Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

Usually, when people think of the greatest decade for action movies, the 80s are what they think of. After all, this is the era that gave us Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, the Rambo movies, and so many more. But, the nineties was just as important a decade, giving birth to just as many legends of the genre, and it was the last significant era for R-rated action flicks. But what are the best action movies of the 90s? It’s tough to say, but here are 10, plus an honourable mention, that we think we deserve a place in the pantheon.
Honourable Mention: Demolition Man:
When this came out in the fall of 1993, it wasn’t considered all that special. It apparently lost money at the box office, but within a few years, this Sylvester Stallone/ Wesley Snipes mashup became a major cult classic, and now it’s one of the...

Ok, a quick show of hands: How many of you actually knew there was a movie titled “I Am Vengeance” released in 2018? Wow, that many? Well, that’s probably why we now have a sequel, “I Am Vengeance: Retaliation,” even though it isn’t likely to reach beyond the niche audience of undiscriminating action fans who eagerly viewed its predecessor on digital and home video platforms.
Much like the original 2018 opus, “Retaliation” plays like a throwback to the era when similar low-budget fare routinely strained shelves at Blockbuster outlets, and provided gainful employment for such cult faves as Jeff Speakman, Gary Busey, Cynthia Rothrock and direct-to-video icon Wings Hauser. Here, the main attraction is Stu Bennett (aka WWE wrestler Wade Barrett), a taciturn tough customer who once again inhabits the lead role of John Gold, a British special forces soldier turned freelance mercenary turned self-employed vengeance seeker.

Growing up action movies were, for me, second only to horror flicks as my go to genre. I used to scour the pages of Impact for news on the latest films and then pre-order the VHS at my local video shop – because yes, back in the day you could actually pre-order a video rental and I Always had to be first to rent my most-anticipated flicks! I mention this only because it was back in that era that the action movie star was king. Starting out with the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, the VHS era gave birth to a myriad of action movie superstars: guys like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Jeff Speakman, Jeff Wincott and the queen of action films Cynthia Rothrock… all of whom carved out careers in what were – for the most part – direct to video films.

While gaps between classic horror films and their sequels have tested fans’ patience in the past, it’s hard to imagine anyone eagerly waiting for a follow-up to The Strangers. The sub-par bag-head home invasion horror from 2008 had the privilege of being granted a theatrical run back in the day but seemed unlikely to spawn a sequel then, let alone ten years later. What’s more surprising than a belated follow-up being green lit, is that it’s also debuting in cinemas and not being banished to online screening platforms or supermarket bargain bins next to VHS rips of Jeff Speakman’s Timelock or Wild Fishing with Henry Gilbey.
Thankfully, The Strangers: Prey at Night isn’t quite the derivative botch-job one would have expected considering the original’s insignificance and the genre’s tendency to emit cut-price cash-in/ franchise silage. The first act is robust with instant, albeit clichéd,...

From August 4th through August 6th, Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Con took over the Windy City, and Daily Dead was on hand for all the horror-fied festivities. Throughout all three days, this writer served as one of Flashback’s co-hosts, and brought back some highlights from several of the panels held over the course of the convention.
Below is the first part of our excerpts from the panel featuring the women of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakley. The trio discussed their careers at the point of being involved with the first film in the Nightmare franchise, how the project came about, and their experiences seeing Wes Craven’s landmark film for the very first time.

If there’s ever a phrase that will have me instantly reaching for my wallet it’s “a Scott Adkins film…” Honestly, nine times out of ten I will buy an Adkins film without so much as seeing a trailer. Why? Well because for me, Adkins is keeping the Dtv dream alive, picking up the action hard-man mantle from 90s pioneers like Jeff Speakman, Olivier Gruner, Gary Daniels and in particular Jeff Wincott, one of the only other true action heroes to have the same perfect blend of fighting skills, charisma and acting chops as Adkins.

Reading Chris Holt’s recent excellent feature on the death of the local video store, (as well as this week’s release of Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2) I got to thinking about my own experiences of traipsing along to my local video store in search of something obscure but exciting. During my mid to late teens it was all about straight to video martial arts films – my Dad had introduced me to Bruce Lee by way of The Big Boss and I had worked my way through a whole load of Jackie Chan, Seagal and Jcvd, before resorting to just picking up a video that looked like it contained a lot of fighting and seeing what it offered.
Needless to say, a lot of what I stumbled on was deeply, abidingly terrible. Lone Wolf McQuaid was pretty good, but Code of Silence was abysmal. Delta Force II and III were both excellent fun,...

