A couple months ago, Prime Video announced that The Boys season 4 is set to start streaming on June 13th – and this season is getting started with a three episode premiere! The first three episodes will be available to watch as of June 13th, then the remaining five episodes will be released on a weekly basis, concluding with the epic season finale on July 18th. With two months to go until the premiere date, showrunner Eric Kripke has taken to social media to announce that the season 4 is completely finished now – and it may be the best season yet!
Kripke wrote, “As of today, The Boys season 4 is completely, totally, absolutely Done. I’m really grateful & so proud of this cast & crew. Could be our best yet. Can’t wait to unleash it onto the world.” He is obviously very proud of the new season, as he previously tweeted, “I was in post today,...

Could 2023 be the year of genre? Thanks to a pandemic that created a deep desire for escapist TV, there are more shows that fit into that box now than ever, many of which are eligible for Emmys this season. They include Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and “The Last of Us,” Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Disney+’s “Andor” and “The Mandalorian,” Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard,” Netflix’s “The Sandman” and AMC’s “Interview with the Vampire.”
Of the eight series that Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis has predicted will get a nomination in the drama category, three would fall into the sci-fi or fantasy field: “Game of Thrones” offshoot “House of the Dragon,” video game adaptation “The Last of Us” and critical darling “Yellowjackets.”

When Erin Moriarty reflects on “The Boys'” third season as a whole, the first thing that comes to mind is the powerful scene when her character, Starlight/Annie January, quits the superhero team known as The Seven. “Playing that character gave me so much … sympathy for everyone that we judge when we look at situations they’re in and come to harsh conclusions,” she tells me. “I think that you’ve got to respect the process she’s been through, even if it includes things that one would deem amoral.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Even though “The Boys” Season 3 streamed almost a year ago in June-July of 2022, this is my friendly reminder to TV academy members that it’s eligible for the upcoming 2023 Emmy Awards. “The Boys” is a classic example of a television show that continues to build momentum year after year, and it shouldn’t be discounted when marking your ballots in the coming months. After all, the third season was better than ever with new characters, deathly twists and naughty orgies.
The first season of the Amazon Prime Video comic book adaptation only nabbed a single Emmy nomination in 2020 for sound editing. But the show rebounded in 2021 with five bids for Season 2: drama series, writing (Rebecca Sonnenshine for “What I Know”), music & lyrics (Christopher Lennertz and Michael Saltzman for “Never Truly Vanish”), sound mixing and visual effects. After taking off the 2022 Emmy cycle, will “The Boys” be back in town...

Netflix had a big year in 2022, surpassing more than 223 million paid streaming subscribers globally, and there’s plenty on tap in 2023 to be excited about — including new seasons of “You” and “Shadow and Bone.”
However, the streamer also saw its first subscriber loss in over a decade in its second quarter in April, prompting massive budget cuts and the loss of multiple TV projects over the course of this year.
Below is a recap of the major Netflix shows canceled in 2022, from beloved series to shows that hadn’t even aired yet.

Crafting a compelling found-footage horror story can be tricky. The format can be exhausting if not used effectively, and the scares can only land when supported by a well-crafted story. The first season of Netflix's "Archive 81" managed to stick the landing by offering a taut puzzle-box mystery that incorporated the found footage format to strong effect. Unfortunately, the horror series was rudely canceled by Netflix, which had ended on a delicious cliffhanger, leaving fans of the show (and me) fuming.
There are several reasons for the show's popularity. Firstly, the series is based on the popular horror podcast of the same name, and the narrative weaves together a thrilling tale about lost tapes, cults, mysterious disappearances, and demonic activity. At the heart of "Archive 81" is a tale of radical empathy and compassion, in which the fates of Dan (Mamoudou Athie) and Melody (Dina Shihabi) are intertwined across space and time.

