Rare Billy Connolly documentary Big Banana Feet is undergoing restoration for a DVD and Blu-ray release, courtesy of the BFI.
Billy Connolly is unquestionably one of the most beloved stand-up comedians to ever grace the stage.
An alternative comedian before the term existed, Connolly was playing folk clubs with the likes of Jasper Carrott and Richard Digance in the early 1970s. Eventually, his patter between songs became so popular, Connolly ditched the music and became a stand up comic full time.
He has consistently been voted amongst the best stand up comedians on history by peers and public alike. He undertook his final tour, High Horse, in 2016 and published his latest autobiography, Windswept And Interesting, in 2021.
1975 was a landmark year for Connolly, as it marked the first of many appearences on Michael Parkinson’s chat show. The same year, a documentary called Big Banana Feet was filmed. It’s title came from the huge,...

Welder, comedian, Hollywood star, celebrated artist… The life story of Billy Connolly has been a real page turner. Here, he talks about love, loss and landing on his feet
A fostered-off schoolboy going nowhere fast, turned apprentice welder on the Clyde. A welder turned regionally popular musician. A musician turned nationally popular comic. A comic turned Hollywood actor and an actor turned New York artist, then a retiree who’s recently been muttering his memoirs into a recording device in the Florida Keys… Billy Connolly has already been through one or two big transitions in his life. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the 78-year-old, who has been ill with Parkinson’s for some time, can face up to the next transition (the last one) with such a playful disposition. If he ever finds himself brooding on death, Connolly confesses, when we chat one autumn morning, he will shake along...

For its 40th anniversary, we revisit Roald Dahl's classic series that kept us guessing and inspired some modern anthology greats...
Tales Of The Unexpected was an anthology series of imaginative and compelling dramas each with a "twist in the tale" produced for the ITV network by Anglia Television. Anthology series on British television had been decidedly sci-fi orientated, hitherto, with the BBC series Out Of The Unknown (1965-71) capitalizing on the imported success of the granddaddy of them all, Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone. The story has it that Anglia's Drama supremo Sir John Woolf had a chance meeting with Roald Dahl, master of macabre tall stories, at a Christmas party in 1976. Dahl asked Woolf, "How would you like to make a television series of my stories?" Woolf immediately saw the potential and commissioned Dahl to adapt some of his best stories for a series...

Hollywood’s got it down to a science. Audience demographics, judgment and projected fantasies can all help create that all-important spark. Just look at Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, says sex therapist and former actor Pamela Stephenson Connolly
The mysterious relationship between actors who play on-screen lovers has long been conversational catnip. For audiences, the believability of attraction is a topic that approaches almost academic analysis. Such chemistry tends to be viewed as an absolute. By common agreement, a couple either have it (Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in, say, To Have and Have Not) or they don’t (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in By the Sea).
La La Land, a frontrunner for next year’s best picture Oscar, reunites Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as lovers for the third time, following Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad. Here, they sling fiery one-liners at each other, break into song,...

Angelique 'Frenchy' Morgan
So who is she? Angelique is a model, exotic dancer and, er, 'adult film star'.
What do I need to know? Angelique is nicknamed Frenchy, presumably because she was raised in Paris. She's probably the star who'll get the most 'who?' comments, but if you want to know your stuff, she landed appearances on the Howard Stern Show after being on Playboy TV. As the undisputed king of American gothic, Vincent Price holds a unique position regarding his association with British horror. From the mid sixties, nearly all his films were made in the UK, and while not as distinguished as The House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962) and The Raven (1963), they are not without interest. As an actor perfectly suited to English gothic, Price’s output includes two career-defining performances. In a nutshell, he had the best of both worlds.
Masque of the Red Death (1964)
The British phase of his career began with a bang. After directing all of Price’s Poe chillers for American International Pictures, Roger Corman wanted to give the formula a fresh approach by making his next film in England. Aip’s Samuel Z Arkoff and James H Nicholson had already produced several European films, so the next step was to establish a London base with Louis M Heyward in charge.

London, Mar 8: Comedian Billy Connolly has stopped taking his medication for Parkinson's disease because they were apparently turning him into a sex addict.
He told a chat show in the Us that the side effects are an overriding interest in sex and gambling, the Mirror reported.
Scientists say drugs used to treat the neurological condition are linked to compulsive shopping, cleaning and gambling, as well as a higher sex drive.
Billy was diagnosed with the degenerative brain disorder last year after an Australian doctor, who was a fan, told him he was showing early signs of the illness.
The star - who is married to psychologist Pamela Stephenson, 64, and has five children from his two marriages - also had prostate.

British comedian Mel Smith died Friday, after suffering a heart attack at his London home. He was 60. Smith made his television debut in a bit part in Stephen Frears’ controversial 1979 TV film Bloody Kids. Later that year, he got his big break when he joined the cast of Not The Nine O’Clock News, the celebrated and star-making topical sketch-comedy series that also featured Rowan Atkinson, Chris Langham, and future Saturday Night Live cast member Pamela Stephenson. Griff Rhys Jones, who had pitched in on the show’s first season, became a full cast member in the second ...

