A first clip has been unveiled from Luna Carmoon’s feature debut “Hoard,” which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
In the film, set in 1984 London, 7-year-old Maria and her mother live in their own loving world built on sorting through bins and collecting shiny rubbish. One night, their world falls apart, and the film joins Maria a decade later, living with her foster mother. An older stranger, Michael, then enters their home, opening the door to past trauma, magic and madness.
“‘Hoard’ came from a place of venom; spite really is the great transformer. It was a story I was writing for just me, the world of ‘Hoard’ and its characters saved me truly,” Carmoon told Variety. “I never intended it to be seen … I was going to leave it at the bottom of my bed wrapped in string for the Newshopper and family to find to their shock and horror,...

Just two weeks ago, it was announced that Mackenzie Davis – whose credits include Terminator: Dark Fate, Blade Runner 2049, Black Mirror, Halt and Catch Fire, and Station Eleven – had joined the cast of the Blumhouse thriller Speak No Evil, a remake of a Danish film called Gæsterne. Now Deadline reports that Davis has another genre film in the works: a “twisted horror” film called The Damning of a Country Merchant. Davis will be starring in the film alongside Peter Sarsgaard of The Batman.
Matthew Rosenbaum has written the screenplay and will be making his feature directorial debut with The Damning of a Country Merchant, which is set in 1910 Indiana and centers on the patriarch of a rural mercantile family (Sarsgaard) whose way of life is suddenly disrupted by a charismatic industrialist who has entered into a secret affair with his wife (Davis). The Oscar winning Alicia Vikander eyes more action after Tomb Raider with Ben Wheatley's monster-hunter film, Freakshift.
Alicia Vikander is definitely in the midst of a moment after winning an Oscar for 2015’s The Danish Girl. Next set to appear as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, Vikander is certainly stepping deep into the world of action movies, and the tentative one that’s being lined up after that sounds even more interesting: as per Deadline, Vikander is in talks to star in Freakshift, a new Ben Wheatley action movie with horror elements.
Wheatley has also been on the rise in recent years with films like A Field in England, High-Rise, and next week's hotly anticipated Free Fire under his belt. While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.
Other notable VOD releases for October 2016 include The Windmill, The Unspoken, ClownTown, Fear, Inc., Vampyres, Halloweed, and Goddess of Love from Jon Knautz (The Shrine, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).

An unconventional love triangle and a bizarre killer are teased in the latest, very Nsfw trailer for Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler.
“This Los Angeles–set tale follows Big Ronnie, a man who runs a disco walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman named Janet comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also brings about the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent—soon dubbed “the Greasy Strangler.”
Flush your expectations down the toilet, because you have never seen a slasher film or a father-son comedy like this before. Writer/Director Jim Hosking has made an outrageously off-kilter feature film debut that is equal parts disgusting, offensive, and manically entertaining. Featuring performances by Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar, and Elizabeth De Razzo that are destined for cult status,...

Following its premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Jim Hosking’s The Greasy Strangler will be released in theaters and on VOD by FilmRise on October 7th. Ahead of its upcoming Us release, a new poster for the film has been unveiled, showing Big Ronnie and his son, Brayden, posing for an awkward family photo.

Director: Ben Wheatley
Writers: Ben Wheatley, Amy Jump
British director Ben Wheatley returns with his sixth feature, Free Fire, after amassing a wildly popular following thanks to is offbeat genre sensibilities with films like Kill List (2011) and Sightseers (2012). After the psychedelic A Field in England (2013) and his wildly underrated riff on Nicolas Roeg/Ken Russell territory with an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise (2015), Wheatley seems to be headed into even more idiosyncratic territory. We’re thrilled to see him already in post-production on another, a 1970s Boston set thriller about a gang war and a fight for survival within the confines of an abandoned warehouse. Wheatley collaborates once more with Amy Jump on the screenplay, their fifth feature together, while amassing a group of rising young stars in the cast.

While the frequently working Wheatley announced this would be his next film, it seems that filming was supposed to begin in late 2013 or early 2014. Knowing how rapidly he is able to complete his projects, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is ready for the fall, right after his version of the series “Ideal” starring Johnny Vegas has been completed. Whatever the scenario, this sounds like a return to more outlandish Wheatley territory after this year’s departure in experimental hallucinations with the inventive A Field In England.
Gist: An American sci-fi film, like “Hill Street Blues” with monsters and women cops.
Release Date: Wheatley is a festival darling, so if it’s ready by the latter end of the year, expect a possible out of competition slot somewhere.

