Billy Idol reached the height of his drug addiction four decades ago, but the 68-year-old has since found a routine that works for him: no more hard drugs, just an occasional crisp glass of wine. In other words, he is California sober.
“I can have a glass of wine every now and again,” Idol recently told People. “I don’t have to do nothing. But at the same time, I’m not the drug addict that I was in the peak ’70s, ’80s.” He adds, “I’m, I suppose, ‘California sober.

Billy Idol recently released a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of his seminal album Rebel Yell, and to celebrate the occasion, he performed the classic title track live on NBC’s Today.
The performance is notable in that Billy and his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens play the song semi-unplugged. Following an introduction by Al Roker, the duo are left to their lonesome on the sound stage, creating an intimate and up-close setting for the rendition.

Stevens guides the song’s arrangement with electric-acoustic strums that let Idol’s voice soar commandingly through the room. Not only does the stripped-down approach fit perfectly within the Today show’s studio format, it also offers an alternate spin on an otherwise rousing rock anthem.
The Today appearance follows a lighting ceremony for Idol at the Empire State Building. There, Idol and Stevens performed a similar acoustic concert for a...

Albert Hammond Jr, best known as the lead guitarist in The Strokes, has announced his fifth solo album, Melodies on Hiatus, out June 23rd on Red Bull Records. What’s more, he’s shared a handful of supporting tour dates (grab tickets here) and lead single “100-99” featuring Goldlink.
Besides GoldLink, Melodies on Hiatus features Rainsford, Steve Stevens, and Matt Helders. It was co-written remotely with Simon Wilcox, with premium mastering from Dave Cooley and mixing by Tony Hoffer. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“100-99” was partially inspired by the ’90s hip-hop Hammond Jr grew up listening to, he explained in a statement. “I would always gravitate towards the melodic hooks in the songs I heard on the radio, specifically anything Dr. Dre was producing or rapping on,” he said. “Years later, I noticed myself pulling from the style of those melodic lines in my guitar work, even though it wasn’t...

Public intrigue in the Weeknd’s dark music has officially lasted a decade. Over the weekend, the once-mysterious chart-topper re-released his 2011 debut mixtape House of Balloons in celebration of its 10th anniversary. It arrived as a reminder of a particular moment in recent history. From the start, the Weeknd was destined to experiment with genre and form. House of Balloons wasn’t even intended to be an R&b project, as it’s often thought of — likely because it was coming from a Black man with a delicate voice. In reality,...

Los Angeles chillwave band Poolside has released a remix of Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without a Face.”
The Poolside version stays close to the original recording — from Idol’s second album, 1983’s Rebel Yell — keeping Perri Lister on backing vocals while adding lush, languid beats.
“I’m flattered that Poolside chose to remix ‘Eyes Without a Face,'” Idol said in a statement. “Steve Stevens and Keith Forsey helped me take the original recording somewhere special back in 1983. Poolside’s new remix guides the song in another direction with its chill vibe,...

In a sign of what may be seen as an emerging, successful alternative to expensive red carpet charity events, Saturday night’s two-hour Lead With Love: Project Angel Food Emergency Telethon, which aired live on Ktla 5, smashed its fundraising goal. The virtual event exceeded its $500,000 goal by nearly $200,000, totaling more than $700,000 during the all-star event, at very little cost to the Hollywood-based nonprofit Project Angel Food.
A-list names, including Sir Elton John, David Furnish, Jamie Lee Curtis, Matt Bomer and Sharon Stone, contributed brief segments celebrating Project Angel Food’s contributions to Hollywood’s underserved community. Furnish and Curtis both mentioned bringing their families with them to volunteer at the facility, which prepares and delivers tens of thousands of meals each week to people in need.

Nearly two years after Black Sabbath wrapped their massive farewell tour, bassist Geezer Butler unveiled his next move: a supergroup project featuring drummer Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), guitarist Steve Stevens (Billy Idol) and vocalist Franky Perez (Scars on Broadway, Apocalyptica).
The quartet released their first single, the brooding blues-rock epic “Down in Flames.” The track opens with Sorum’s borderline-shuffled 6/8 drum groove and settles into a massive, distorted riff from Butler and Stevens. “It’s gonna be a long, cold winter/ For saints and for sinners,” Perez howls over the din,...

Pasadena - Forget the AFI Top 10 list of Best TV shows. Why should care about TV since they are the American Film Institute? This is kind like the American Diabetic Prevention Society’s Top 10 Favorite Sugary Candy Bars list. Or Bravo’s Top 10 Hunting Shows. Or Madd’s Best 10 Drinks to Mess You Up. Or Charlie Sheen’s Top 10 Things You Can Do Without Involving Hookers and Blow. If they care about TV that much, shouldn’t they be the Aftvi? But they are a pack of List Whores over at AFI with their 100 Years a 100 Stupid Lists press releases.
Why does critic or critic group have to tell you the Best or Worst of the Year? Party Favors is proud to announce the Meh Awards for the 10 TV shows that didn’t work for me in 2010. They weren’t the most pathetic things on TV, but made me lose interest in watching them.
