Watch as many documentaries as I do, and you’re bound to see the Chicago White Sox’s notorious Disco Demolition Night come up in a wide variety of contexts. Sometimes the 1979 fiasco is used as a case study in racism and the marginalization of Black voices in music. Sometimes it’s used as a case study in homophobia.
In Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg’s new documentary The Saints of Second Chances, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, Disco Demolition Night is reduced to an origin story. Yes, Mike Veeck is remorseful that anybody has read negative subtext into the ill-fated promotion, but he makes it clear that he just wanted to impress his father and pack a stadium. Like several dark things in The Saint of Second Chances, any other insinuations get lost in a sea of stylistic flourishes and heart-tugging button pushing.

Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

Randy Wilkins, who directed the upcoming Derek Jeter ESPN Films documentary series “The Captain,” had one word to describe the topic he had to drag out of the stoic Hall-of-Fame shortstop: “Alex.”
New York Yankees fans in attendance at the June 12 Tribeca Festival Q&a following the first episode’s premiere got a kick out of that one. Jeter, who sat calmly on the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage beside Wilkins, perhaps did not. Wilkins, of course, was referring to Alex Rodriguez, an all-time-great Major League Baseball infielder in his own right. Jeter and A-Rod famously did not get along after the Yankees signed Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers star Rodriguez (whom many baseball pundits believed to be the superior shortstop).
Jeter held his literal ground on the left side of the infield: A-Rod switched positions to third base, and what had been an easy friendship forged at All-Star Games was never the same.

The hustle of show business means people not-infrequently have two projects hitting the market at the same time.
Even so, filmmaker Nick Davis is the creative force behind one of the more unusual doubleheaders in recent memory. He directed ESPN “30 for 30” limited series Once Upon a Time in Queens, an account of the World Series-winning, earth-scorching 1986 New York Mets. The two-night, four hour docuseries, whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel, premieres tonight and concludes tomorrow. Also today, Knopf has published Davis’s book, Competing with Idiots, a dual portrait of Joseph and Herman Mankiewicz that had been in the works for nearly two decades. The Hollywood royals were his great-uncle and grandfather, respectively.
“I’ve thought about what common ground there is between these projects,” Davis said in an interview with Deadline. “And I think what it is is that I have no memory of not being Herman Mankiewicz’s grandson.

The 1986 World Series-winning run by the New York Mets will get multi-part documentary treatment by ESPN in a project under the 30 for 30 banner whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel.
ESPN Films said Thursday the series would chronicle the team’s exploits on and off the field. In the Series, the Boston Red Sox were one strike away from victory before a two-out rally and a ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson slipped through the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. The comeback, ESPN said in a press release, “was merely the climax of an epic tale of ambition and swagger set in a city that was synonymous with excess.”
The network promises “hours of never-before-seen footage” of the team, a group of disparate, larger-than-life characters who made a big impression on and off the field. Many members of the team went on to generate headlines long after 1986, among them Darryl Strawberry,...

Lenny Dykstra has taken his war with ex-Mets teammate, Ron Darling, to court -- suing the former pitcher for painting him as a foul-mouthed racist in his new book. Darling recently published "108 Stitches: Loose Threads, Ripping Yarns and the Darndest Characters from My Time in the Game" ... which features stories from his playing days. But, Dykstra says a story about him mercilessly taunting Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd -- a black pitcher -- during the 1986 World Series is pure Bs.

Despite the involvement of two directors making their “30 for 30” debut, “Doc & Darryl” is a sports story told in the Espn documentary series’ house style. Reliving the ascent, precipitous decline and muted return of Darryl Strawberry and Dwight “Doc” Gooden, directors Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio adhere to the familiar format, letting the intertwined stories of the two men’s tragedy-laden lives speak for themselves.
Strawberry and Gooden were two electrifying rookie talents; the former an outfielder with a special blend of speed and power and the latter a gifted right-handed pitcher and strikeout machine. Apatow and Bonfiglio show how, after entering pro baseball within a season of each other, they quickly became staples of sports page headlines and New York nightlife alike. One of the things they’ve been doing during this World Series – and every one, really – is comparing them to series contenders of years past. This year, the references to the ’85 Royals and the ’86 Mets have come fast and furious, and while it’s great to talk about Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry, and Dwight Gooden again, it’s not like anybody under the age of 30 saw them play in their prime. More to the point, no one is becoming a baseball fan today from watching those guys from back then.
Sadly, to me, I think it’s the same with superheroes.
Nobody is becoming a fan of superheroes today if their first exposures are comics from 30+ years ago. I’m not talking about the characters and concepts, I’m speaking only of the works themselves. There are a lot of young kids who fell in love with Supergirl this week,...

Darryl Strawberry says Khloe Kardashian's decision to call off the divorce from Lamar Odom didn't just save their marriage ... but maybe Lamar's life ... because Lo desperately needs her love and support to get back on his feet. So, when we asked him about the Odom situation,...

