Grey’s Anatomy may have a lot in common with long-running hospital shows like ER on the surface. But TV showrunner Shonda Rimes revealed the slight details that made them very different from each other.
‘ER’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ focused on two completely different things Alex Kingston, Paul McCrane, Ming-Na, Michael Michele, Anthony Edwards, Goran Visnjic, Noah Wyle, Maura Tierney, Eriq La Salle, Sherry Stringfield, Laura Innes | NBC/Getty Images
ER and Grey’s Anatomy would inevitably have things in common, with both being successful medical dramas. But the genesis of each show was different. ER was created by Michael Crichton, and was based on his own experiences going to law school. Meanwhile, after watching a TV show, Rhimes was inspired to make Grey’s Anatomy.
Before Rhimes came up with Grey’s, she was actually working on a war series. But current events dissuaded her from going any further with the show.

Sudden success is a hell of a drug. Be it entertainment, sports, or certain, shockingly competitive sectors of the healthcare industry, you can count on numerous fast risers to get high on their own supply and take an ego-fueled torch to their career.
Television actors are especially susceptible to these vain slip-ups, and it's easy to understand why. Before the advent of prestige TV, the small-screen medium was, particularly for young-ish performers, viewed as a potential springboard to big-screen stardom. Sometimes it works out. Chevy Chase bolted from "Saturday Night Live" midway through its second season and instantly became a movie star on the strength of his work in Colin Higgins' sporadically hilarious "Foul Play" (even though he's far from the funniest element of the film). And sometimes you're David Caruso, who quit "NYPD Blue" to topline a pair of 1995 flops in Barbet Schroder's "Kiss of Death" (underrated) and William Friedkin's "Jade".

That noise you hear is the Best Drama Actress Emmy category emptying out this year. Of last year’s six nominees, only one, “Yellowjackets” star Melanie Lynskey, is back in the running. Reigning champ Zendaya (“Euphoria”) and Reese Witherspoon (“The Morning Show”) are missing this cycle, while Laura Linney (“Ozark”) and “Killing Eve” duo Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh competed for the final time for their concluded shows. Assuming Lynskey is safely in — she’s in first in the odds — there are five spots up for grabs. Could she have some company this year from her co-stars Juliette Lewis and Tawny Cypress? If they join Lynskey in the lineup, it’ll mark the first time one show has yielded three nominees in the category in a single year.
Eleven shows have produced two nominees, including “Killing Eve” (Comer and Oh), “Six Feet Under” (Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths), “The Sopranos...

I'm not sure what the current status is on The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthomis' adaptation of the 1964 Western novel Pop. 1280 from author Jim Thompson -- it was announced as his next film all the way back in February but nothing's been said since and it's not on his IMDb page right now -- but now we know what else Yorgos has got in the pipeline, at least.
Yesterday Deadline reported he's turning his formidable talents towards the small screen for a limited series adaptation of David Gilbert's book The Man In The Rockefeller Suit: The Astonishing Rise and Spectacular Fall of a Serial Impostor, which tells the true-life story of "Clark Rockefeller," whose blue-blood lineage became unraveled once his suspicious wife Sandra began pulling at threads.

It’s funny what your mind holds onto over time, and 25 years after helping build “ER” into a bona fide television phenomenon, what director and producer Mimi Leder remembers is the floor.
“My memories of the beginning of ‘ER’ were of the building that set — John [Wells] and I looking at the floor and going, ‘That’s a great floor! Let’s use that!’ And I remember our D.P. going, ‘That’s awful.'”
But Leder pushed forward, laying a foundation for one of television’s most impactful series ever made. No one directed more “ER” episodes over those first two seasons and, as co-executive producer, Leder was entrusted with shaping the series that came after Rod Holcomb’s two-hour pilot — a pilot met with a lot of internal trepidation.
“I did hear all the rumors,” Leder said. “That it was really iffy; that [NBC executives] weren’t sure about...

It is not hyperbolic to say that “ER” was a game-changer when it premiered 25 years ago. And the best part is, no one really saw it coming. CBS’ much-hyped and also Chicago-set “Chicago Hope” was predicted to win the Great Medical Drama War of the 1994-95 season.

331 episodes. 124 Emmy nominations. 49 million viewers. One George Clooney. 25 years ago, ER made its debut on NBC, introducing viewers to the emergency room doctors at County General Hospital in Chicago. The medical drama would launch the careers of George Clooney, Noah Wyle and Julianna Margulies, going on to run for 15 seasons, making it the second longest running medical drama in TV history. When it began in 1994, ER, which also starred Top Gun star Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield and Eriq La Salle, was actually an underdog, with most industry insiders assuming CBS' Chicago Hope would win the battle of the big medical procedural; ER ended up becoming the No. 1 show on TV, almost hitting 50...

“Killing Eve” made a killing with Tuesday’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations with nine total. Two of those are for Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in Best Drama Actress, marking the first time since 2002 that a show produced double nominations in the category.
Oh, who last year became the first nominee of Asian descent in the category, and Comer are up against Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”) and Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”).
The last duo to make the cut were Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths from “Six Feet Under.” They lost to Allison Janney, who upgraded to lead that year after back-to-back wins in supporting for “The West Wing.” For the three years before that, “The Sopranos” co-stars Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco competed against each other in lead, with the former winning twice in 1999 and 2001.

Can “Killing Eve” make a killing in the Best Drama Actress Emmy race? Our early odds have Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer making the cut, which would be the first time in 17 years one show has produced two nominees in the category.
“Six Feet Under” was the last show to do so, with Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths, who lost to Allison Janney (“The West Wing”). For the three years before that, “The Sopranos” stars Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco competed against each other, with the former winning twice.

