The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.
The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.

The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.
CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.
It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

CBS has picked up to series three of its four pilots, handing out formal orders to the Kathy Bates-led Matlock reboot, The Good Fight spinoff Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston, and the father-son comedy starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. that is now titled Poppa’s House.
Matlock, Elsbeth and Poppa’s House are the first scripted series orders at CBS for new entertainment president Amy Reisenbach. The former head of current programming replaced Kelly Kahl atop the network last year. Her tenure at the network goes back to 2005, when she was a manager in the current programming department, meaning her fingerprints are already all over CBS’ current schedule.
CBS, like other broadcast networks, drastically reduced the volume of pilot orders this year. The network developed only two dramas (Elsbeth and Matlock) and a pair of comedies (Jumpstart, House). All four are fully owned by CBS Studios as networks...

It’s time to start saying goodbye to the women and men of “The Good Fight,” and they appear to be going out with lots of wine, some virtual sexy talk, and a hefty dose of déjà vu.
Paramount+ dropped the trailer for the sixth and final season of the series on Wednesday morning, a little over a month ahead of its Thursday, Sept. 8 premiere.
The new season, which spans 10 episodes, will see Diane Lockhart feeling like she’s going crazy, and struggling with that déjà vu over the overturning of Roe v. Wade, threats to voting rights, and the return of Cold War aggressions. Meanwhile, per the streamer, the lawyers of Reddick & Associates wonder if the violence that they see all around them points to an impending civil war.
Christine Baranski stars in the show alongside John Slattery, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman, Nyambi Nyambi and Charmaine Bingwa, with Audra McDonald and Andre Braugher.

The upcoming season of “The Good Fight” will be its last. Showrunners Robert and Michelle King will bring a 13-year journey with Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart to a close when Season 6 premieres Sept. 8 on Paramount+.
For the Kings, the decision to call it a wrap with a final 10-episode season is a matter of not wanting to “overstay your welcome,” as Robert King told Variety. The husband-and-wife showrunner duo want to take “Good Fight” out on a high note. The series debuted in February 2017 as a spinoff of the Emmy-winning CBS legal drama “The Good Wife,” which ran from 2009-2016.
“We felt we could end the show with a pretty big bang,” Robert King said. “That’s better than getting to the season where we’re struggling to find plot. We thought the sixth season could get us off the stage pretty grandly.”

Original The Good Fight cast members Cush Jumbo and Delroy Lindo, who announced last year that they would not return for Season 5 of the Paramount+ legal drama, will return as guest stars in the season premiere to wrap up their characters’ storylines, Deadline has confirmed.
The fourth season was cut short by three episodes due to the Covid-19 production shutdown, preventing closure on the storylines for both characters.

Exclusive: The Good Fight is getting a high-profile new cast addition for Season 5. Emmy and Tony winner Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) is joining the praised Paramount+ drama series as a series regular with a one-year deal.
Patinkin will play Hal Wackner, a layman with no legal training who spontaneously decides to open a court in the back of a copy shop. Against all odds, the court catches on, and the team at Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart find themselves contending with judgements that mean nothing legally, but are honored by much of the entertained public.
This marks Patinkin’s return to television following his eight-season run as CIA vet Saul Berenson on Showtime’s Homeland, which landed him a Golden Globe nomination and four out of his seven Emmy nominations. Patinkin won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Dr. Jeffrey Geiger on CBS’ Chicago Hope.

New Works Provincetown has commissioned its second and third projects. The developmental theater lab will help support a new play by Kevin Powell (“The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood”), developed with and directed by Oliver Butler (“What the Constitution Means to Me”). It has also commissioned a new musical, “Maiden Voyage,” from composer Carmel Dean (“Renascence”) and lyricist/playwright Mindi Dickstein.
“Maiden Voyage” is inspired by the true story of the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, in which the first ever all-female sailing team battled sexism to complete a grueling endurance test. This story was also chronicled in the recent, acclaimed documentary “Maiden.”

“The Good Fight” still has some punches left to throw.
CBS All Access has renewed the drama for season 5, while also conceding that the current season will have to be curtailed to only seven episodes due to the coronavirus production shutdown. The seventh, and now final episode of season 4 will debut on the service May 28.
Season 4 was originally slated to last 10 episodes, but the abrupt pandemic-related halt in mid-March has forced showrunners Robert and Michelle King to re-think their plans.
“It’s been weird to not be able to finish the fourth season,” said the Kings. “It left the story in even more absurd a place than usual. So we’re thrilled that CBS All Access wants to bring ‘The Good Fight’ back for an additional season, and we know what story we’re planning to tell. It’s like getting the answers to the Sat ahead of time.”

CBS All Access shared the first trailer for the fourth season of “The Good Fight” on Monday, and Diane Lockhart is ready to get back to work.
The trailer sees Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious “Memo 618,” which, as Diane explains, “seems to allow rich and powerful people not to comply with judicial rulings.”
Here’s CBS All Access’s description of the new season:
Season four of “The Good Fight” finds Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart navigating a very different landscape. After they lost their biggest client, Chumhum, and their founding partner’s name was tarnished, Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart was forced to accept an offer by a huge multi-national law firm, Str Laurie, to become a small subsidiary. Suddenly, all of their decisions can be second-guessed by the giant firm that is literally on top of them. While Str Laurie initially seem like benevolent overlords,...

One of the best drama series on television that you’re probably not watching returns for a fourth season on April 9, 2020. Yes, Season 4 of “The Good Fight” debuts on streamer CBS All Access in less than two weeks, with a doozy of an episode that sees Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) living in an alternate reality where Donald Trump was never elected, and Hillary Clinton is the current president of the United States. It’s maybe one of the finest hours of television you will see this year. Ahead of that premiere, CBS has released a trailer for the upcoming season, which you can check out below.
The so-called #Resistance went crazy in “The Good Fight’s” third season, as Diane Lockhart tried to figure out whether you can resist a crazy administration without going crazy yourself, while Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo) and Liz Reddick-Lawrence (Audra McDonald) struggled with a new...

Hanukkah will be part of A Christmas Story Live!, Fox’s upcoming live musical event.
“They’ve written a really fun Hanukkah number. The music is fantastic,” Ana Gasteyer told Et at the Double Standards concert in New York City on Sunday benefiting women's rights, health and empowerment. “Even though A Christmas Story is clearly a Christmas story -- it’s fun to have a Hanukkah song join the ranks of the Christmas songs in the musical. I think everybody felt like it can really be a holiday experience.”
The Saturday Night Live alum will play Mrs. Schwartz in the production, inspired by the 1983 holiday classic feature film A Christmas Story and Ben Pasek and Justin Paul’s 2012 Broadway adaptation. It follows the exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker, who spends most of his time dodging a bully and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift: a "red Ryder air rifle."