Following its release in the UK last summer, Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England is finally about to get its stateside release at the start of next month.
Drafthouse Films is also launching a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release, taking a similar direction to the unique multi-platform release we saw here last year.
With its Us release right around the corner, Drafthouse has released a new trailer teasing just some of the chaos that ensues in Wheatley’s latest, along with an appropriately psychedelic poster designed by Jay Shaw to match. And in case you needed any more persuading, Martin Scorsese himself is quoted as a fan of the film.

Ben Wheatley’s latest film, fully funded by Film4’s digital arm Film4.0, sees the director visit the English Civil War with a tale of battle, alchemy and magic. Surreal, brutal and shot in beautifully stark black and white, the film has all the all the elements for which Wheatley has become renowned for, from the air of dread it manages to conjure up to the vein of the surreal that runs throughout.
So what was it about the English Civil War that appealed to Wheatley?
“It comes from wanting to make something about that point in history. I kind of had a tortuous route to get through – I’d been writing various versions of the script for about 10 years,” explained Wheatley...

To anyone who thinks that the film industry isn’t looking at new ways of reaching their audiences – and, really, you’d need to overlook everything that the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Kickstarter have been working on recently – let Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England be the persuading force to change your mind.
Wheatley’s anticipated follow-up to last year’s acclaimed Sightseers has long been a film we’ve been really looking forward to seeing. We’ve been curious as to when exactly we’d be seeing it this year. And now the official press release has revealed that the film will be the first ever movie in the UK to be released on the same day in cinemas, on television, on DVD, and on Video On Demand.
Amazing.
The Film4 co-production will be released into cinemas through Picturehouse Entertainment, the distribution arm of Picturehouse Cinemas, on 5th July.

A Field in England
Director: Ben Wheatley
Writer(s): Wheatley & Amy Jump
Producer(s): Claire Jones, Andrew Starke
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Julian Barratt, Reece Shearsmith, Michael Smiley
In three short years since his 2009 debut (Down Terrace), Ben Wheatley has quickly established himself as part of the new breed of smart, Brit auteurs – fabulously etching together horror genre items of a different vibe. Stylistically, A Field in England promises to be just as inventive as Kill List and his rod-tripper Sightseers, and that same ingenuity easily transfers over into his narratives. If you believe that behind every great man is an awesome wife, then writing partner Amy Jump certainly should be mentioned her for his creative and productive overdrive. When you include his work in The ABCs of Death, 2013 will give us a chance to see three back-to–back-to-back works from Wheatley. His following on both...

Following on the back of his success last year with Kill List, Ben Wheatley returns behind the camera to release Sightseers in the UK at the end of the month. Showing no signs of slowing down, the promising young writer-director has already finished up shooting his next film, A Field in England.
The 17th Century-set psychedelic horror was originally set to shoot early next year, but since the announcement came in September, Wheatley has already finished filming, and is now in editing, and Film4 have given us our first image from the film.

Chicago – Graphic violence is a double-edged sword. It can shock viewers into acknowledging the tragic nature of carnage so often belittled in mainstream cinema, yet it can also repel viewers straight out of the theater before the end credits roll. Ben Wheatley’s “Kill List” is far from the most violent film in recent memory, but its few instances of onscreen bloodshed are unbearably savage.
This makes the film a perfect fit for IFC Midnight, which has specialized in distributing ultra-grisly indies. “Kill List” is one of their better releases this year, but it lacks the emotional and psychological depth of a film like Justin Kurzel’s “The Snowtown Murders.” Whereas Kurzel’s fact-based tale was about people who seemed frighteningly human, Wheatley’s film centers on a group of characters so witless that audiences may find it difficult to become involved in their plight. “Kill List” is entertaining enough...

The last time we told you about Ben Wheatley's (Kill List, Sightseers) latest film, Freakshift, was back in May; and honestly, there really wasn't much to say. Today we have a couple of new details for you, but be warned - it's nothing earth-shattering.
According to Variety film shingle Lava Bear is in exclusive negotiations to acquire the monster action thriller Freakshift, which Wheatley will helm.
Co-written by Wheatley and Amy Jump, the film is set in a world where monsters rise from the ground and terrorize citizens when night falls. The Freakshift is a band of government-organized misfits and lawbreakers who hunt and kill the creatures for civic duty, sport, and money.
Rook Films' Andrew Starke, Claire Jones, and Lava Bear will produce. Katherine Butler will executive produce via the Film4 banner, which developed and co-financed the project. Freakshift marks Film4's third collaboration with Wheatley and Rook Films.
