Shout! Factory's genre imprint Scream Factory has recently released four-disc Blu-ray set of the [Rec] films. The first came out in 2007 and became a sensation. Directed by both Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, Rec starred Manuela Velasco as Angela, a young reporter (with her camera person) just following around a small team of firefighters on the overnight shift for her program. Nothing out of the ordinary happens for a bit --- until it Does, and then all hell breaks loose within the apartment complex they visit. They become sealed in by the authorities, who will shoot them if they try to escape. Meanwhile, several residents exhibit seriously scary --- and murderous --- behavior. The haunted house quality of this film was made even scarier by the found footage techniques,...

When an established film series decides to shed its formula and try something wildly different in its structure – if not exactly its content – I can’t help but feel both relieved and wary. If it ain’t broke, right? On the other hand, later instalments risk becoming stale reruns of earlier movies with no sense of development or even surprise, as every gag, jump and plot twist possible has already been thrown at the audience.
Such is the dilemma I found myself in with [Rec]4: Apocalypse, which ditches the found-footage style of its predecessors in favour of going for full-blown narrative cinema. I must admit, I saw no reason for concern in the intense opening sequence, as the presence of properly-framed action and quick-paced editing (editing!

Director: Jaume Balagueró. Writers: Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Cast: Manuela Velasco, Paco Manzanedo and Héctor Colomé. [Rec] 4: Apocalypse is the final film in a long running zombie film series. The original, shot in Barcelona, Spain, started in a small apartment building. Since 2007, this series has gone on to spawn three sequels and two American remakes. This found footage horror franchise continues to excite film fans. But, what of the final film? This final film offers more pulse-pounding entertainment, in a small quarantine zone (a freighter). Here, Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) returns from the first two films to put an infection to rest, a true burial at sea, forever. The ensuing ninety minutes brings lots of terror and drama as [Rec] 4 ends with a bang. Fans of the series will recognize Ángela Vidal from the original title. She was the vivacious, young reporter who found herself in the middle of a biological catastrophe.

The zombie virus of the influential [Rec] franchise worked its way through the residents of an apartment building and the celebratory guests at a massive wedding reception, and in [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, it looks to ravage the crew of a ship at sea. We now have two new clips from the recently released movie, which show how handy an outboard motor can be in fighting off infected humans (and monkeys?).
“Several hours have passed since the terrible events that ravaged the old building in Barcelona. After the chaos of the first few moments, the army decided to intervene and an elite group of soldiers infiltrated the building in order to plant detonators and put an end to this nightmare once and for all. The mission is a success; quick and precise. Angela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the fireman just hours before, manages to make it out alive.

Wreckollect: Balaguero Returns to Famed Franchise for Gasping Final Chapter
The good news is that we’ve probably seen the last creative juice finally squeezed out of what started as one of the best found footage horror films to arrive in the bleak, stupendously limited subgenre with [Rec 4]: Apocalypse. Originating with the innovative and even effectively frightening first installment back in 2007, co-director Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza created one enjoyable sequel back in 2009 with [Rec 2], at least in as much as it cleansed our palette of the unnecessary 2008 American remake, Quarantine. But then things got murky, with Plaza breaking off to make his own (assumedly) final chapter, [Rec 3]: Genesis, which lopped off the found footage angle after an extended intro and went into comical hyper drive. Now, Balaguero comes back alone for his own stamp of finality, which does acknowledge the existence of the third film, but carries out the strand developed from the first two.

Whether or not you’re a fan of [Rec] 2 (which I Loved) or [Rec] 3: Genesis (which I moderately liked), horror fans understand that Jaume Balagueró’s [Rec] 4: Apocalypse brings about the end of a franchise that redefined our perception of found footage horror. [Rec] was one of The movies that pushed my cinematic tastes towards atrocious deaths and jolting scares, and knowing that TV personality Ángela Vidal will finally be going off the air for good brings a tear to my eye – despite the final film’s decision to abandon found footage completely.
[Rec] 3: Genesis teases us with wedding footage to start, until a character scolds the cameraman for continuing to film while simultaneously fighting zombies (finally), where [Rec] 4: Apocalypse goes full theatrical despite some surveillance camera footage. Balagueró’s solo effort rocks back and forth between being a furious zombie death cruise and a dull lazy river excursion, churning like choppy waters,...

