V2 Escape From Hell plays like an old-fashioned, vibrantly propagandistic 1950s World War II thriller about how a daredevil Russian aviator thwarted Hitler’s last-gasp attempt to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat during the final desperate months of combat. Visually, thanks to ever-advancing CGI, this is a pretty convincing display of vintage aeronautic action that would have been very tough to recreate today using actual planes. War story and gamer aviation fanatics should eat this up.
Speaking of gamers, the makers of V2 are proudly promoting the fact that this is the first film being offered in both horizontal and vertical versions — that is, one way for the public keen to experience it the traditional way, on cinema or big TV screens, and the other for younger viewers or the merely attention-bereft who prefer watching bits of it like combat snacks on their mobile phones.

Earlier this month Twitch brought you word that Japanese action star Tak Sakaguchi had flown off to the Ukraine where he was hard at work as both an actor and action choreographer in a new film by Sergei Bodrov and Guka Omarova - a duo whose last foray into Japanese casting led to the impeccable Mongol, with Tadanobu Asano cast as Genghis Khan.
At the time we had very little to tell you other than that the film was happening but, hot on the heels of a press conference in Russia earlier today, we've got more now. Produced by Russian production giant Ctb, the film is titled Yakuza's Daughter. Bodrov and Omorova are co-directing, Bodrov and Sergei Selyanov (Bimmer, The Sword Bearer, Morphia) producing, and Night Watch / Day Watch DoP Sergey Trofimov manning the camera.
But beyond the names we've also got the first ten images from the film in the gallery below.

- The Italians apparently do it better. Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah and Paolo Sorrentino's Il Divo grabbed 5 nominations each with Toni Servillo getting nominated as best actor (see above) for his parts in both films. Two films that I thought were worthy contenders in several categories in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Three Monkeys and Abdellatif Kechiche’s The Secret of the Grain were shut out while Steve McQueen’s Hunger got two noms but failed to grab a Best Film nom. Last year’s The Orphanage and Waltz With Bashir both receive four nominations. This year’s Palme d'Or winner walked away with noms for best film and best director. Other well represented films include Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky, Joe Wright's Atonement, Andreas Dresen's Cloud 9 and Eran Riklis' Lemon Tree. Winners will be announced on December 6th in Copenhagen. Here are the categories.: European
