After 148 days of a WGA strike that ground production to a halt and put tens of thousands out of work, everyone in Hollywood has a reason to celebrate this week after the guild and the studios reached a tentative agreement Sunday night and the strike came to an end this morning. The WGA leadership, which approved the deal yesterday and sent it to the membership for a vote, has called “exceptional” the agreement, which includes AI guardrails, viewership-based residuals, writers room minimums, pay raises and other major gains.
Strikers, who spent months on the picket lines to protect the future of writing as a profession, have been sharing their joy on social media, telling each other excitedly, “Let’s go back to work.”

Striking Writers Guild of America members expressed both tempered optimism and wariness Wednesday in response to the news that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had reached out to restart talks amid stalled contract negotiations.
“I hope they’re serious, I hope that they are coming to this with a much more open mind than they had last time,” said three-time WGA negotiating committee co-chair Billy Ray (Captain Phillips), who is not playing that role this year. “I can tell you if they are, a deal will be made.”
Former WGA West president Howard Rodman added in a written statement: “One hopes that the AMPTP may at long last grasp that the cost of negotiating a fair deal is less than the cost of an ongoing strike. But Friday’s conversation is, quite simply, a single and very preliminary step.”

On Nov. 7, the Writers Guild of America unveiled its negotiating committee for its upcoming 2023 contract talks, a list that combines longtime union leaders with prominent members and writers working across genres. But so far, without a general membership meeting or “pattern of demands” released, guild members have been left guessing about whether the union might mount a credible strike threat in the spring or table harder-hitting talks for a more economically stable time.
While top execs are preparing for a strike they are sure is coming after the WGA’s contract expires May 1 — and the WGA leadership has been nettled by the Directors Guild of America initiating informal talks with employers — the writers themselves are less certain.

Meredith Stiehm will be the next president of the WGA West. Stiehm, running unopposed, will succeed David A. Goodman, who has termed out, on Sept. 21.
Stiehm, who executive produced Homeland and Cold Case, will be only the third woman to hold the union’s highest elected position. The WGA West and its forerunner, the Screen Writers Guild, have had 47 presidents since their founding in 1933 — all but two of whom have been men. Michele Mulroney will be the guild’s next vice president, and Betsy Thomas will be the next secretary-treasurer. Both are running unopposed, and it will mark the first time in the guild’s history that all three of its top elected posts were held by women. Mulroney...

Netflix has cancelled the Melissa Joan Hart and Sean Astin comedy “No Good Nick” after just one season, individuals with knowledge of the cancellation tell TheWrap.
The multi-camera followed 13-year-old Nick, short for Nicole, who infiltrates a family with the intention to get revenge on them for unknowingly ruining her life. As she gets to know the family, she will find compassion for them and will struggle with whether or not she can ultimately go through with the plan.
Hart played the career mom to Astin’s knuckle-headed dad, with Siena Agudong (Nickelodeon’s “Star Falls”) as Nick. It also starred Lauren Lindsey Donzis and Kalama Epstein, who are also veteran child actors.

The first photos are out from "Kindergarten Cop 2," the forthcoming sequel to the now 25-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger family action-comedy.
Universal's 1440 Entertainment, which specializes in direct-to-video sequels and reboots like "The Scorpion King 4," "Jarhead 3," "Hard Target 2" and the disturbingly named "Beethoven's Treasure Tail," are behind this follow-up which sees Dolph Lundgren taking on the part of a tough-guy law enforcement officer.
Lundgren's Agent Reed goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to retrieve a flash drive with sensitive information stolen from the Witness Protection Program. Unlike Arnie, Lundgren's character must also face off with the school's "politically correct environment".
Don Michael Paul ("Jarhead 2: Field of Fire") helms from a script by David H. Steinberg ("American Pie 2").

Earlier this year, we learned that Dolph Lundgren was shooting Kindergarten Cop 2. I was surprised to learn that this is actually happening, and now we have some official photos from the film featuring a frustrated Lundgren yelling at kids and other awkward interactions that the actor has with them.
In the film, Lundgren plays an undercover cop posing as a kindergarten teacher who is "on the trail of a missing flash drive from the Federal Witness protection program. Somehow it’s wound up in a kindergarten class." Lundgren will also have "an Indian sidekick named Sanjit" helping him track down a group of Albanian bad guys.
It's a shame they didn't get Arnold Schwarzenegger on board to team up with Lundgren in this ridiculous sequel. As I joked about in my initial report, the next Expendables movie should be patterned after Kindergarten Cop. I have to watch this movie...

