Director Stu Stone and producing partner Adam Rodness want you to know that their indie film comedy Vandits — about small-time crooks looking to rob a senior citizens’ bingo hall of its 25,000 jackpot on Christmas Eve — having 250,000 worth of camera and lighting equipment stolen on their first day of shooting was no publicity stunt.
“There’s an empty parking space. Where’s the truck? Really, where’s the truck?” Stone recalls asking ashen-faced production crew members in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 2021 as he stared at where a truck and trailer with all of his film gear inside had been parked the night before.
It might have looked like a stunt as the Toronto-based filmmakers’ last movie had been Faking a Murderer, a 2020 docu-comedy where Stone and Rodness, in search of their next hit, investigate a seedy man they believed to be a serial killer but never was.

Available today on VOD & digital is Faking a Murderer from director / co-writer Stuart Stone and co-writer Adam Rodness! Here's an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead viewers:
"Faking a Murderer follows two filmmakers on their noble yet perhaps misguided quest to track down a seedy-looking stranger they’ve discovered online who — in a disturbing video — seemingly confesses to a murder. Or at least that’s what they think. Seeing the popularity of true crime shows, they decide to try and turn this discovery into their own killer hit. With the support (both moral and financial) of a distributor, Stuart Stone and Adam Rodness set off on their journey to try and track down this elusive creep. When they bring the video to law enforcement, they’re told — repeatedly — that it’s really not much to go on, and they’re putting a lot of time and energy into what essentially is a fool’s errand.

Tagline: "It Was Supposed to be the Summer of Their Dreams...Nightmares." Scarecrows is a horror film from director Stuart Stone. Completed in 2017, this title was released in the U.S. late in 2018. Now, this thriller is coming to Digital platforms, in Canada, this May. From writer Adam Rodness, Scarecrows follows four stoners and their trip into an ominous cornfield. In the cornfield, a psychotic farmer is waiting for them. Also, this title stars: Hannah Gordon (Hurt), Mike Taylor (The Hot Zone), Umed Amin and Maaor Ziv. Black Fawn Distribution will handle the Digital rollout in Canada. The film's latest showing details are hosted here. The synopsis also mentions characters being turned into scarecrows. The film's Canadian release poster shows one character bloodied and bruised. Her lips sewn shut, the farmer looms over the graphic. And, this is one field that trespassers should have avoided. It’s not particularly good… some people may have now given up reading the rest of this review proving how showing your hand early can be the worst thing to do. In the case of Stu Stone’s sophomore effort Scarecrows, this is something he should have taken heed of.
Within the first five minutes, the biggest plot point has been revealed as we find that a farmer with a grudge against trespassers has replaced straw and cloth scarecrows with a much more authentic version. This leaves Stone relying on the empathy that we should be feeling for his protagonists and this is where things begin to go wrong but just like Stone’s last scene, let me take you back to the beginning.

It's a variation on the classic actor's nightmare: You step into a room for an audition. The casting director is perusing your headshot. You exchange polite hellos, and a quizzical expression passes over her face. Her eyes move up and down between you and the frozen image in her hand. Her mouth tightens. You know it's coming. You try to predict which line she will speak:"So, are you here to read for the niece or the aunt?""When did you last have your headshots done?""Excuse me, do I even have the right person here?"All because the person in the photo is younger, thinner, sexier, better looking, and/or more glamorous than you. You can rationalize: "Geez, everybody exaggerates. Casting directors expect that. Anyway, she should be more interested in my acting chops than my headshot."Just be glad the authority figure in your fantasy isn't Jeff Mitchell...

As part of its new monthly series Back Stage at the SAG Foundation, Back Stage presented the panel "Picture This: Your Headshot From Every Angle" May 12 to a packed crowd at the SAG Foundation in Los Angeles. Speakers included casting directors Marci Liroff, Geralyn Flood, and Stuart Stone and photographers Kevyn Major Howard, Alan Weissman, Sara Corwin, and Jeff E Photo. The event was moderated by Back Stage research and casting editor Jessica Gardner. From the outset, this discussion proved to be lively, with Stone calling out photographers who charge actors more than $375 for headshots. Three out of the four photographers on the panel charge more than that, so it sparked an instant debate that lasted throughout the two-hour event. The panel had tension, drama, plenty of arguing, and strong opinions, but, most important, it was honest. Audience members who volunteered to have their headshots critiqued received candid evaluations from the CDs and photographers.

"You need to use the Internet to have any career at all," says actor David Blue, who plays the recurring role of Cliff, Marc St. James' (Michael Urie) love interest on Ugly Betty. What was once the domain of paper and ink now fills cyberspace. Casting has gone from the hand-to-stack exercise of sorting through headshots to the click-and-scroll of digital images and videos. And in direct response, actors are turning to the Internet for support, social networking, and self-promotion. They are creating new roles for themselves: that of a "cyber self." Blue uses his MySpace page combo-style — personally and professionally. "MySpace has acted as a site where fans and people interested in keeping up with me can hear what's happening on a regular basis," he says. Actor and comedian Jason Stuart, who played the recurring role of Dr. Steven Michael Thomas on My Wife and Kids and co-stars in...
