The Crystal Maze reaches the end of its celebrity run with a couple of Loose Women, an EastEnder, a Northerner and a class clown…
In the genus of UK gameshow hosts, Richard Ayoade defies sub-categorisation. He’s not a Blood-Drinking Reptilian Overlord (Chris Tarrant, Noel Edmonds, Eamonn Holmes), nor is he Someone Who Would Be Driving A Foxtons Mini If They Weren’t On TV (Patrick Mulhern, Davina McCall, Paddy McGuinness, Vernon Kay). He’s not a Barrymore, a Bowen or a Les Dennis, and neither is he a Grandad Who 100% Killed Someone In The War (William G. Stewart, Des Lynam, Bruce Forsyth).

Daphne Fowler left Eggheads a few years ago after a long, successful quizzing career. Here’s why she’s an inspiration…
In April 2002, Daphne Fowler and Chris Hughes formed part of a quizzing supergroup assembled by The Guardian. For a bit of fun, the newspaper set some of the country’s top trivia buffs loose on the greater London pub quiz circuit to see what havoc they could wreak.
The “dream team” cut a swathe from Clerkenwell to Hampstead, only coming unstuck on a foray to the King’s Head in Rochester where they lost the win by a single point. Having failed to recognise the theme tune to Beverley Hills 90210, they filed onto the minibus home and drove away from the week’s lone defeat. Somewhere along the A2, a dejected then-out-of-work Hughes told his teammates “I just wish I could turn all this garbage in...

Dr Bennet Omalu, played by Will Smith in the film Concussion, says accusations that he overstated his role in the discovery of the condition Cte are ‘totally false’
Medical professionals have cast doubt on some of the research claims made by forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu, whose pioneering work in the field of identifying head trauma in NFL players is the subject of the Will Smith film Concussion.
According to a doctor interviewed by AP, assertions by Omalu that he discovered and identified the condition Cte (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), which he diagnosed during the autopsy of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Webster, are “just not true”. AP quote William Stewart, a neuropathologist at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, as saying: “I think he knows that … chronic traumatic encephalopathy has been around for decades. It’s not a new term … The only thing I would say that Bennet has done is that...

We chat to Mackenzie Crook about new comedy The Detectorists, Game Of Thrones, Pirates 5, and why he'd never do an Office reunion…
“I hate the word gentle” Mackenzie Crook tells us, “it just sounds like unfunny.” Reviews of The Detectorists, a new BBC Four comedy about a pair of metal-detecting enthusiasts written and directed by Crook, have relied heavily on the g-word.
It’s understandable in many ways. Crook’s series is difficult to pigeonhole. It rolls along the English countryside telling a low-key story about Andy and Lance’s preoccupation with searching for ancient objects - a search more likely to bring up 1980s ring-pulls than a hoard of Saxon gold. It’s no gag-fest, but it’s certainly not unfunny. The Detectorists’ sense of humour is wry, bathetic, and steeped in very British references. Where else would you find a hymn to William G. Stewart’s tenure...

We love a good game show, so imagine our delight that the classic Fifteen to One is back - only this time with Sandi Toksvig as the host! The series actually began on Saturday, but now it's airing Monday to Friday so there's no excuse for not brushing up your general knowledge. Still, in case you needed a little bit more convincing, we chatted to Sandi herself to find out why you should be tuning in...
1. Sandi isn't just copying William G Stewart.
"You just try to make it your own. I'm not William G Stewart, and if they'd wanted that they'd have hired a boy who is tall and wears glasses. I met with the producers who are lovely and said, 'You understand that I'll do it in a different way?' It's not my style to just ask questions - I like to get to know people and...

Channel 4 has confirmed that Fifteen to One will return for a full series next year.
Adam Hills will host four celebrity editions of the classic TV quiz, while Sandi Toksvig will front a normal series of 20 episodes in the daytime.
A one-off celebrity special was hosted by Hills for Channel 4's 1980s night in September.
William G Stewart presented the original series, which ran from January 1988 to December 2003.
Fifteen to One features 15 contestants attempting to answer questions correctly, while also nominating others to face the next question. The contestants are then whittled down to three finalists, before crowning an eventual winner.
Hills said: "I am thrilled to be part of the ongoing institution that is Fifteen To One. The celebrity specials combine two of my favourite things – general knowledge questions, and the chance to watch well-known people try not to make dicks of themselves in public."
Toksvig added:...

Washington, Nov 24: Selena Gomez's alleged stalker, Thomas Brodnicki's temporary restraining order has been extended, with another hearing set to take place on 6 January 2012.
A judge had ruled that Brodnicki, currently locked away in a Los Angeles hospital on a 5150 psychiatric hold, must stay at least 100 yards away from the 19-year-old star until the next hearing.
As he is on 5150 psychiatric hold, which can be enforced if a person is deemed to have a mental disorder making them a danger to themselves and/or others, Brodnicki did not appear in court on Wednesday to argue his case against the order.

The man accused of stalking Selena Gomez remains in psychiatric custody, it has been revealed. Gomez was granted a temporary restraining order against Thomas Brodnicki in October after she received death threats from the man, a protection which has since been extended, reports E Online. Because of his continued stay at a Los Angeles county hospital on a 5150 psychiatric hold, Brodnicki was unable to argue the ruling in court on Wednesday, which prohibits him from coming within 100 feet of Gomez. However, Judge William Stewart, who extended the restraining (more)...

Selena Gomez has something to be thankful for. Thomas Brodnicki, the starlet's alleged stalker, continues to be locked up on a 5150 psychiatric hold at a county hospital, Lapd Det. Jose Viramontes tells E! News. As a result, Brodnicki did not appear in court this morning to argue against the restraining order that prohibits him from coming within 100 yards of Gomez. However, Judge William Stewart expressed concern today that Brodnicki may be denied his right to due process by not being able to appear at the hearing and defend himself. "It's a basic due process right and the court isn't satisfied as he has been granted that right," Stewart said. Gomez's attorney,...

Quiz shows are a piece of cake these days. On Deal Or No Deal, for instance, the only real challenge is being able to put up with listening to Noel Edmonds's mumbo jumbo for an hour. Similarly, Davina McCall's Million Pound Drop appeared to be based on the idea that we love watching idiots throwing away cash on questions that 99% of viewers at home know the answers to. There was a time when quiz shows were fronted by distinguished men with class and an air of sophistication. Sadly, those days passed when William G. Stewart called it a day on the toughest quiz of them all - Fifteen To One - back in 2003. Stewart was a director, producer and host without compare during his 15-year stint (more)...