[Rec] 4 is largely straightforward. In just a few weeks Magnola Pictures will release [Rec] 4: Apocalypse, the latest sequel in the fantastic Spanish zombie series first started by Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró back in 2007. What's particularly cool about the [Rec] sequels is that they have yet to just rehash what made the first movie so terrifying. 2 is more of an action movie, 3 is a fun, playful party movie, and now 4 has a bit of a sci-fi flavor to it. Directed by Balagueró, [Rec] 4: Apocalypse involves characters from the first three movies all being brought together on a boat by scientists who are trying to prevent the further spread of the zombielike virus. Their plan is to reverse engineer a cure from Angela (Manuela Velasco), but as you can guess, things do not go...

After the lacklustre Rec 3: Genesis, the hugely-popular Spanish virus series is returning to the key components of its success: gore and scares. Forgetting the events of Genesis, the fourth outing, Rec 4: Apocalypse, has enlisted director of the first two films, Jaume Balagueró to remind audiences of just what made the first Rec so damn frightening. If you don’t believe us, take a peek at the new red band trailer above.
Storywise, Rec 4 will pick up straight after the ending of Rec 2. That’s right, back to that dreaded apartment complex chock full of demonic flesh-eaters. Dropping the found footage format of its predecessors, the story will follow long-suffering reporter Angela Vidal (played again by Manuela Velasco) who wakes to find she’s not in quarantine anymore! No, a group of soldiers have come to her aid and scuttled her away aboard an ocean freighter along with the virus.

The found footage horror franchise [Rec] began back in 2007, and it's still going strong, at least overseas, with the fourth installment [Rec] 4: Apocalypse. After wreaking havoc on a wedding in the last film, this one takes the action to an oil tanker, and also brings back Manuela Velasco as the young television reporter who was stuck in the quarantined building from the original film. After making it out alive, they've isolated her on this boat, but that may not be enough to contain the virus. This is a red band trailer with lots of blood and gore, so it's probably not best to fire it up around kids or at the dinner table. Watch it below! Oh, we're doing this again? For the three of you who were big fans of "[Rec]" in 2007, and seven years later, are still itching for more viral madness, the arrival of "[Rec 4] Apocalypse" will probably be welcome news. For the rest of us, we'll just marvel that the found footage series has lasted this long, spawning a fourth chapter with a brand new trailer landing today. And perhaps appropriately, this is Nsfw. Anyway, for those keeping track, Manuela Velasco has returned from the second movie, with the story now set on an oil tanker, where more madness and mayhem awaits. It seems no one can escape the nasty virus, and before this ship docks, there will be plenty of blood, gore, and more. Is it anything new? Nope. Will fans be happy, however many they may be? Probably. It doesn't look like the basic formula is being tweaked all that much with a new location,...

When Rec crept out of the shadows back in 2007, it reminded horror fans that found footage is a genre that, when executed correctly, can have you glued to the edge of your seat in anxious trepidation. Fast forward to the present day and after a pair of sequels, the fourth and final instalment of the blood-drenched Spanish franchise is almost upon us, and today we learned that Magnet has acquired the film — aptly titled Rec 4: Apocalypse — for release in the United States.
In quietly pushing its left-field predecessor to one side, the fourth entry will pick up right where Rec 2 left off, and sees our protagonist — played again by Manuela Velasco — shipped off into the bowels of a giant ship out on the high seas which is, essentially, one of the last remaining havens from the deadly virus.

It's my own fault for stepping into a late night screening of Rec 4: Apocalypse. For a bit of historical perspective, I quite liked Rec, despised Rec 2 and didn't even bother with Rec 3: Genesis after hearing nothing but bad things. So why go into the fourth (and supposedly final) installment in the franchisec I guess I'm just a sucker for punishment, because this is one hell of an uninspired and lifeless sequel, holding onto mere threads before dropping into the abyss, hopefully forgotten forever. The film serves as a direct sequel to Rec 2, opening with a brief sequence within the Barcelona apartment building where television reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) entered with her crew only to be exposed to a virus that turned people into zombies. The story continues as Angela is extracted from the building only to wake up disoriented, quarantined on a ship out at sea with...

