After appearing in the play version of “The Piano Lesson” on Broadway, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Potts now star in Netflix’s film adaptation, which has been garnering Oscar buzz since it debuted on the festival circuit. Gold Derby recently sat down with the actors for a fun chat in which they talk about, among other things, what they hope audiences will take away from the movie. Watch the video interview above.
“I hope they see my ass on the screen, and not some ancestor — me,” Jackson jokes. He then declares, “We hope they enjoy it and that the story resonates with them. You know, everybody’s had that moment where somebody’s passed and there’s a thing that’s about to be divided up, or one thing that somebody said was left to them.” The 2021 Academy Honorary Award recipient is also looking forward to viewers “making choices...

Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, with fan-favorite characters in “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover.” The singer and actress soon started dabbling in feature films, where she earned the plum role of Mj, Tom Holland‘s love interest, in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” movies. Zendaya’s biggest claim to fame was in 2020, when she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the Best Drama Actress category for playing a teen drug addict on “Euphoria.” Her career continues to blossom thanks to recent releases like “Challengers” (directed by Luca Guadagnino) and “Dune” (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

The original 1987 play “The Piano Lesson” by August Wilson had a “profound” effect on Malcolm Washington‘s life, he tells Gold Derby. The director and co-writer (with Virgil Williams) of the Netflix film adaptation recently sat down for a Q&a with actor Ray Fisher, who plays the inquisitive Lymon, a friend of the central Charles family who argues over what to do with their heirloom piano. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“The themes in this play are so strong,” the filmmaker declares. “They’re so universal and so intimate, too, and they grab you. So when I read it, it was a call to action. It was like, okay, even if I wasn’t making the film or anything like that, I just knew I had to engage these ideas and wrestle with these things for myself. And I was honored to be able to turn that into a movie.

Here’s how actors learned backward choreography for Tenet ( Photo Credit – Netflix )
When Tenet hit theaters, it wasn’t just another Christopher Nolan mind-bender but a spectacle unlike anything seen before. The film didn’t just dabble in time inversion; it made time its playground, taking everything we thought we knew about movie magic and flipping it… in a recent behind-the-scenes reveal, we learned just how far Nolan went to sell his twisted vision: He shot all the inversion scenes not once but twice—forward and backward. And yes, that meant actors had to master their roles in reverse.
This bold decision wasn’t just for show but a meticulous choice to nail the time-warped reality Nolan envisioned. While traditional time travel plays out with a character jumping from one point in time to another, Tenet dealt with time inversion. In other words, the characters didn’t just travel through...

The Piano Lesson is the third film adaptation of the work of playwright August Wilson, whose bibliography and legacy have been championed by Denzel Washington. It serves as the feature directorial debut of Washington’s son, Malcolm Washington, and is not only an excellent adaptation of its source material but also one of the most auspicious first features in recent memory.
The Piano Lesson Review
The Piano Lesson follows a family who get into conflict over the future of a valuable family heirloom — a piano dating back to their freed slave ancestors, which they come to believe might be haunted. Wilson has a very dense, complex style that previous cinematic adaptions have struggled to navigate, but The Piano Lesson stands up to the challenge.
Unlike many playwrights, Wilson was known for his more naturalistic approach to dialogue, with heavy use of vernacular and other devices to allow him to tell...

Seven years ago, a young filmmaker named Malcolm Washington made the regional festival rounds with his debut short film, “Benny Got Shot,” and won the filmmaker-to-watch award at the Atlanta Film Festival among other honors. This year, Washington has made his feature film debut with “The Piano Lesson,” an August Wilson adaptation with an all-star cast and an awards-friendly release date from Netflix. Malcolm Washington has screened “The Piano Lesson” at several top film festivals this fall – including the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival – and will be honored with the Breakthrough Director award at this year’s Montclair Film Festival.
For young directors just starting – even those without Oscar-winning dads like Denzel Washington – that path is the dream scenario, one made possible by events like the one happening now in Montclair, New Jersey. Just ask Hannah Sperling, the 20-year-old director of the short film “Meek,” which...

