The film world premiered at Venice and then headed to Telluride and Toronto, is currently screening at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and will next screen at the Zurich Film Festival, Filmfest Hamburg, Hamptons International Film Festival, and the Mill Valley Film Festival.

With no end to the dual strikes on the horizon — speaking at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday, SAG-AFTRA national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said he saw no sign the major studios and streamers will willing to return to the negotiating table —the independent film industry is beginning to adjust to the possibility of that the actors and writers walkouts could potentially continue for months, perhaps well into next year. What that means for the business of making and selling indie films is the subject of most conversations overheard before screenings and over drinks among industry executives at TIFF.

Mads Mikkelsen isn’t interested in criticism of the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in his new movie “The Promised Land.” When a reporter pointed out that the movie is “a Danish production that’s entirely Nordic” and asked if the actor is “worried” about the movie being ineligible to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar once new rules go into effect next year, Mikkelsen shot back, “Are you?”
He continued, “I’m serious and honest, because you’re putting us on the spot, so you answer the question.”
The tense moment took place at the movie’s press conference at the Venice Film Festival following its premiere. The reporter drew the contrast between Mikkelsen’s new film and recent Oscar winner “Parasite’s” own lack of diversity — a different situation both due to the film coming from a non-majority white country, as well as the new rules not yet being in effect.

Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, who was behind “The Dark Tower” with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey – is bringing back the historical epic with “The Promised Land,” which world premieres in Venice Film Festival competition section.
Set in 1755 and based on a true story, it sees captain Ludvig Kahlen (played by Mads Mikkelsen) deciding to finally conquer the Danish heathland and build a colony there. But its ruler, Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), doesn’t want to share the inhospitable land. Or anything else, for that matter.
“Today, it’s more about action and superheroes, but I’m very interested in taking that genre, one that has gotten a bit lost, and modernizing it,” he says.
“It has this western quality because it’s about pioneers in a new land, trying to build something, but I was more interested in looking at old epics like ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ I think it’s a genre we need.

Denmark has finally started addressing the lack of diversity in local movies and TV series. From afar, the country is the epitome of liberalism and home to provocative filmmakers like Lars von Trier and a new wave of directors with foreign origins, such as Ali Abassi (“Holy Spider”) and Milad Alami (“The Charmer”).
But up close, the Nordic country has been sliding to the far right and enacting Europe’s harshest anti-immigration laws, pushing the local film community to react. The alarm was recently rung by A Bigger Picture, a female-led advocacy group spearheaded by Laura Allen Müller (“Borgen”), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (“The Wheel of Time”), Malaika B. Mosendane (“Chosen”), Siir Tilif (“Fatal Crossing”) and Dorcas Joanna Hansen (“Elvira”).
Along with newspaper articles and appearances on TV shows, the campaign triggered the most vivid reactions when it flagged the all-white casts of three high-profile Danish productions, including Von Trier’s “The Kingdom series.

Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom, the TV show set on the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagen hospital which ran for two seasons in the 1990s, is to return for a third and final five-episode run that will shoot in 2021.
The cult show, which was released as a five-hour movie in some territories, had originally been planned to run for three seasons but never completed due in part to the deaths of key cast members Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes. Producers Zentropa are keeping details under wraps but did say the new edition will be a mix of new and returning characters.
Von Trier has penned the script, again with Niels Vørsel, and will direct all five episodes under the title The Kingdom Exodus. Plot specifics are unknown but it is expected to explore unsolved stories of the hospital as well as reigniting old feuds between the Swedes and the Danes.

TrustNordisk has closed a raft of deals on Christoffer Boe’s “A Taste Of Hunger,” the Danish romantic drama starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game Of Thrones”) and Katrine Greis-Rosenthal (“A Fortunate Man”).
The movie, now in post-production and set for a Feb. 25 release in Denmark, has inspired a virtual reality experience “A Taste of Hunger – VR” which is also directed by Boe and is being presented at the Venice Film Festival as part of the Venice VR Expanded program.
“A Taste of Hunger” has Coster-Waldau and Greis-Rosenthal play a power couple within the Danish gourmet scene who run the highly-popular restaurant Malus in Copenhagen. The couple is willing to sacrifice everything to achieve their dream — getting the coveted Michelin star. Boe co-wrote the script with Tobias Lindholm, the writer-director of “A War,” who co-wrote many films by Thomas Vinterberg, including his latest “Another Round.”

“It’s not enough to make just a kitchen table drama about a man and a woman.”
Over $100 billion of investment is flowing into production and licensing of content annually, according to a new report, The Global Production Deluge, previewed in Berlin today (Feb 23) by Olsberg Spi.
Much of that is being driven by the streamers – not just Netflix (which spent $17bn on content in 2019) but also Amazon, Disney, HBO, Apple, Comcast and others.
Worldwide spending on non-sports content was estimated by Ampere Analysis to be $123 billion in 2018, a 29% increase from $95 billion in 2013. A further rise of 26% over the next five years is forecast.