Dolph Lundgren is stepping into the shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger to take on the classic role of a Kindergarten Cop. The movie is real and is currently filming in Vancouver.
The new film will be directed by Michael Don Paul, director of Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, from a script by David H. Steinberg (American Pie). The plot goes something like this: The Kindergarten cop and his Indian sidekick named Sanjit are on the trail of a missing flash drive from the Federal Witness protection program. Somehow it’s wound up in a kindergarten class.
I can’t imagine this going to theaters, but stranger things have happened. Like, remember that time Dolph Lundgren was in a sequel to Kindergarten Cop 25 years after the original? Crazy.

There are good Arnold movies. There are bad Arnold movies. Then there are the Arnold comedies. As a mild career revitalization, Arnold Schwarzenegger became a comedic lead in the '90s, headlining yuk fests of sorts like Twins, Jingle All the Way, Junior and Kindergarten Cop. As Hollywood has started making their way remaking, rebooting or sequelizing Arnold's past projects, it looks like the comedies are next in line, with a remake of Kindergarten Cop in the works. And maybe a TV series too. Unlike most of these reports, we do know whose on board to write and direct this new project. Don Michael Paul, an actor who also helmed hits like Half Past Dead, Who's Your Caddy and Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, will direct, and he works from a screenplay by American Pie writer David H. Steinberg. It should be noted this production comes from Universal's 1440 Entertainment,...

Another day, another rom-com. Vanessa posted something about the film Miss Dial back last summer, following up on an item we had about the film in 2011, when the film was picked up by Phase 4 films for a multi-platform relase. Now it's set to open theatrically across the country on March 12th. Written and directed by David H. Well, this is until "one day she decides to...

Shrek’s feline philanderer finally gets his own starring vehicle with the eponymous Puss In Boots which sees the titular hero meet a swathe of fellow fairytale characters and a rather Batgirl-esque love interest on a quest to redeem himself and his good name in this prequel to the Shrek franchise.
The story sees Puss on a mission to relieve Jack and Jill (of “the hill” fame) of the magic beans they have stolen in order to grow the famous fairytale beanstalk and retrieve the goose that laid the golden egg so that he can return to the village where he grew up, repay the debt he owes, clear his name and finally live the classic “happily ever...

Paranormal Activity 3 dropped by Puss in Boots at weekend movie box office. It may have been Halloween, but you wouldn't have guessed it at the box office as an animated film now purrs in first place over a horror movie. Still, Paramount Pictures isn't complaining, holding the first, second and fourth positions. Puss in Boots debuted with $34 million, not overly impressive for an animated film in general, averaging $8,603 from 3,952 theaters. Pic features the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis, under the direction of Chris Miller, from the writing by David H. Steinberg, Brian Lynch, Tom Wheeler and Jon Zack. Daily Breakdown Over Halloween Weekend for Puss in Boots: - Friday: $9.6 million. - Saturday: $13.9 million. - Sunday: $10.47 million estimate. In second, Paranormal Activity 3 showed a 65% change, adding an estimated $18.3 million in its sophomore weekend at the box office, bringing the total cume for the...

Chicago – Animated family films have made a pact with their audience. For our participation – and extra 3D glasses fee – they deliver the latest in computer generated eye candy, familiar voice talent and heroes that always win while making pop culture references. Antonio Banderas is “Puss in Boots.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Expanding on the feline swashbuckler from the “Shrek” series of films, “Puss in Boots” is a decent exercise of the animated pact, but doesn’t offer anything new or particular exciting. The generated atmosphere is gorgeous, truly a miracle of the modern age, but the filmmakers probably think this is enough. It took four writers to sweat out the adventurous screenplay, only to fall back on litter box jokes and a greek chorus cat who offers the oh-no-you-didn’t aphorism.
Set before his Shrek adventures, Puss in Boots (voice of Banderas) is introduced in all his roguish ways, loving and leaving his feline companion.

Chicago – A media and admirer frenzy took place last week at the Kerasotes Icon theater in Chicago, where Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek walked the red carpet at the sneak preview for the upcoming film “Puss in Boots.” Both lent their voices to characters that are a spin-off from the “Shrek” series of animated films.
The Puss in Boots character, as voiced by Banderas, first appeared in “Shrek 2,” and got more screen time as the animated series went along. It is the combination of the suave interpretation of the character by Banderas and the comedy that the Shrek team gave the feline that made the role so popular. It almost was natural that there would be a spin-off, and that Salma Hayek would join the cast – as Kitty Softpaws.

Puss in Boots to claw up box office top spot. A great buffet of genres awaits viewers this week as Paramount Pictures' Puss in Boots preps to consume Halloween weekend.