“Gladiator II” screened for the first time on Friday, October 18 at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, and based on early reactions on social media from film critics and influencers, it is “a big, bloody and bad ass action spectacle,” a “true epic and Ridley Scott’s best in years,” and an all-caps “Masterpiece.”
Though official reviews are embargoed until a later date, the early reactions highlighted Scott’s direction, Mescal, Pascal, and Washington’s performances, and the overall production values of the sequel worthy of its Oscar-winning predecessor.
Following a screening of the 148-minute sequel, cast members Paul Mescal (as Lucius Verus), Connie Nielsen (as Lucilla), Denzel Washington (as Macrinus), and Fred Hechinger (as Emperor Caracalla) engaged in a panel discussion moderated by Jacqueline Coley, awards editor of Rotten Tomatoes. Adrien Brody won an Oscar at the 2003 ceremony for his performance in “The Pianist.” Despite his impressive career, that film has brought him his only nomination. Things could change in early 2025 now that his latest film “The Brutalist” has him competing for Best Actor. An Oscars victory would add him into an exclusive club that currently just has seven members: performers to win two Academy Awards for their only two nominations.
Our Gold Derby odds for Best Actor currently have Brody tied for second place with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at 9/2 odds. Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) is out front in first place at 4/1 odds. We then have Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) at 6/1, Daniel Craig (“Queer”) at 21/2, Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”) at 16/1, and John David Washington (“The Piano Lesson”) at 30/1.

A change is as good as a rest, and in the world of Hollywood’s maestros, Christopher Nolan is embracing this adage with aplomb. After years of delivering cinematic marvels under the Warner Bros. banner, the director is embarking on a new adventure with Universal Pictures, leaving movie buffs wagging their tongues in anticipation. Set to release next year, Nolan’s forthcoming film promises to be another masterpiece in the making.

But why the sudden shift for a director whose name had become almost synonymous with Warner Bros. after directing smash hits like The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk? In 1999, Orange County natives Gregg Schwenk and Todd Quartararo were working in the corporate sector but shared a love for cinema and producing events. They looked around their seaside locale and saw potential. “A beautiful coastal setting, surrounded by a vibrant business community and enthusiastic filmgoers, combined with our proximity to the film industry epicenter made Newport Beach the ideal place to launch an international film festival and build a world class event,” says Schwenk.
From those humble beginnings, Schwenk became the founder and CEO of the Newport Beach Film Festival, which has since become an internationally recognized event. This year, Newport celebrates its 25th anniversary during its Oct. 17-24 run. It’s also become a stop along the awards campaign trail for Oscar hopefuls and a way to celebrate some of the biggest names in the industry. A crucial change in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actor now has Ralph Fiennes saying, “Amen.” The “Conclave” star has officially broken his tie with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Fiennes now has leading 4/1 odds to win the trophy, compared to Domingo’s second-place odds of 9/2. It goes without saying that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things will undoubtedly keep changing as our Experts, Editors and Users continue to update their predictions.
Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in the Focus Features mystery-thriller from director Edward Berger. Fellow cast members include Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.

The 13th edition of the Montclair Film Festival will kick off this week with the second U.S. screening of Edward Berger’s “Conclave” since the Telluride Film Festival, one of several top awards contenders scheduled for the prestigious New Jersey event.
“Conclave” premiered in Colorado in late August and later showed during the Toronto International Film Festival and the Hamptons Film Festival. The Focus Features release features an ensemble led by Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Carlos Diehz, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. It is expected to factor heavily in the Oscars race, with Fiennes a top contender for Best Actor.
But “Conclave” isn’t the only notable film or event scheduled for the Montclair Film Festival, which runs from October 18 through October 27. “We are incredibly grateful to these filmmakers for bringing their work to us,” said Montclair Film Artistic Director and Co-Head Tom Hall. “This year’s program shows...

Malcolm Washington and his cast recently discussed their film adaptation of celebrated playwright August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” at an event in London. Set in the 1930s, the film version explores tensions between siblings over an heirloom piano amid the hardships of the Great Depression era.
While seeking to faithfully represent Wilson’s poetic dialogue, Washington emphasized visual storytelling. “We wanted to take the job of adapting it seriously, but respect the new medium,” he said. For the opening seven minutes, no dialogue is used, relying instead on imagery, music and sound design.
Actress Danielle Deadwyler praised Washington’s direction for giving actors freedom during rehearsals. “There were no constraints placed on our performances,” she noted.
Star John David Washington said the cast aimed to make the film their own, while upholding the play’s spirit. “We’re putting our honesty and vulnerability into it to craft a full cinematic experience,...