The 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Drama Writing has 211 submissions, which will once again result in seven nominees in this category, something that has been consistent since 2020. Before we dive into this year’s likely writing contenders, let’s remember that last year’s winner was “The Crown” (“War” by Peter Morgan) and the other nominees were “The Boys” (“What I Know” by Rebecca Sonnenshine), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (“Home” by Yahlin Chang), “Lovecraft Country” (“Sundown” by Misha Green), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 13: The Jedi” by Dave Filoni), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 16: The Rescue” by Jon Favreau) and “Pose”.
None of these shows will be in contention this year, as they have either concluded or did not air any new episodes in the eligibility timeline, so this category will have a whole new batch of nominees. “Better Call Saul,” “Ozark” and “Succession” took 6/7 slots in this category two years ago the last time they were eligible,...

"Archive 81" is no longer alive at Netflix. The streaming service confirmed that the show has been canceled after only a single season. “Archive 81” will not receive a second season on Netflix, TheWrap has learned.
The series, from creator Rebecca Sonnenshine, starred Mamoudou Athie as video archivist Dan Turner, who was restoring tapes in the present, originally shot by Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) in 1994 at the mysterious Visser apartment building.
In different timelines, both Dan and Melody uncover disturbing secrets about a destructive, demon-worshipping cult.
The series, which costarred Martin Donovan, Evan Jonigkeit, Julia Chan, Ariana Neal and Matt McGorry, was loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name.
Sonnenshine created the series and served as showrunner and executive producer. James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster also executive produced with Rebecca Thomas, Antoine Douaihy and Paul Harris Boardman.

TV Cancellations Photo Gallery: Shows Ending In 2022 & Beyond
The cancellation is somewhat surprising because Archive 81 did break into Nielsen and Netflix’s weekly Top 10 ratings for originals, and it also briefly shot to No. 1 on Netflix in the U.S. before being dethroned by the return of Ozark. With the streamer laser-focused on analyzing viewing versus cost in its renewal decisions, the number of eyeballs Archive 81 drew possibly did not meet the threshold Netflix had set for the series based on its budget.

The podcast version of “Archive 81” had to sculpt an entire world out of just dialogue, music, sound effects, and the occasional agonizing bit of silence, but the Netflix series adaptation uses its sound design as just one of the many tools with which to create its world. The TV adaptation’s sounds have the luxury of lurking beneath the strange occurrences at the Visser Apartments in the 1990s, captured first by grad student Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) and then decades later by archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), as he restores her tapes. Supervising sound editor Mark Relyea talked to IndieWire about “Archive 81” and its soundscape — including spoilers for the end of the show’s first season.

Halfway through the very scary 4th episode of Netflix's surprise smash "Archive 81," an artist named Cassandra (Kristin Griffith) glibly observes, "[all humans] are performers — in one way or another." I concur, Cassandra! Humans learn to walk, talk, and do almost everything through imitation. All the world's a stage. What Rebecca Sonnenshine's show terrifyingly posits is that the act of performance opens anyone up to spirits that might move through them — creative or otherwise.

Newbies for the week were the third season of “Too Hot to Handle,” which came in third place with 41 million hours viewed,...

This article contains spoilers for Archive 81.
Like all great horror stories, Netflix’s Archive 81 starts off small.
Film conservator Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) is approached by a mysterious corporate benefactor, Virgil Davenport (Martin Donovan) to restore some tapes from the ‘90s. Somehow this simple job escalates into a pulse-pounding supernatural mystery that incorporates a Roaring Twenties era demonic cult, mold that bends time and space, and an honest-to-goodness Lovecraftian horror.
It’s easy to see why Archive 81 has caught on with viewers. The show spent several days in the number one spot on Netflix’s “Top Ten” feature before Ozark bumped it down to two. This story, based on a podcast of the same name, slowly unspools into something properly huge. By the time Dan wakes up in the ‘90s in the final moments of season 1 to watch MTV’s Kurt Loder announce Kurt Cobain’s death,...