Disclaimer: You probably need to enjoy Chris Rock's stand-up to enjoy his explanation of why Major League Baseball is hemorrhaging both black fans and black players. And you might want to care about baseball to begin with, too. Because this very interesting argument, which Rock made for HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, is told in monologue fashion, is peppered with expletives and sounds perfectly reasonable. "I'm an endangered species—a black baseball fan," he launches right in. The Brooklyn-raised comedian and filmmaker reminisces about the New York Mets' 1986 World Series win, featuring assists from Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Kevin Mitchell and Mookie Wilson, back when "20...

Fantasy Fútbol Turned Nightmare: Santoro Brings Bravura
As we all know, the brightest stars often burn out far faster than your average Joe, especially when referring to narcissistic, trash talking celebrity athletes who seem to care for their public image more than the bodies that bring them success. Long before we witnessed the rise and fall of Mike Tyson, Darryl Strawberry, or Tiger Woods, there was Heleno de Freitas, a Brazilian bad boy soccer superstar who led the Botafogo football club throughout the 1940s, ending his career morosely by refusing to treat a crippling case of syphilis and talking himself into alienation from the sport that made him a national icon. Director José Henrique Fonseca’s biographic portrayal of the hot headed footballer takes pains to indulge de Freitas’ worst impulses in classic antihero fashion, but Heleno steamrolls story arch conventionalism with performance bravura and striking black and white cinematography...

It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Adam Sandler's Thanksgiving Song from "Saturday Night Live." Next year the song will celebrate its 20th anniversary, which makes us feel super old. It debuted Nov. 21, 1992.
Here are the lyrics, what are your favorite parts:
Love to eat turkey
Love to eat turkey
Love to eat turkey
'Cause it's good
Love to eat turkey
Like a good boy should
'Cause it's turkey to eat
So good
Turkey for me
Turkey for you
Let's eat the turkey
In my big brown shoe
Love to eat the turkey
At the table
I once saw a movie
With Betty Grable
Eat that turkey
All night long
Fifty million Elvis fans
Can't be wrong
Turkey lurkey doo and
Turkey lurkey dap
I eat that turkey
Then I take a nap
Thanksgiving is a special night

How do you win a game when the rules are designed to make you lose?... Play a different game.
For sports neophytes unaware of the finer points on how major league sports design their business models, Major League Baseball (Mlb) runs its league according to the principles of social darwinism: every man/team for himself. Unlike the National Football League which operates as a legalized trust, sharing profits and coordinating with one another in order to make their overall product stronger, the Mlb's policy is that each team is its own wholly separate entity that must survive and suffice on its own merit and revenue.
The result is an income disparity among Mlb teams that make Marxists rabidly salivate. There are the rich teams, such as the juggernaut that is the New York Yankees, a team that can simply purchase any missing piece in their collection to almost guarantee a perennial playoff contender status,...

New York City seems to have a Chinese restaurant on every corn,er but finding a good one is pretty difficult! Well, guess what people? I have!
Phillipe Chow puts a kick ass flair on classic Chinese cuisine! From the outside, the restaurant seems like a small bar/lounge, but make sure to do a double take because when you go inside you are swept up into a super chic and intimate eatery. The menu is full of authentic Chinese cuisine with little interesting twists. Some of my personal favorites were the peking duck spring rolls, lettuce wraps, green prawns, and chicken satay. The waiters were constantly checking on us as well I loved their white get-ups!
The whole vibe of the restaurant was just so cool that when the food ended up being insatiable I was totally blown away!

After bombing at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall, Charlie stopped by Justin Timberlake’s southern style restaurant!
Charlie Sheen loves his southern cookin’! The former Two and a Half Men star performed his “Violent Torpedo of Truth” tour in NYC on April 10 and then headed straight to Southern Hospitality for some Memphis-style Bq in Hell’s Kitchen.
Charlie, his goddesses, retired baseball slugger Darryl Strawberry, Inside The Actors Studio‘s James Lipton and Chuck Zito chowed down on deep fried pickles, pulled-pork sliders, and BBQ spare ribs!
And believe it or not — Charlie was only spotted drinking water and coffee throughout the night!

It's a question any fan should be asking of venerable actor, bon vivant, and Inside the Actor's Studio host James Lipton: "What would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates and have to explain that one time you mounted the stage as part of Charlie Sheen's train wreck of a one-man show?" Because that's exactly what our favorite man of words and theater did Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall, where he and fellow special guest Darryl Strawberry (hey, why not?) helped Sheen earn a standing ovation. Video evidence after the jump.

Charlie Sheen bombed again in NYC on Friday night, getting heckled and booed while begging for his Two and a Half Men job back, and left the stage 30 minutes early in what one critic described as stinking up Radio City Music Hall "like a flatulent goddess."
Last night Sheen rebounded by throwing away his script and interacting with the crowd, inviting James Lipton and Darryl Strawberry on stage and, of course, taking off his shirt. He walked off to a standing ovation.

It's confirmed Britney Spears has signed Nicki Minaj as the opening act for her upcoming Femme Fatale tour. Meanwhile she's teamed up with Rihanna for a remix of "S&M," and apparantly Britney likes the rough stuff too, singing, "If I'm bad, tie me down. Shut me up, gag and bound me/'Cause the pain is my pleasure/Nothing comes better."
