ReviewIt is lovely to see Arvind Swamy back in Malayalam after 26 years, but the making of the film doesn’t let you forget it is a movie, filled with artificial dialogues and jarring background music.CrisThe first time Kichu meets him, David is behind a food counter of a movie theatre, selling popcorn. Simply by being Malayalis meeting in Mumbai, they become quick friends, Kichu calling the older man ‘Anna’ – a term for big brother. It is apparently a scheme, in which Kichu is expected to make David talk and reveal things from his past. David is a man who has lost his memory and Kichu has to help revive it. All of it sounds like an interesting premise to set a film in. Especially, when David is built up as a dangerous man now assuming the role of a quiet simpleton. With a two-line intro like that, you’d...

On what was discussed during this meet, we hear that the major issue was to reduce the production costs. Some of the ideas mooted to reduce production costs include pay cut for actors, lowering caravan usage wherever possible, assistant directors, make up artistes, costume designers to be paid as per Fefsi standards, computerization of ticket sales, etc. It was also decided that event organizers roping in artistes for events should be making a donation to the Nadigar Sangam before doing so. The meeting was well attended with top stars in Kollywood including Simbu, Bharath, Suhasini Manirathnam, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Karthi, Arvind Swamy, Arya etc., gracing it. Actor Simbu , who campaigned against Vishal's team Pandavar Ani during the elections attended the meeting for the first time. Vishal warmly welcomed Simbu to the event by hugging him, which came as a pleasant surprise to the other stars. Earlier, the 47-day strike called by the Tamil Film Producers Council was called off following an agreement with the Digital Service Providers. KollywoodThe ‘Nargasooran’ director plans to take up the issue with the Tamil Film Producers Council.Tnm StaffFacebookThe fallout between two directors, Gautham Menon and Karthick Naren, has been garnering a lot of attention lately. The association comes from Karthick’s upcoming film Naragasooran, for which Gautham Menon is the producer. In a series of back and forths, Karthick has now responded to Gautham’s recent letter in an interview with the Hindustan Times. In it, he has said, “It is great that he apologised and I also did the same from my side if what I said was wrong. However, I wouldn’t agree with everything that he has mentioned in the statement. Especially the fact that he did not invest in the project.” This response comes following Gautham’s letter that was published on Facebook yesterday. In an earlier interview to Sify, Karthick Naren had claimed that although Gautham Menon had promised to fund his film, he hadn't invested any money, and allegedly used the title of producer to get funds for his own films Enai Noki Payum Thota and Dhruva Natchithiram which were announced a long time ago and are yet to hit the screens. Gautham defended himself in his letter stating, “We’ve spent a lot on the film through investors for which I’m liable and the business is not big enough to divert funds to another film like Dhruva Natchathiram, which is seven times bigger in size and is produced by someone else. I’ve not asked for 50% share of the profit on Naragasooran and I know I have no share on the film.” However, Karthick has refuted Gautham’s statement in his recent interview and has said, “We are currently calculating how much he has invested in this project and we will release the information soon.” Karthick has also revealed that there is a stay order on Naragasooran’s release from Gautham’s financiers. “This is not something that is mentioned in the statement. But we are also preparing documents to defend ourselves in the court,” he added. On Wednesday, Arvind Swamy, Naragasooran’s lead actor, also came in support of Karthick. Responding to Gautham Menon’s post in which he asked young filmmakers to "grow a pair” instead of just “whining”, Arvind tweeted "Yes we all can grow a few things, a pair of eyes that sees what we do to others, a pair of ears to hear the truth, a conscience to tell us when we are wrong and a pair of whatever to accept our mistakes and apologise...instead we grow our list of commitments that we can't keep.” In his interview to Ht, Karthick has said that the project would've been dropped if not for Arvind Swamy’s help. “Gautham sir has quoted that Arvind Swami was not ready to dub for the film until he was paid, in reality though if it were not for him, this film would have been dropped. He was supposed to be paid an amount before the shoot began, but that did not happen. My entire team was in Ooty preparing for a shoot and he called me to tell me that the payment had not come across. But he said he would come for the shoot and we could figure it out later.” He also added that he was forced to speak out now since his finances have all dried up. Karthick went on to add that it was not fair to “kill 10 lives” on the way to the “temple”. “Right now, the problem is not that we want our film to be released in a couple of weeks. No, it is about the way we were treated and how Gautham sir had abandoned us in the middle of the project,” he was quoted. The director also plans to take this up with Tamil Film Producer’s Council after the strike. It is to be noted that Gautham Menon is the Vice President of Tfpc. Controversy“Karthick’s angst is coming from miscommunication by vested interests and a non-understanding of how the market works," Gautham said.Tnm StaffImage: Digital NativeIn an attempt to address and end the ongoing spat with director Karthick Naren, producer Gautham Vasudev Menon published a letter on his Facebook page. “Just when lots of positive movement was happening on Naragasooran, a tweet from my director Karthick Naren upset me and even though good sense prevailed through most of the day, lots of calls from the media upset me and I tweeted a reply. In retrospect, I feel I shouldn’t have. I apologise to Karthick for that,” the letter reads. Gautham said that the tweet was more of a reaction to the phone calls and unnecessary attention to the film by the media. “Through the production of Naragasooran, I have never interfered or even discussed the script with Karthick and have only insisted with my team and the investors who came on board to give him what he wanted. He was given a free hand. We brought in the actors he wanted at very high costs and even the trailers and teasers and posters were his,” the letter states. “We’ve spent a lot on the film through investors for which I’m liable and the business is not big enough to divert funds to another film like Dhruva Natchathiram, which is seven times bigger in size and is produced by someone else. I’ve not asked for 50% share of the profit on Naragasooran and I know I have no share on the film,” the letter adds. In an earlier interview to Sify, Karthick Naren claimed that although Gautham Menon had promised to fund his film, he hadn't invested any money, and allegedly used the title of producer to get funds for his own films Enai Noki Payum Thota and Dhruva Natchithiram which were announced a long time ago and are yet to hit the screens. Stating that he would happily opt out of the film if Karthick wanted him to leave, Gautham Menon said, “I understand that Karthick’s angst and rant is coming from some miscommunication by vested interests and a non-understanding of how the market works. Nobody can stop the release of a film, and we haven’t made films to be kept on the shelf.” Gautham also said that ‘every other producer goes through this.’ “When a team does good work, there will be somebody trying to bring the team down. That’s all this is. In a few days, all issues will be sorted. And we’ve never held back Karthick from beginning work on his next film. He’s free to do so and he has begun work also,” the letter adds. The letter also mentions actor Arvind Swamy and claims that he refused to dub his part till his entire payment was made, adding, “We will do the needful very soon and then it’s only a release date issue.” Actor Arvind Swami, the lead star in Naragasooran, has come out in support of Karthick Naren. “This misunderstanding has been sorted out between Karthick and me and we are working towards making this film see the light of day or the darkness of a movie hall very soon,” Gautham Menon’s letter concludes.