I’ve confirmed that Mel Gibson and Antonio Banderas have joined The Expendables 3, the Millennium Entertainment pic that already picked up Harrison Ford to add to the cast that has begun to resemble the Old Timers Day game held annually at Yankee Stadium. Sylvester Stallone continues to bring in aging action muscle for the franchise he hatched back in 2010. Why Stallone and Millennium continue to ignore Jeff Speakman and Brian Bosworth is beyond me, and they seem to be about the only action heroes who haven’t joined the beefcake brigade. Is Sly saving them for a fourth movie?...

When Hell Horror ran this cast photo of the second of the web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy," I knew the moment had come: it was time to introduce those of you who weren't aware of it to one of the great martial arts comedies featuring Kadeem Hardison and a stolen Yakuza cyborg heart of the 90's.
"Drive."
"Drive" stars martial artist and sometimes Iron Chef Chairman Mark Dacascos, a performer who really should have broken out in a bigger way than he did in the late 90's and beginning of this decade. Sure, he's done not-great stuff like the live-action "Double Dragon" movie, but he's also the reason "Brotherhood of the Wolf" was such a great kick-in-the-chest piece of martial arts/horror/action back in the day.

It took him 20 years, but Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner has notched his first film to pass the $300 million worldwide gross mark. The Expendables 2 just crossed that threshold. The movie, which the company said has grossed over $53 million in China, has yet to open in Japan so that number will grow higher. Lerner, with partners Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort, formed the sales company Nu Image in 1992, and then Millennium Films in 1996. They will undoubtedly put together another Expendables installment (will Jeff Speakman finally get a call?), and they are exploring the feminine side of the action game: Millennium just hired Legally Blonde scribes Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith to write ExpendaBelles, Lerner brought in Mark Gill to raise the level of productions–let’s face it, there is some schlock in that library–and it certainly helps the cause when you put up that kind of gross on a $100 million budget.

Title: Point Blank Writer-director: Fred Cavaye Starring: Gilles Lellouche, Roschdy Zem, Gerard Lanvin, Elena Anaya The title Point Blank is one of those perfectly generic and innocuous film monikers that indicate “thrills” without any cumbersome specificity whatsoever. One hears it and immediately envisions a dozen or more well-worn video and DVD coverboxes – with Steven Seagal, Jeff Speakman or, now, the latest WWE superstar attempting to transition into acting, clutching a handgun and mean-mugging the viewer, all underneath a font that conveys skirmish and exploit. This is one of the reasons that it’s a somewhat strange fit with this French import — an action thriller yes, but hardly a nuance-free, vengeful...

When the first Expendables movie made $275 million worldwide despite a pretty violent R rating, there was no question that there would be a follow-up film. But with the star, writer and director of the first film, Sylvester Stallone, scaling back his involvement to just coming up with the story and kicking ass, who would be trusted to get all those explosions and one-liners on film?
Luckily, the guy who directed the ensemble action flick Con Air, Simon West, was available to take the gig. Since Con Air, West has directed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic and others, and was even an executive producer on Black Hawk Done, so he's well familiar with blowing shit up.

The Expendables was an enormous hit for Sylvester Stallone who spoke a while ago that fans can expect a sequel in the future. Audiences went in droves to see a lineup of 80's action stars that included Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and more. According to Stallone, it appears as if even more action stars will be making an appearance for the second round of 80's throwback action.
Screenrant is reporting that Bruce Willis is helping with casting and is, “going for all the marbles this time, and [is] going to get everybody in ['The Expendables 2']“. Stallone has even said that Steve Austin will be returning for the sequel despite his apparent demise in the first film.
Who would you like to see in the sequel? Jean-Claude Van Damme? Chuck Norris? Jeff Speakman? How about Cynthia Rothrock? We'll have to wait and see.

After waxing poetic about my love for The Expendables, and quite frankly, all things action yesterday I got to thinking about all of the different conventions that take place. After searching the Internet I found loads of different cons. Anime, Sci-Fi, Comic, Horror and more specifically, Star Trek and Twilight related conventions. I’ve been to two of the former and none of the latter…thank goodness. I can’t leave out mentioning the big daddy of cons, Comic Con. Sadly I haven’t had the opportunity to attend, but next year is going to be the year.
I Goggle’d, Yahoo’d and Bing’d my way through researching all of these different cons, and I couldn’t find a single con devoted strictly to action movies. Our writer Craig brought to my attention that there is something in North Carolina called ActionFest and that looks pretty darn cool.

The tracking was spot on this week as Expendables was looking to take down $35 million and become king of the box office its debut weekend against two other debuting films. Sly and his band of brothers made a nice dent in the box office with an estimated $35 million weekend. I'm sure a sequel will be announced soon. Sly wants to do one and I'm sure Lionsgate is happy with how this one did. Just get Van Damme and Jeff Speakman in the sequel, ok? I know Speakman hasn't done anything action on film in years but I'd love to see the perfect weapon come back and kick some butt.Eat Pray Love came in 2nd place with $23.7 million.