Comedian, actor, writer and director who came to prominence in satirical TV sketch show Not the Nine O'Clock News
Mel Smith was once upstaged by a talking gorilla. He was playing a zoologist in a sketch on his hit comedy show Not the Nine O'Clock News and the gorilla suit contained Rowan Atkinson. "When I caught Gerald in 68 he was completely wild," said Smith. "Wild?" retorted the gorilla. "I was absolutely livid!"
If the gorilla had the best line, Smith had the more expressive countenance, mugging with a deadpan virtuosity rarely seen since Oliver Hardy in his pomp. That face – as hangdog as his childhood hero Tony Hancock's – made Smith, who has died of a heart attack aged 60, one of the most recognisable of postwar British comedians.

Best known for roles in Alas Smith and Jones and Not the Nine O'Clock News, the comic also reached No 3 in the music charts
The classic image of Mel Smith was head to head in conversation with Griff Rhys Jones, discussing anything from politics to sex, on Alas Smith and Jones.
Sometimes, in variety show or charity events, either the part of Smith or Jones was played by a celebrity. The show was broadcast from 1984-89 as Alas Smith and Jones and from 1989-98 as Smith and Jones.
Here Smith and Rhys Jones discuss the 60s and the Beatles.
In 1986, Smith parodied the monotonous broadcast of the football results, which were an essential and lengthy part of many news broadcasts at the time.

Billy Connolly has revealed that he still loves his late father, who sexually abused him for five years as a youngster. The Scottish actor and comedian explained that the power of forgiveness towards his father was "immense". Connolly first spoke about his father's abuse in a biography written by wife Pamela Stephenson in 2001, 12 years after father William died. His mother left his family when he was three years old, and was raised by his father and two aunts, consequently suffering a tough childhood. He explained that he did not mean to keep the abuse secret during his rise to fame in the 1970s and 1980s. "It wasn't the time to talk about things like that - not like now," he told Kirsty Wark for the BBC's Review Show. "I just didn't want to talk about it. It was mine and I kind of liked it being mine. I thought it...

As cult comics speak to us from beyond the grave, Julian Clary and Airplane display their enduring popularity
Best of this week's news
Cult comics speak to us from beyond the grave this week, as Film Four announce a new film loosely based on the life and career of Chris Sievey and his alter ego Frank Sidebottom. Sidebottom was the large-headed wannabe pop star who became an unlikely phenomenon in the 1980s – which isn't exactly typecasting for the X-Men and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender, who's slated to play him. The movie is by screenwriter Peter Straughan and writer Jon Ronson, who has tweeted to deny that the film is explicitly about Sievey/Sidebottom.
No such coyness from the wife of Peter Cook, who has released 40 hours of unreleased material by her husband to mark the relaunch of The Establishment club (see last week's Laughing Stock) in Soho. Says record label boss Mike O'Brien,...

"There was questions about my sexuality and I was seen as the plain member of the band, you know, the ugly one in the back who doesn't do much.

On Mother’s Day in the UK on Sunday, a hundred runners, including psychologist and TV personality Dr Pamela Stephenson-Connolly, wife of Billy Connolly and who has recently returned from the Congo, took part in Women for Women International’s Run for Congo, to support mothers in the eastern provinces of the Congo who have been brutalised by war.
Every penny raised goes to helping women in the war ravaged eastern provinces to rebuild their lives and support themselves and their families. Since Run for Congo launched in the UK last summer over £71,325 has already been raised by runners around the country who have joined an existing run, or put on a dedicated Run for Congo. £150 is enough provide skills training for one woman in Congo, enabling her to earn an income and provide for her family, which means that the £71,325 raised so far is enough to support 475 and their families.

Superman turns bad and Richard Pryor does funny in this nightmarish third instalment. Here’s Mark’s appreciation of Superman III…
It's a given that people visiting this site will have collected their fair share of movie memories during their childhood. For me, Superman III provides many standout moments that will live long in the memory. I first saw it on television when I was about ten, I think, and it struck me as one of the scariest experiences I had ever had in my tender years.
The third film in the franchise is very much a product of its time, taking advantage of growing knowledge and interest in technology by introducing computer genius, Gus Gorman, played by Richard Pryor in a rather odd piece of casting. Pryor's comedic turn as Gorman lends much needed comic relief to a film that flips the notion of the family-friendly film on its head,...

The 61-year-old psychologist – who is married to comedian Billy Connolly – came third alongside professional dancer James Jordan in the BBC One show last year, and credits the series with doing a better job on her figure than boot camp.
She explained: “Dancing is the number one anti-aging strategy. Without surgery, I am looking better than I have looked in a long time, just through dancing. Body by James Jordan – thank you James!
“I don’t think there is anything wrong with being whatever shape or size you want to be, but being on ‘Strictly’ was like being in a fabulous boot camp and I feel so much better now. I get up in the morning and I just feel great.