Jaume Balagueró, the director of 2007’s Rec and it’s equally terrifying 2009 sequel [link=[/link] auto]Rec 2[/link] returns to the franchise’s supposed final installment, Rec 4: Apocalypse. Picking up after the events of the second film (the third was a prequel), the fourth film follows Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), the series’ original heroine, as she fights to survive on an oil tanker that has become infested with zombie-like possession victims. Rec 3: Genesis did away with the found footage style of the first two after the opening scenes and with Apocalypse it looks like it has made the full transition to traditionally shot narrative cinema. Rec 4: Apocalypse looks like it may be a very exciting and potentially frightening conclusion to the series when it is released later this year.

Okay, I doubt Charles Bronson will be there, but if anyone could pull it off, Colin Geddes could. There are few things I look forward to with more fervor each year than Toronto's Midnight Madness selection each year. Programmer Colin Geddes is not just a phenomenal ringleader, an instigator of a controlled cinema riot every single night of the festival, but he is also a tremendous friend, the sort of person who is a pleasure to bump into anywhere at any festival in the world. Today, the announcement was made of his line-up, and my first reaction is, "I can vouch for some of those." I really liked "The Guest" when I saw it at Sundance, and I think it's got one of the weirdest performances of the year in the form of Dan Stevens, previously best known for "Downton Abbey." It's from the same team who brought you "You're Next,...

In an odd turn of events, this list has a number of films that don’t have English-language titles. They just go by whatever the original title was. Good for us. What we do see in this portion of the list is a few movies that weren’t really created specifically to be horror films, but their themes and visuals made it so. In addition, we have some heavyweights of non-horror cinema creating horror films that push the genre all the more upward. “Thinking man horror,” if you will.

Roman Polanski has made one of the greatest horror “trilogies” of all time with 1965′s British production Repulsion, 1968′s American production Rosemary’s Baby, and 1976′s French production The Tenant, completing his “Apartment Trilogy.” Unlike the other two, Polanski actually stars in The Tenant as Trelkovsky, a reserved man renting an apartment in Paris.

The official trailer for '[Rec] 4: Apocalypse' has hit the web. The new trailer for the Jaume Balaguero helmed sequel re-introduces us to TV reporter Angela Vidal running around like a possessed woman, as expected. This, the fourth installment, is the first non-found footage styled sequel (not counting the sideways sequel '[Rec] Genesis') in the franchise which sees series co-creator Balaguero solely handle the directorial duties. Spanish hottie Manuela Velasco returns for the third time as reporter Vidal who now finds herself quarantined on an old oil tanker after escaping the notorious apartment building featured in the first two movies. A new trailer has been released for [Rec] 4: Apocalypse.
Manuela Velasco returns as reporter Angela in the fourth and final instalment of the horror franchise.
Velasco's character did not appear in the third film Genesis, which dropped the first two films' found footage style and took place at a wedding.
The first two films were directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, while Plaza took the reins of Genesis, adopting a more slapstick style.
Balaguero has helmed the fourth film, which returns to the first two films' main storyline and brings back a darker atmosphere.
It sees Angela getting rescued and taken to an oil tanker base, before the quarantine is broken and survivors are attacked by infected victims of the zombie virus.
[Rec] 4: Apocalypse will be released in Spain on October 31. A UK and Us release date is yet to be confirmed.

First announced together way back in 2010, the original idea was that [.Rec] 3: Genesis and [.Rec] 4: Apocalypse would film more-or-less concurrently and be released close together. Clearly that didn't pan out, since Genesis arrived a couple of years ago. But here, finally, is a trailer for Apocalypse, picking up Manuela Velasco's story, left hanging at the end of [.Rec] 2.Series honchos Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza directed the first two [.Rec]s in tandem, but went solo for the prequel and this threequel, taking one each. Plaza handled Genesis, so Apocalypse is Balaguero's, and sees Velasco's Angela rescued and taken to an impromptu base set up on an oil tanker. Inevitably, however, the quarantine doesn't hold, and the survivors are soon once again faced with infected victims of the franchise's unique, peculiarily Catholic zombie rabies virus.Genesis abandoned the first two films' chaotic handheld found footage style after its first few minutes,...

