Director John Sturges’ final feature is a handsome production that fumbles and stumbles in unexpected ways. Michael Caine and especially Donald Sutherland lead an impossible commando mission to kidnap Winston Churchill right from English soil. Tom Mankiewicz’s dialogue is witty but the tone is all over the place. We don’t know whether it’s the script, the direction or the editing that muffs so many potential bravura moments. On the other hand, every scene with Sutherland and Jenny Agutter is gold. [Imprint] gives us both a theatrical cut and a more satisfying extended cut.

Given that for most people reading this website, Christmas brings with it the coldest and most treacherous of outdoor experiences, it’s little wonder that cinema plays such a big part of the holiday season. Families gathering in their warmly lit living rooms next to the tree and watching classic films of heartwarming sentiment or epic scale is as much a part of common tradition as gift opening or alcohol fuelled social faux pas. While for the Us the classic is It’s a Wonderful Life and over here in the rocky United Kingdom it’s The Great Escape, we all have our quintessential Xmas movie looping every year at the same time ad nauseam. ‘Tis the season for such folly, after all.

Playing computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, Noomi Rapace embodies the character in such a exhaustive way that picturing anyone else in the role was, until recently, impossible. Defined by copious piercings, a ragged biker leather jacket and skinny jeans, Lisbeth is a blatant symbol of unconformity. From author Stieg Larsson’s creation to costume designer Cilla Rörby’s interpretation for the screen, Lisbeth harks back to the mid-1970s; the early days of punk and a desire to skew superficial expectations.
Lisbeth’s costume changes for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009, directed by Niels Arden Oplev) are faithful, certainly in spirit, to Larsson’s Millennium novels. The overall shock factor has been toned down somewhat, likely because Rörby did not want Lisbeth to appear distractingly outrageous.

This is the Pure Movies review for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo starring Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Lena Endre, Peter Haber, Sven-Bertil Taube, Peter Andersson, Ingvar Hirdwall. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev. Adapting any novel is a challenge; faithful readers can be very demanding, wanting films to live up to their high expectations. When it comes to putting such a hyped up and critically acclaimed novel on to the big screen, the task is that much harder. Larsson’s debut novel is dark, twisting and impossible to put down. And while the Swedish makers of this film have done an excellent job of evoking the bleak atmosphere of the book, the awkward chopping of the plot failed to hold me in quite such thrall. Despite this I think they met this ambitious project with equanimity and overall have a successful film on their hands.

Chicago – With “The Girl Who Played With Fire” currently selling tickets in theaters (check out our review here) and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” selling millions of copies all season long, the trifecta of summer thrills can only be complete with a look at the Blu-ray release of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” It’s a “Girl” Summer.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is not your typical mystery/thriller. The original title in its home country translates more directly as “Men Who Hate Women” and the film contains a disturbing look at a culture based on misogyny. This is tough stuff that mostly works even if some critics have gone remarkably overboard in comparing it to “The Silence of the Lambs” or “Se7en.” It’s nowhere near as accomplished as those films but it’s definitely worth a rental — even if just to...

Grab ‘Em Right Away
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Directed by: Niels Arden Oplev
Written by: Nikolaj Arcel & Rasmus Heisterberg
Starring: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace & Sven-Bertil Taube
Why you should buy this? Because it not only gives you a brilliant story but also hope that the remake to come (to be directed by David Fincher) will probably be amazing. There are few mystery thrillers that actually ‘thrill’ me as it plot unfolds in front of me. Even though the film alludes to certain mental issues in the Lisbeth character (Rapace, shown above), it never exploits said conflicts as plot contrivances, which I like a lot. In your garden-variety Hollywood film with a $100M+ budget a lot of broad character representations are to be expected. Here they’re non-existent. A lot...