Pamela Stephenson “cannot bear” the idea of putting on weight.
The 61-year-old ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star – who came in third place and lost over 40lbs during her stint on the show – admits she is “almost embarrassed” about how much weight she lost, which saw her body change from a size 16 to a size 12.

Pamela Stephenson was worried people would think she was having an affair with James Jordan.
The 61-year-old psychotherapist – who is married to comedian Billy Connolly – decided to openly address her crush on her 32-year-old ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ partner so fans of the BBC One show didn’t speculate on whether they were enjoying a raunchy affair.
She explained: “I believe at some level people knew I was relishing the opportunity to have a sanctioned mini ‘affair’ with him – unconsummated of course – that provided an intriguing subplot for our so-called ‘Strictly’ story. I didn’t hide my feelings, and chose to be quite open about my temporary crush on James.
“If I had not, I fear that, despite our age difference, there might have been speculation about the possibility of a little granny-s***ging going on behind the scenery!”

Pamela Stephenson has said that she was surprised by how far she managed to progress on this year's Strictly Come Dancing. The actress and her partner James Jordan finished third on Saturday night's final of the dance competition. Stephenson told The Guardian: "Personally, I was utterly gobsmacked that I got anywhere near a chance at the trophy, having entered the competition as a chubby, unfit and exhausted psychotherapist in an age bracket that seemed to guarantee early elimination. "At that time it was unimaginable that I would end up dancing in a final against two talented and super-athletic young people whose combined age was less than mine. Rather than having regrets at coming third, I think I agree with those who have kindly said they feel I did actually 'win' in so many ways." She continued: (more)...

Sharon Osbourne was forced to apologize for repeatedly swearing while presenting a live show on U.K. TV on Monday, December 20. The "America's Got Talent" host was filling in for presenter Lorraine Kelly on morning programme "Lorraine" when she let slip the word "bl**dy" at least twice.
After producers asked her to apologize to viewers, Osbourne said, "I think I've offended somebody because they've said in my ear here that I've said the word bl**dy and I've got to apologize... I'm sorry, I shouldn't say that in the morning... it's not allowed and I don't want to offend anyone and it's Christmas, so I'm going to be nice."
But Osbourne faced the wrath of TV bosses when she accidentally let slip the offensive word again, telling guest Pamela Stephenson, who recently lost a lot of weight on reality contest "Strictly Come Dancing": "You've got nothing to bl**dy lose.

Kara Tointon was on cloud nine when she won Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday night, however she experienced a quick comedown when she had to take a trip to A&E just hours later.
The former Eastenders actress beat Pamela Stephenson and Matt Baker and took the glitterball trophy, when she received the highest amount of public votes after her stunning showdance and emotional waltz. However while she was rehearsing her energetic freestyle routine earlier in the afternoon, Kara hurt her arm and had to be loaded with painkillers to take part in the BBC show.
Once the medication wore off, Tointon found that she was in agony and her dad drove her to the local hospital for an x-ray. She told The Sun:
“Emotions were running high.
“We had just won and we couldn’t believe it and we were on cloud nine and we kissed. We were so overwhelmed by it all.

Pamela Stephenson and James Jordan have become the first couple to be eliminated on tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing final.
Narrowly missing out on a chance of winning the glitterball trophy, the pair finished in third place, leaving Kara Tointon and Matt Baker battling it out for the crown.
Pamela and James scored a perfect 40 with their Viennese Waltz earlier in the evening, with judge Bruno Tonioli gushing:
So elegant and graceful, that for me was even more emotional that the last time. It was like an invitation into movie magic, it was wonderful.
Their showdance was well received by head judge Len Goodman, who told the talented pair:
You’ve used all the skills that you’ve learned and put them into your freestyle routine. It was charming.

Speaking before the finale, former Eastenders actress Kara – who earlier impressed the judges with her energetic showdance – said that even though things are heating up on the dancefloor, she has a huge amount of respect for her fellow competitors.
On 61 year old TV psychologist Pamela Stephenson, Tointon told The News Of The World:
“She’s a machine. Her drive shocks and inspires us.
“She gets up and goes for it and I look at her and wish I had that energy. Me and Artem both do.”
And on Countryfile’s Matt Baker she added:
“He’s so lovely. I got on so well with them from the beginning. He and Aliona help us and give tips to us. We all help each other.

Tonight is the grand finale of Strictly Come Dancing and Kara Tointon is competing against Matt Baker and Pamela Stephenson to be crowned as this year’s champion. She and professional partner Artem Chigvintsev have done little to dispel rumours their relationship is as hot off the dancefloor and it is on and no one would be happier if that is the case than Artem’s proud mum Anna.
She told The News Of The World:
“She (Kara) looks really great. They make a beautiful couple which fills my heart with pride and joy.”
And Kara will get to meet her prospective future mother in law soon, as soon as she gets her visa sorted. Anna added:
“I will get it soon then come to England and see Anton and Kara personally.
“I want to see her and talk to her, then I will have a clearer understanding of her personality.
