Veteran Los Angeles news anchor Jeff Michael sued Kcbs-tv on Friday, alleging the station breached his contract and discriminated against him based on health issues.
Michael was co-anchor of Kcbs-tv Channel 2’s newscasts at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. for more than three years. The Emmy Award-winning anchor joined Kcbs in early 2017 after nearly two decades of working as an anchor at Fox’s Kttv Channel 11. Before that, he was a crime reporter for Kabc-tv Channel 7.
Michael was part of a May purge by the station, a company-wide cutback after the ViacomCBS merger that saw him dismissed along with anchors Sandra Mitchell and Sharon Tay and meteorologist Garth Kemp. Kcbs said at the time that the staff cuts were caused by the pandemic and by “the ongoing and transformative changes in the media industry,” according to a statement.

Jeff Michael, a veteran local news anchor in Los Angeles, filed a lawsuit on Friday alleging that Kcbs-tv breached his agreement and discriminated against him based on his heart and stress issues.
Michael was let go in May, along with anchors Sandra Mitchell and Sharon Tay and meteorologist Garth Kemp, as part of a broader newsroom layoff. ViacomCBS has engaged in several rounds of cutbacks at various divisions in the wake of its merger.
In a statement, Kcbs said the staff cuts were caused by the pandemic and by “the ongoing and transformative changes in the media industry.”
“These were difficult decisions to make and we understand Jeff Michael’s disappointment over the elimination of his position,” the station said. “That said, we firmly believe his claims are entirely without merit and we are prepared to defend against these accusations.”

CBSViacom’s layoffs this week also impacted CBS News and CBS-owned affiliates, the latest fallout to hit news media amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The layoffs were said to make up a single digit percentage of the news division — reportedly 5%, or around 75 employees. They follow recent staff cuts at outlets such as The Atlantic, BuzzFeed and Vox Media.
CBS News president Susan Zirinsky wrote in a memo on Wednesday that “no one could have foreseen the economic fallout from the pandemic coming on top of the cost savings initiatives already underway from the merger of CBS and Viacom. As a result, we have scrutinized our entire business model, our budgets, and what we learned in news gathering during the last months. We are not alone; media companies and businesses all over the country are re-organizing and developing new operating models.”

Stu Mundel, perhaps the most well-known of L.A.’s TV helicopter reporters — specifically for his frequent coverage of police car chases and brush fires across Southern California — is boarding a new chopper. Mundel has exited his longtime perch at the CBS-owned Kcbs/Kcal duopoly for a new gig at crosstown rival Kttv “Fox 11.”
Kcbs/Kcal confirmed the departure, and Fox 11 plans to make a larger announcement when he officially starts in June. Kttv VP/news director Erica Hill-Rodriguez announced the hire in a memo to staff:
“Stu Mundel will be joining Fox 11 as an aerial breaking news reporter, bringing us the important information on brushfires, pursuits, dramatic rescues, and all breaking news,” she wrote. “As many of you already know, Stu has been an iconic voice in our market, reporting breaking news from the air for the last eight years for Kcbs/Kcal. First time director Dan Gilroy has started strong with his debut film Nightcrawler. This sadistic character study is darkly twisted in the best ways. It is a manifestation of the alluring but devastating car crash our minds simply cannot turn away from. Nightcrawler tantalizes that part of humanity that is fascinated with carnage and bloodshed. It will allure you with its thrills and fascinate you with its eccentric behavior.
Nightcrawler works best when it is solely focused on the character of Lou Bloom played ever so brilliantly by Jake Gyllenhaal. Bloom is an oddity of a man. Unemployed he makes a living by finding random jobs like selling stolen metal to Los Angles scrapyards. Our first encounter with Lou...

Chicago – “No one talks like that,” I kept thinking to myself about this noir thriller. But that said, “Nightcrawler” is driven by just about the most entertaining dialogue from one person I’ve seen all year.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Despite the fact that he’s living in a warped alternate version of the reality you and I know, you can’t stop listening to the way a narcissistic, zombie-like Jake Gyllenhaal puts people in their place. You know immediately that this typically 180-pound man – who shed 20 pounds to become the gaunt Lou Bloom and is hungry both literally and figuratively – is more than an odd bird. He clearly exhibits sociopathic behavior and that side of him is certainly disturbing, but there’s another side I actually find refreshing.
He doesn’t sugar coat because he doesn’t know how to. He speaks so decisively and matter-of-factly. His words are the epitome of being blunt,...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo star in ‘Nightcrawler,’ about an unscrupulous videographer trolling the streets of Los Angeles for bloody crime-scene footage he can sell to a local TV news operation. It also stars Bill Paxton, James Huang and a raft of current and former Los Angeles TV news anchors and reporters, including Kent Shocknek, Pat Harvey and Sharon Tay.
Watch my video review above for more about the film, but know that I think it features Gyllenhaal’s best performance maybe ever, and a fine one by Russo as well.
The film is written and directed by Dan Gilroy, and produced by Gyllenhaal, Tony Gilroy, Jennifer Fox, David Lancaster and Michael Litvak. Open Road Films is handling distribution in the U.S. Yes, the project is a family affair, featuring work by brothers Dan, Tony (The Bourne Legacy, Michael Clayton) and editor John (Pacific Rim, Warrior) Gilroy.

Kcal 9‘s weeknight anchor crew will be setting their alarm clocks a lot earlier. Sharon Tay, Rick Garcia and meteorologist Evelyn Taft are moving from Kcal’s weeknight 8 and 10 Pm newscasts to sister station CBS 2 for early morning duty. They’ll anchor the weekday 4:30 to 7 Am and 11- to 11:30 Am newscasts beginning November 18. They’re trading with current CBS 2 morning anchors Kent Shocknek and Suzie Suh and meteorologist Rich Fields who will move to the 8 and 10 Pm slot, also beginning on November 18. Sylvia Lopez and Leyna Nguyen will continue to anchor Kcal’s weeknight 9 Pm newscast. The moves were announced today by Steve Mauldin, President and General Manager, CBS 2 and Kcal 9. The trio of Tay, Garcia and Taft have proved to be a ratings success for Kcal 9 since they began working together in August 2010. L.A.-based duopoly Kcbs-tv and Kcal-tv have shuffled the news anchors for their weeknight newscasts.
Pat Harvey, a 20-year Kcal veteran who was one of the original anchors of the station's primetime news, is switching to Kcbs to co-anchor the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Paul Magers, who has held that role since 2004 with Laura Diaz.
Diaz, meanwhile, is getting bumped to Kcbs' 6 p.m. newscast as that program's sole anchor. Diaz will also take on the extra responsibility of hosting and playing a role in the creation of a series of local news and public affairs specials.
Kcal weathercaster Jackie Johnson will succeed Johnny Mountain as Kcbs weeknight weathercaster. Mountain, a five-year Kcbs veteran whose career spans 32 years on Los Angeles television, announced his retirement last month. Josh Rubenstein, the weekday meteorologist for Kcbs and Kcal, will provide Kcal's weeknight weather reports until a successor for Johnson is named.