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Directed by: Niels Arden Oplev Written by: Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg (screenplay), Stieg Larsson (novel) Starring: Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Sven-Bertil Taube, Peter Haber Over the past year it seems like everyone has been talking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and apparently I'm one of the last people on the planet to find out who this girl is and, more importantly, where that tattoo is located. The only thing I really knew about this movie is that it was based on a popular Swedish novel and that David Fincher was attached to direct an English language remake. That was enough to get me interested, but the the fact that it is the first in a series of books all called "The Girl Who..." made me think that it might be another teen series in the vein of Twilight or Harry Potter.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (*** out of 4)
Editor’s note: Music Box Films continues to expand this movie after limited, successful theatrical runs in New York and Los Angeles
It’s difficult watching Niels Arden Opley’s original “Dragon,” an adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling crime novel, without thinking ahead to the already announced American remake. Will Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan of “An Education” win the coveted, cultish role of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander? How will she approach the part, which would require her to endure extremely harsh physical and psychological challenges? And who should they cast alongside her as Mikael Blomkvist, a sullied journalist caught up in a web of intrigue?
Such distractions only last so long, for Opley’s film — or, more specifically, Larsson’s lurid and twisty mystery — quickly pulls you into a 40-year-old cold case, a desperate search for a...

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as is often the case with imported foreign works, is best understood through the lens of its original title: Män som hatar kvinnor, or "Men who hate women." Based on the first novel in Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy, the Swedish film is an engrossing look at the allure of obsession, but it's also a brutal, uncompromising experience meant to vividly explore the depths to which some men go to own and ultimately destroy women. There are scenes of sexual violence as uncomfortable as anything you will see in mainstream cinema, and I would be lying to say that I did anything other than suffer through them. But there's a point to such suffering, even at a fictional remove, and director Niels Arden Oplev knows it. Those dark moments aren't designed to engender pity for the women in question, or to shock the viewer,...

When the PR rep for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo told me not to offer my senior students passes to see the film, my curiosity piqued. Now that I have seen the Swedish (subtitled) mystery thriller, I understand completely. The film will mostly likely garner a Nc-17 rating because of some graphic sex scenes and disturbing subject matter. As a huge fan of mysteries, the story intrigued me overall, even though some aspects are predictable, but I'm inclined to admit I found some scenes tough to watch.

English language version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is coming!
And this U.S. remake of the hit 2009 Swedish film will be directed by the man we all remember from movies like Se7en or Fight Club or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button… Yes, we’re talking about David Fincher!
If you had a chance to watch this Swedish film, then you definitely know it is a very heavy movie, an epic tale of serial murder and corporate trickery spanning several continents.
This is an award-winning crime novel by the late Swedish author and journalist Stieg Larsson, and the first in his Millennium Trilogy.
For those who aren’t so familiar with the whole project, we’re going to remind you what the basic story is actually about: “16-year old Harriet Vanger disappeared without a trace, on September 29th 1966. Nearly forty years later, a journalist gets contacted by...

Chicago – Literary mysteries are harder to adapt for the big screen than one might assume. The trick is to make audiences feel like they’re discovering secrets right alongside the characters. We want to share in their exhilaration, their terror, their epiphanies.
We don’t want wordy explanations, which are the only “thrills” offered from Ron Howard’s botched “Da Vinci Code” films. We want an out-of-body experience, which is exactly what a film like Guillaume Canet’s “Tell No One” delivers. Canet adapted Harlan Coben’s novel in a way that allowed viewers to follow in the footsteps of his protagonist as he uncovered one stunning secret after another. It was a commercial triumph at art houses across America, and now “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” seems to be aiming for a similar success. And while it is no “Tell No One,” it is certainly no “Da Vinci Code” either.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. Niels Arden Oplev's adaptation of the Stieg Larsson bestseller, the first in the Millennium trilogy, also nabbed a best actress nom for star Noomi Rapace, best supporting actor for Sven-Bertil Taube and best cinematography for Peter Mokrosinski. In an odd twist, the second film in the trilogy, "The Girl Who Played With Fire," also picked up a nomination, for famed cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema, who lensed Swedish vampire hit "Let the Right One In."
"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is already the most successful Swedish film of all time, with worldwide boxoffice revenues of more than $100 million. Sony Pictures Entertainment is planning an English-language adaptation of the Millennium series, which Scott Rudin is attached to produce, along with Swedish producers Ole Sondberg and Soren Staermose.
