanksgiving. While Karen giving birth was set to be a semi-joyous occasion - despite the fact that she was giving him up for adoption - things went awry. The baby was Asian, so it turns out Lip was Not the father, which was devastating to him but obviously not devastating enough considering he went back to watch Karen sleep.
Hasn't Lip had enough? She's a heartless sociopath. I know there was some confusion as to whether or not the baby has Down Syndrome and the answer is yes, he does. The adoptive parents changed their mind and, as we know, Sheila and Jody stole the baby from the hospital.

Robert Duvall makes his screen debut (sans dialogue) as the enigmatic Boo Radley. DVD and Blu-ray double edition. Have you ever wondered how Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy) became TV's most vile, deadbeat dad? Well, you know what they say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Coming up on Showtime's "Shameless," Grammy Gallagher (Louise Fletcher) is paying her son Frank a visit, straight out of jail, and she's bringing a whole lot of crazy with her.
"Grammy is going to end up mano a mano at Sheila's (Joan Cusack), on Sheila's couch, so that will be interesting," star Emmy Rossum told HuffPost TV. "When we meet Grammy, we finally understand why Frank is the way he is, especially Fiona. Grammy is Frank to the Nth degree. She's even worse. She's scheming, and when she comes back, the first thing she does when she gets out of jail, on medical furlough, is open up a meth lab in our basement, and she has Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) running it.