The Piano Lesson director Malcolm Washington came to Deadline’s Contenders London with the stars of his feature helming debut — John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler — as well as composer Alexandre Desplat, to discuss his adaptation of the famous 1987 play by August Wilson. Set in the Depression-era 1930s, The Piano Lesson is a story that centers on a brother and sister’s disagreement about what to do with a family heirloom.
Fielding the first question, Malcolm Washington explained that the film’s sophisticated visual style was key to approaching Wilson’s story. “There’s such a beautiful poetry and rhythm to the dialogue that’s inherent to the text,” he said, “and we wanted to take the job of adaptation seriously, but respect the medium in which we’re working. And that inherently meant a consideration of image and sound — how they function together when you separate the two. I...

The State of the Race
Similar to two years ago, the current race for the Best Actor Oscar has four names that seem to have their nominations locked in, with that fifth nomination slot up for grabs.
The Venice premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” confirmed suspicions that Daniel Craig could be a major contender this year, but the real surprise from that same festival was just how much Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” and by virtue its lead Adrien Brody, really has a shot at becoming an Academy Awards frontrunner across categories.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. [The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.] Of this year’s leading contenders for Best Actor all but one (who stars in a long-awaited sequel to a Best Picture champ) tick at least one of those two boxes. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Actor.)
Ralph Fiennes, 61, is devilishly delightful as a cardinal in Edward Berger‘s thriller “Conclave.” It’s been almost three decades since he was last at the Oscars for his starring role in the Best Picture winner “The English Patient.” His only previous bid was for his scene-stealing role in the 1994 champ “Schindler’s List.”

Zoe Saldana has waited quite a while for her first Oscar nomination, and now it looks like she could win too. The “Emilia Perez” co-star has recently been gaining on Best Supporting Actress front-runner Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”), and now they’re tied. Both women get 4/1 odds of prevailing, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users.

To go lead or not to go lead? That is the question. Luckily, we got a lot of answers this week. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Oscar category campaigns of several high-profile contenders.
Saoirse Ronan already has a clear lead performance in “The Outrun,” but she won’t compete against herself for votes in the category. As Gold Derby reported, the four-time Oscar nominee will go supporting for Steve McQueen‘s upcoming World War II drama “Blitz,” in which she plays a mother who’s separated from her 9-year-old son, George (Elliott Heffernan). We discuss why this isn’t a case of category fraud and her likelihood of becoming the 13th performer to score double Oscar nominations in one year.

The Gotham Awards have named the first filmmaker to be honored at the 2024 ceremony: Denis Villeneuve.
This year’s ceremony, which will take place on Monday, December 2, will toast the “Dune: Part Two” auteur with the Gotham Director Tribute.
Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel film starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya and was released in March 2024. The feature was the sequel to Villeneuve’s 2021 Oscar-winning “Dune,” which was adapted from the first half of Frank Herbert’s beloved novel of the same name.
In addition to the expanding “Dune” franchise, French-Canadian filmmaker Villeneuve has previously directed “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), “Arrival” (2016), and “Sicario” (2015), among other features. The Gotham also has a tie to one of Villeneuve’s early films, “Incendies” (2010), which the organization supported through the IFP Week Program.

With “The Piano Lesson,” John David Washington had the rare acting opportunity to interpret August Wilson’s classic text for the stage in Broadway’s 2022 revival and now again in Netflix’s new feature adaptation, due Nov. 22.
Speaking with TheWrap as part of our TIFF 2024 interview and photo studio, Washington shared that playing Boy Willie on both stage and screen was “a liberating experience.” It helped, too, that he was led behind the camera by his brother Malcolm Washington, who makes his feature film directorial debut with “The Piano Lesson.”
“[It was] a liberating experience, given my reverence and my respect for the our filmmaker, for our director, our leader — what he envisioned, how he wanted to open up this story cinematically,” John David told TheWrap.
