Needless to say, Masters of the Universe isn't exactly high art. The long-defunct Mattel franchise -- which began as a toy line first before being spun off into a popular Saturday morning cartoon series in the 1980s -- was a silly diversion for the under-10 set that was perfectly suited to being served up with heavy doses of sugary breakfast cereal. And yet so was Transformers, which didn't keep it from being turned into a multi-billion-dollar live-action film franchise that cut across demographic barriers. Still, it hasn't been quite so easy for He-Man -- Masters' blond-locked, impossibly-muscled central hero -- on the big screen. The first effort at a live-action film, 1987's Masters of the Universe, was beset by numerous production problems, a lead actor who could barely deliver dialogue, and ridiculous contractual stipulations from Mattel that inadvertently led to charges of Star Wars copycatism. While it certainly had its charms,...

The 1942 comedy The Major and the Minor is notable today as the Hollywood directing debut of Billy Wilder, who wrote the film with his longtime partner Charles Brackett. They would go on to make such classics as The Lost Weekend and Sunset Blvd., but in 1942 Wilder’s name wasn’t a selling point: it was all about Ginger and, to a lesser degree, leading man Ray Milland. In its first-run engagement at the two Paramount Theatres in L.A., the downtown branch added a second feature from B-movie specialists William Pine and William Thomas (known as the Two Dollar Bills), while both venues featured—and advertised—the latest of Paramount’s Superman cartoons, a testament to the appeal of...

Because I can’t find a decent way to display the series of photos, you’ll just have to go look at the perfect joy that is John Barrowman building an adult Big Wheel, then riding said Big Wheel. His life is so much more fun than mine.
Coming down from that high, the Family Research Council says that marriage equality threatens the wellbeing of countless families. The whole thing is worth a read, but I liked this passage best. “Consensual homosexual unions might cause no apparent distress to persons proximate to them, but they diminish an institution – marriage – without which, civilization will erode ever more quickly. And in case one hasn’t noticed, natural marriage in the United States is in enough trouble as it is.” Sounds like a personal problem to me.

The perfection of a rose-tinted past, Doris Day’s costumes in Pillow Talk (1959) are some of the most exquisite ever worn on screen. They personify her immaculate character and symbolise the remnants of a dying era; opulence, optimism and the changing face of urbanised fashion.
Costume designer for Pillow Talk was Bill Thomas, although, as became standard with Doris Day pictures, he was not directly responsible for creating her outfits. That job fell to celebrated costume/fashion designer Jean Louis, earning him a ‘Gowns By’ credit on the film. Louis was known for his stylish and often deceptively simple garments, including most famously Rita Hayworth’s strapless black sheath in Gilda (1946). He even created Marilyn Monroe’s sheer ‘President’s dress’, immortalised at John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday celebration in 1962.

Imitation of Life
Directed by Douglas Sirk
1959, USA
Costume Designer: Bill Thomas
Sirk’s legacy of aesthetic influence has become increasingly apparent in the last few years as being chief influences for films like Far From Heaven and television series like Mad Men. The popularity of the latter series in particular has inspired a revival in fashion from the early 1960s. Choosing just one Sirk film to represent fashion is a struggle and his affinity for symbolic scene dressing often means that costumes are not just functional but carry implications and ideas relating to character personality or ideology in his films.
Imitation of Life is probably the most interesting film in this regard, and the diversity in ages, social backgrounds and class status makes for an extremely diverse fashion landscape. Though for most of the film, Lana Turner’s excessive and posh style seems unattainable, her paired down outfit in...

On last night's Criminal Minds, an autistic boy named Sammy Sparks was the only witness to the violent abduction of his parents, sending the Bau to Louisiana to help out.
In addition to Reid forging his connection with the boy, "Coda" was notable for an interesting, non-preachy social commentary on autism and the oil spill aftermath.
As the UnSub drags Billy's mom to banks and check cashing places to stockpile whatever money he can, a terrified, trapped Billy can only communicate through a piano.
What is the motivation psychosis - or economic desperation?
The team discerns that the UnSub is after a certain amount of money, as if he is about to lose property. Fishermen and child custody case participants emerge as profiles.
Reid is hoping Sammy will help them find his parents, but Lizzie, his legal guardian, may stand in the way. But Reid ultimately has a breakthrough with the young boy.

