Could acoustic lightening strike twice? 2006 was a mythical, magical year for John Carney when Once took the Sundance Film Festival and film world by storm. With buffer items Zonad (2009) and The Rafters (2012) only whetting our appetite for another Carney gem, 2013’s surprise box office indie hit Begin Again (with Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine) sort of got us back in the saddle. We now come full circle back to another micro film with potentially lots of heart. Considered a cousin to Once, Carney enlists U2’s Bono and The Edge for the this when Irish eyes are smiling coming-of-ager romance. Currently in the midst of a certain restructuring, the Weinsteins picked up Sing Street in at the Cannes Film Fest in 2014 and it was kept off the 2015 slate. Could this semi-biographical tale be tuned up as a crowd-pleasing Park City item?

"Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling is joining the real world with the upcoming BBC adaptation of her book "The Casual Vacancy." The cast has been revealed for the BBC One mini-series, which is being produced in association with HBO, and there's at least one "Harry Potter" vet involved. Michael Gambon -- who played Dumbledore in the "Potter" pictures -- leads a cast including Keeley Hawes ("Line Of Duty"), Rory Kinnear ("Penny Dreadful"), Monica Dolan ("Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa"), Julia McKenzie ("Notes On A Scandal"), and newcomer Abigail Lawrie. Based on Rowling's bestselling book, "Vacancy" takes place in the seemingly quite village of Pagford, England, where the death of Parish Councillor Barry Fairbrother sets off a chain of events exposing the town's dark underbelly. "Casual Vacancy" is being produced by Rowling and Neil Blair's production company Bronte Film and Television. Paul Trijbits ("Saving Mr. Banks") and Rick Senat will exec produce.

Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks, the Harry Potter series), and actors Daniel Brühl (Rush, Inglourious Basterds), and Mark Rylance (The Other Boelyn Girl) have been confirmed to star in Vincent Pérez’s Alone In Berlin.
Based on a true story, Hans Fallada’s powerful and redemptive novel, written shortly after the Second World War describes a city paralyzed by fear. Otto and Anna Quangel are an ordinary couple living in a shabby apartment block in Berlin trying, like everyone else, to stay out of trouble under Nazi rule. But when their only child is killed fighting at the front, their loss propels them into an extraordinary act of resistance. They start to drop anonymous postcards all over the city attacking Hitler and his regime. If caught, it means certain execution. Soon their campaign comes to the attention of the Gestapo inspector, Escherich, and a murderous game of cat-and-mouse begins.

J.K. Rowling's magic is headed to TV. HBO and the BBC have teamed up to produce the "Harry Potter" author's first novel aimed at adults, "The Casual Vacancy," as a three-hour miniseries. Sarah Phelps, a veteran of the BBC who's written "EastEnders" and "Great Expectations," adapted the novel and Jonny Campbell ("In the Flesh") is attached to direct. Rowling will serve as executive producer along with Paul Trijbits ("Saving Mr. Banks"), Rick Senat, and her partner at Bronte Film and Television, Neil Blair. Ruth Kenley-Letts ("The Hour") will produce. Published by Little, Brown Book Group in 2012, "The Casual Vacancy" is a small town political drama set in a suburban town called Pagford. After the death of a parish councillor, an open seat on the council creates turmoil as citizens compete to fill the seat. The novel sets up battles between the rich and poor, old and young, and husbands and wives.

While Park Chan-wook’s English language debut Stoker was greeted with an icy reception at the beginning of 2013, it’s gone on to simmer in a few minds, making more than a few year end “Best Of” lists (which is more than can be said for Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook’s Oldboy). That said, at the end of 2012, news stories broke that Chan-wook was committed to two new projects, The Brigands of Rattelborg and Corsica 72. While it was expected that the latter title would lense first, we’ve heard zilch on either, but we’re hoping that something has gone on behind the scenes, especially considering this was penned by the writers of Skyfall.

Restoration of London’s Regent Street Cinema receives greenlight.
The restoration of the UK’s first cinema, on London’s Regent Street, has been given the go ahead by Westminster City Council, as the campaign to raise funds for the landmark project moves into its next phase.
The Regent Street Cinema, currently used as a lecture theatre within the University of Westminster, is known as the ‘Birthplace of British Cinema’ as it was used by pioneering filmmakers, the Lumière brothers, to perform their first ever moving picture show in the UK on Feb 21, 1896.
The project will see the preservation of the key architectural features of the cinema from its 1920’s heyday, combining the restored fabric with up-to-date technology. Once completed, the venue will house a 200-seat auditorium that will be open to the public.

After the stampede at Toronto to land domestic rights to John Carney‘s Can A Song Save Your Life?, here’s a Berlin title worth paying attention to. FilmNation Entertainment has been selected to sell international rights to Carney’s next film, which will begin production this summer in Dublin. Called Sing Street, the pic is autobiographical in tone, and Carney’s fellow Irishman pals U2′s Bono and The Edge will take part in the film’s music and in the film itself. The latter might mean some screen time, and it is a safe bet to say that after Can A Song Save Your Life?, that Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine will have a movie career if he wants one. Pic is a co-production with Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman and Carney’s Distressed Films, in partnership with PalmStar’s Kevin Frakes and Merced Media Partners’ Raj Brinder Singh in the U.

Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen. This past month Wamg attended the Saving Mr. Banks press conference where Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell, Jason Schwartzman, Bj Novak, Bradley Whitford, director John Lee Hancock, writer Kelly Marcel and producer Alison Owen discussed making the film, Nanny McFee, and scarring grandchildren with Winnie the Pooh.
When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine.

But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

It was all A-listers at the European premiere of Saving Mr. Banks during the Closing Night of the 57th BFI London Film Festival. The cast and crew walked the red carpet and met with fans at the Odeon Leicester Square on Sunday evening (October 20) in London, England.
The early reviews have been overwhelmingly positive with heaps of praise going out to actress Emma Thompson.
Matt Mueller (IndieWire) “As for Thompson, Travers is the actress’s best leading film role since Elinor Dashwood in “Sense And Sensibility,” 18 years ago, and she makes the Australian-born British transplant a curmudgeonly delight.”
Guy Lodge (HitFix) “Thompson’s cunning performance revels in Travers’ withering contempt for all enablers and opponents alike, like a fussier Transatlantic take on Miranda Priestley.”
Scott Foundas (Variety) “Superb”
The film will have its North American premiere as the opening night film at the 2013Afi Fest on November 7.
Co-writer; Kelly Marcel.