Twenty-five years ago, audiences were captivated by a most arresting and original spin on a TV staple — the police drama. Steven Bochco, who was already well-known as one of television’s chief innovators and reinventors thanks to high-quality series like “Paris,” “L.A. Law” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.”, co-created “NYPD Blue.” This was his second reinvention of the genre (he was also responsible for “Hill Street Blues”), but in teaming up with David Milch the envelope was pushed even farther.
Not only would “NYPD Blue” pioneer a grittier, more frenetic storytelling style with the use of regularly jerky and very verite handheld camera, it would challenge long-established broadcast network limits regarding violence, nudity and four-letter words. Of course, the road for such a disruptive new approach would not be an easy one, with high drama playing out both among the opposition to the game-changing series and within its own ranks before...

“The Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Bruce Miller was an aspiring writer, living in Los Angeles, when the landmark medical drama “ER” premiered on NBC in 1994. The show’s pilot upended almost everything he had been taught, up until then, about writing a script.
“You never know what’s going to happen, you never know how it’s going to resolve, and you don’t know how long it’s going to last,” he said. “That lesson taught be a lot about ‘Handmaid’s.’ If you lay out the story in the first scene, people are going to be bored. Is “Killing Eve” going to end a 16-year long drought in Best Drama Actress? No show since 2002 has fielded two nominees in the category, but two of our Emmy Experts believe the BBC America drama can break that duck.
Robert Rorke (New York Post) and Glenn Whipp (Los Angeles Times) are predicting nominations for Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in the tough-as-nails category. A five-time nominee for her supporting role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” Oh has risen to sixth place in our odds within the past month on the heels of “Killing Eve’s” escalating buzz and the show’s leading five Television Critics Association Awards nominations. Newcomer Comer trails in ninth place.

“Killing Eve” could make a killing at the Emmys — specifically in Best Drama Actress. The BBC America series has two leading ladies, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, and if they both get shortlisted, the category would feature two co-stars for the first time in 16 years.
The last time a show double-dipped in Best Drama Actress was “Six Feet Under” in 2002, when Frances Conroy and Rachel Griffiths lost to Allison Janney (“The West Wing”). For the three years before that, “The Sopranos” stars Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco faced off, with the former winning twice. The ‘90s had two more co-star pairings in 1997 (“ER”’s Julianna Margulies and Sherry Stringfield) and 1994.
Drama actress co-star nominees occurred with regularity in the ‘80s, thanks to “Cagney & Lacey” (Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless) and “L.A. Law” (Susan Dey and Jill Eikenberry). “Dallas” (Barbara Bel Geddes and Linda Gray), “Hill Street Blues” (Barbara Babcock...

With his feature directorial debut, My Dead Boyfriend, Anthony Edwards is enjoying life behind the camera -- something he appreciated long before becoming known as Goose in Top Gun or Mark Greene on NBC’s long-running medical drama, ER. “It goes all the way back to when I was 16,” he tells Et. “I always loved the technical side of film.”
And having acted for a decade before even joining ER, it was only natural for Edwards to take on the opportunity to direct an episode of the series, “Take These Broken Wings,” in the second season. “ER was a great place for my debut because I had the familiarity of all the crew and everybody,” Edwards says. “I could play and experiment with the ideas that I had of how to visualize it.”
The season’s penultimate episode, which aired on May 9, 1996, was a heavy one, with Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield) consulting a therapist to cope with...

‘The Dog Lover’ Exclusive Clip: An Undercover Animal Rights Activist Struggles To Do The Right Thing
“The Dog Lover” follows Sara Gold (Allison Paige), a rising star at the United Animal Protection Agency (Uapa), a major animal rights organization that seeks to stop puppy mills and conducts animal rescues. When Sara is tasked to go undercover as a college intern at a suspected puppy mill run by the conservative, enigmatic Daniel Holloway (James Remar), she jumps at the chance to shine.
Though initially gruff and reluctant to get to know Sara, Daniel slowly warms up to her and she soon starts to fall for his son William (Jayson Blair). More importantly, she doesn’t see any signs of animal abuse. But when the Uapa and local law enforcement raid the farm and accuse Daniel of animal abuse, Sara is torn between doing what’s right and doing her job, between the family she’s grown to love and the organization she swore to protect.

Jimmy Kimmel sees your Friends reunion and raises you a surprise ER reunion. There's just one problem: the only ER cast member who showed up was George Clooney (Julianna Margulies was busy filming The Good Wife, Noah Wyle had Taco Tuesday night with family, Eriq La Salle had jury duty, Anthony Edwards was at SoulCycle, and Sherry Stringfield couldn't get an Uber). But Clooney wasn't alone on stage, for Kimmel played his patient and Hugh Laurie limped in to assist as Dr. House (albeit missing his trademark stubble). I have a feeling Kimmel added a little surprise to the sketch, based on Clooney and Laurie's reaction to whatever was under the sheet and Laurie's inability to keep it together for most of the rest of it. ...

After hotly anticipated and successful premieres in Berlin and San Francisco, "54: The Director's Cut" will hit Digital HD on June 2 from Miramax and Lionsgate. Dubbed the "ultimate party movie," this freewheeling dive into the debauchery days of New York's Studio 54 has been resurrected with 44 minutes of never-before-seen material. Sexy Ryan Phillippe stars as a Jersey boy who gets sucked into this world of sex and drugs alongside Salma Haye, Breckin Meyer, Sherry Stringfield, Neve Campbell and, of course, Mike Myers as the disco mecca's icky co-owner. (In the clip below, Phillippe gets his first taste of the sweet life.) Miramax and Harvey Weinstein demanded reshoots before slashing the film down to a lean, sanitized and altogether messy 100 minutes in 1998. But the new version, which includes a key bisexual subplot left on the cutting room floor, won heaps of praise on the festival circuit this year. (Vulture has a great...