Hey wait, they're still making these? In case you missed out on the barely there sensation, in 2007, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza turned horror heads with their riff on the found footage genre, "[Rec]." It was reasonably effective take on the style, and it caused enough of a stir that two years later Hollywood dropped a remake that no one really cared about. But the original franchise kept going with "[Rec] 2" dropping in 2009, followed by "[Rec] 3: Genesis" in 2012. And now another installment is coming, "[Rec] 4: Apocalypse," with Balagueró back behind the camera for this time since the first sequel, and it looks like not much has changed. This time around Manuela Velasco, also returning from part two, is back in the lead, with the story now relocated to an oil tanker (!?) where some untrustworthy doctors have unleashed the virus packing undead once again. It seems like another excuse to contain a lot...

Following a teaser trailer last summer, nearly a year later, a second teaser trailer for the horror sequel and franchise conclusion, [Rec] 4 Apocalypse has arrived. The film hits theaters overseas sometime this fall, and this new teaser shows off the demonic infection spreading on an oil tanker where surviving reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) has been taken for examination. The official synopsis says she's infected, but it seems like she's not the threat to everyone else on the ship, so maybe she's the key to finding the cure? Either way, this looks like a fantastic way to end the suspenseful international horror franchise. Watch it! The clip brings back Angela (Manuela Velasco), a news reporter from the first film and this time she is trapped on an oil tanker, with the infected. The exciting clip is hosted below. From the film's synopsis, Angela is the source of a new infection. She is quarantined on an isolated oil tanker as research continues on a disease, which spreads quickly from person to person. Here, the infection is unwittingly released once again and shipmates must fight against a growing horde of crazed creatures, or become fish food. There is no escape with the ship hundreds of miles from shore. [Rec] 4: Apocalypse will be released in Europe later this year. A distribution date for North America has not been announced to date. - 28 Days Later Analysis
It looks like director Jaume Balagueró has tossed aside the found footage gimmick for his latest, the fourth entry in the “Rec” franchise, “Apocalypse.” Check out the trailer for the film below, which actually looks like a cross between “28 Days Later” and those “Resident Evil” movies … except set on a boat. I still have no idea how this ties in with the third movie, 2012′s “Rec: Genesis,” or does it at all? Who knows. Trailer looks pretty good. You can’t really go wrong with a pretty girl trapped in an oil tanker being chased by bloodthirsty zombie/demon types, amirite? The young reporter Ángela is rescued from the building and taken to an oil tanker to be examined. However, it is unbeknown to the soldiers that she carries the seed of the mysterious demonic virus. Starring Manuela Velasco, Héctor Colomé, Mariano Venancio, María Alfonsa Rosso, Ismael Fritschi, and Paco Manzanedo.

Found footage films get a bad rap - and worse reviews. But the genre combines the vitality of punk rock with the reach of a video viral, and it has earned, if not respectability, then at least a respectful reappraisal. Some found footage (hereafter Ff) films are, admittedly, unwatchable (see The Devil Inside or, better, don't). But others, such as recent West Country-set religious chiller The Borderlands, or Bobcat Goldthwait's creepy Bigfoot hunt Willow Creek (out on May 2), are closer to unmissable.
Beyond an ominous title card, Ff films require little backstory, and the genre has only a brief history of its own. An uncompromising, hand-over-the-camera-lens look at totalitarianism in Vietnam-era America, Peter Watkins' 1971 mock-doc Punishment Park is considered Ff's chief forebear. Ruggiero Deodato's still-troubling Cannibal Holocaust (1979), however, is the most striking early archetype. Following a gonzo film crew into tribal Amazonia, it puts video-nasty atrocities through a film-school filter,...

10. Poltergeist
Directed by Gil Kenan
Written by David Lindsay-Abaire
USA
Release Date: November 14th
Production recently wrapped on the Poltergeist remake with Gil Kenan (Monster House) in the director’s chair and Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) producing. Little is known as they continue to put the movie together in post-production, but we do have a few details, beginning with the cast which includes Sam Rockwell (Moon), Rosemarie DeWitt and Jared Harris. We are also told that the psychic Angina (played originally by Zelda Rubinstein), isn’t going to be revived for the remake. Instead, they are replacing her character with a team of paranormal experts. Based on a vague plot summary, it sounds like the central plot points of the original movie are intact but other characters are added in, such as Carrigan Burke, a host of a TV show called Haunted House Cleaners, who stands in as the movie’s skeptic.