The short film Yellow Plastic Raygun directed by Alessandro Cima, which was featured on Bad Lit just a few weeks ago, has won the Best Experimental film award at the Downtown Film Fest Los Angeles that ran Sept. 8-12.
I believe this was the second year for the festival, which was created by the former organizers of the defunct Silver Lake Film Festival in an effort to help promote the formerly neglected, but now popular downtown neighborhood of L.A.
Yellow Plastic Raygun is a mix of found and original footage that creates a retro-futuristic tale of society crumbling. The film also ends with creative shots of the World Trade Center that Cima filmed himself several years ago prior to 9/11. You can watch the film on Bad Lit here.
Another winner of the Dffla include the Matt Harlock and Bill Thomas’ documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story, which also screened Australia twice recently,...

Semantics aside, Steve Carell is in danger of becoming that funny guy who always appears in the really unfunny movies
The basics
As the price of career advancement, ambitious financial executive Tim (Paul Rudd) is invited to attend a "dinner for schmucks", an annual event at which various eccentric guests unwittingly compete for the title of biggest bozo. All Tim has to do is find the right clown for the job, and Fate seems to have dealt him the perfect hand when he literally runs into Barry (Steve Carell) a geeky IRS employee whose hobbies include dressing toy mice as famous historical figures. Unfortunately, Barry seems to have a destructive effect on the lives of anyone in his immediate proximity, and Tim soon finds himself without a girlfriend and in danger of destroying any chance he ever had of attaining promotion.
The stakes

Did Guy Ritchie's retooled, shirtless Sherlock set your pulse racing or did he have you in stitches instead?
Guy Ritchie's take on Conan Doyle's classic English sleuth is not without its problems: his protagonist does not quite fit the action hero mould into which the much-maligned film-maker has squeezed him, and those who find Ritchie's more laddish tendencies distasteful may be dismayed by the movie's predilection for extreme violence. Nevertheless, the critics have just about bought Sherlock Holmes as an intermittently entertaining romp through a stylised Victorian London, thanks mainly to a barnstorming performance by Robert Downey Jr in the title role and its Dan Brown-lite storyline.
This Holmes is up against the villainous Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), an apparently immortal pseudo-fascist necromancer who plans to lead England on a mission to reconquer America and eventually the world – presumably a heinous plan cooked up to speed...

The best science fiction takes modern perspectives on culture and society and forces us to see them in a new light by casting them in an alternate form. In the case of 1976’s futuristic epic Logan’s Run, directed by Michael Anderson and starring Brit film icon Michael York and Americana dream girl Farrah Fawcett (who receives some top billing despite having a relatively minor role), basic attitudes towards age, religions and the advancement of civilization come under fire through a variety of well-crafted devices and metaphors. Further anchoring Logan’s Run in the echelon’s of great sci-fi are stellar performances and what were once considered cutting edge special effects – all of it remastered for a Blu-ray release.
In the year 2274, the society of Logan’s Run exists in a state of hedonistic perfection: everyone lives out of the range of nature’s harsh influences within domes where all...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth wants to grant royal status to an English town. The monarch has written to naval officer Bill Thomas to say she has taken "careful note" of his request for Wooton Bassett to be granted a 'Royal' prefix in honour of its support for war victims. Elizabeth vowed to ask Prime Minister Gordon Brown to "consider" the name change, as she is unable to grant 'royal' status without discussion with the government. Her letter read: "Her Majesty has taken careful note of your comments requesting official recognition for the village of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, in honour of the respect accorded to every fallen soldier, killed during their tour of duty in Afghanistan or Iraq when their funeral...

Retired naval officer Bill Thomas has written to the monarch to suggest Wiltshire's Wootton Bassett has its name changed to honour the town's tradition of paying respect to soldiers killed in action.
