In 2015, there may not be a voice more precious to the music industry than Adele's. “This is an artist who comes around once every generation,” iHeartMedia president John Sykes recently told Bloomberg of this growing anomaly. “Etta James, Barbra Streisand, Adele: Three artists who shattered records in their own time and didn’t look or sound like anyone else in their time.” In just over three days, Adele has sold 2,433,000 copies of her third album, 25, breaking ’N Sync’s 15-year-old record of 2,416,000 albums in one week. She could sell closer to 3 million by the time the Billboard 200 album chart turns over this weekend. Adele has referred to what happened to her career post-21 as a “phenomenon,” a magnitude of success she can’t conceive of replicating in her lifetime — and something few others ever have or will. She’s there in good company alongside the likes of Streisand, Whitney...

The concert documentary 12/12/12 does a great job of situating the event within a larger context. A show intended to benefit those afflicted by Hurricane Sandy, this was modeled after the 9/11 concert that was in part organized by Hollywood honcho Harvey Weinstein. Combined with the heads of Clear Channel (John Sykes) and Madison Square Garden (Jim Dolan), these three producers and their team pulled off a massive show on very short notice. Directors Amir bar Lev and Charlie Lighting, together with their editors, manage something really quite extraordinary, doing a fabulous job of making it feel like a real-time unfolding of the show. Cutting between the stage, backstage, and in various locations such as local bars, as audience members we're made to feel a...

What surprising song did Paul McCartney perform backstage? The answer is in this behind-the-scenes doc.
On December 12, 2012, mega-producer Harvey Weinstein, James Dolan, executive chairman of the Madison Square Garden Company, and John Sykes, the co-founder of MTV and current president of Clear Channel Communications, joined forces to organize a benefit concert for the victims of Super Storm Sandy. Every favor appeared to have been cashed in. On top of the all-star musical line-up -- everyone from Kanye West to Pink Floyd to Coldplay's Chris Martin -- attendees included Chris Rock, Jesse Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Blake Lively, Jon Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Whoopi Goldberg and Tony Danza. A frenzy of celebrity faces, most of them manning phones for the concert's call-in donations.

Paul has a new baby, Ringo's a grandpa to an 18-year-old, and the Beatles are back with a new album, "Let It Be ... Naked". It may be more than 30 years since the Fab Four broke up, but Viacom Inc.'s Infinity Broadcasting unit is counting on a radio special airing Thursday tied to the release of the remastered album to provide exclusive content for their stations across the country and draw in listeners. "We're bringing big-event programming back to radio," Infinity chairman and CEO John Sykes said in an interview. "Radio in the '50s, '60s and, to some extent, the '70s was built on big events." Sykes is likely also hoping to bring Infinity back to the path of healthy financial growth with relatively inexpensive programming, industry observers said.

Two weeks after his predecessor abruptly resigned, Joel Hollander was named president and operations chief of Infinity Broadcasting, putting him in charge of the 183 radio stations owned by the struggling Viacom subsidiary. Hollander most recently was president and chief executive officer of Westwood One, a radio programming group managed by Infinity. His move opened the way for Shane Coppola to return to Westwood One as its president and CEO just a year after he left to become managing partner at Columbus Capital Partners Llc. The executive shuffle follows the resignation of then-Infinity president and chief operating officer John Fullam, who was subjected to sharp criticism by Viacom president Mel Karmazin for the division's poor first-quarter performance, including an inability to aggressively grow advertising revenue. Infinity chairman and CEO John Sykes has not been affected by the shake-up.

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will take to the airwaves of Infinity Broadcasting for a town hall interview Thursday, just days after the radio group started simulcasting Late Show With David Letterman from sister Viacom unit CBS. Quite an odd mix of characters, but it's part of a common strategy by new Infinity chairman and chief executive John Sykes. By infusing Infinity with marquee programming, Sykes hopes to make the radio network a more efficient and attractive advertising platform while boosting the stature of its stations in their respective markets. "Up until now, we really haven't joined these stations together to do event programming," said Sykes, who took the top job at Infinity in March as part of a management overhaul. "This allows us to offer listeners, advertisers and movie studios an opportunity to see our group as a network of stations that reach listeners coast to coast."...