‘Archive 81’ Star Dina Shihabi on That Family Secret, How Melody and Dan Could Connect in a Season 2
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of Netflix’s “Archive 81.”
Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) spends the majority of the first season of Netflix’s “Archive 81” separated from the show’s other key characters, given that the camcorder-toting Visser resident’s story takes place in the ’90s and her work is being studied in the present day by archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie).
But in the final moments of the “Archive 81” Season 1 finale, Melody becomes a literal blast from the past, as she is dragged through a portal from The Otherworld dimension she has been trapped in for decades by cult-leader Samuel (Evan Jonigkeit) and falls out in front of her long-lost mother, Julia Bennett/Bobbi (Jacqueline Antaramian), and Dan’s best friend, Mark (Matt McGorry). Samuel suspiciously doesn’t come through with her and Dan is nowhere to be seen,...

“The Witcher,” “Stay Close,” “Cobra Kai,” “Emily in Paris,” and “Manifest” all retained their dominion on Netflix’s English-language TV Top 10 list for the second full week of 2022, while the sixth season of makeover show “Queer Eye” fell through the cracks, leaving room for newcomers “Cheer” (Season 2) and “Archive 81” to join the ranks.
“Cheer” was No. 5 on the list with roughly 29.1 million hours viewed, and horror drama “Archive 81,” from showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine, landed in the seventh slot with 22.2 million hours viewed. The suspenseful series stars Dina Shihabi, Mamoudou Athie, Matt McGorry, Ariana Neal, Julia Chan, Evan Jonigkeit and Martin Donavan, and involves a deadly mystery involving a cult, arson and a disappeared director. “Stay Close,” the limited thriller series based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, climbed to the No. 1 spot with 53.72 million hours viewed.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of Netflix’s “Archive 81.”
After eight episodes of slowly unraveling its cult-centric mysteries and building up its mold-laced mythology, Netflix’s “Archive 81” concluded its first season with a twist that flipped the tape over for a potential second season: Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) crossed into The Otherworld controlled by the demon/god Kaelego to rescue Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi). On their way out, Dan was shoved back into the post-Visser-apartment-building-fire timeline in 1994 New York City, while Melody was dragged by cult-leader Samuel (Evan Jonigkeit) through the present-day door Dan had entered.
And yes, Dan really has been blasted into the past, and is not trapped in The Otherworld being fooled with another one of Kaelego’s close-enough-to-reality fantasies, according to “Archive 81” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine.

In a landscape filled with projects of portentous self-seriousness, perhaps there’s something refreshing about a project that stands proudly in its willingness to simply attempt to be deliriously, dizzily nuts.
So it is with “Archive 81,” a new “found-footage” horror series on Netflix executive produced by “The Boys” and “The Vampire Diaries” vet Rebecca Sonnenshine and by horror impresario James Wan. Like Wan’s 2021 horror film “Malignant,” “Archive 81” has a powerful belief in its ability to entertain that — at times — has the power to push back inconsistencies and inanities. More frequently, though, audiences will likely be left cold and a little bored by a series that finds little to say amidst its endless ante-upping.

It's been a long wait, but we finally have a premiere date for The Boys Season 3.
The highly anticipated Prime Video drama's premiere date was leaked by the show's Brazilian social media page.
There was a whole announcement video, so we're inclined to believe this video will arrive on the other Prime Video social media pages today.
As for the premiere date, it is June 3, 2022.
This means fans will have been without some of the baddest superheroes on TV for around 18 months.
It's unclear at this stage whether Prime Video will be launching all episodes at once instead of the weekly rollout adopted for The Boys Season 2.
The third season pickup was revealed ahead of the premiere of the sophomore season.

When it comes to living in New York City, few things are as scary as real estate. But in Netflix’s “Archive 81,” premiering January 14 on the streamer, it’s not the rent or the rodents that terrify. It’s “pioneers of the imagination,” according to the trailer.
At least, that’s the impression given in the series’ first trailer. Based on the three-season podcast of the same name, the upcoming horror thriller finds a video archivist Dan (Mamoudou Athie) attempting to restore VHS tapes damaged in a fire. And as everyone from “The Ring” to “V/H/S/” knows, there’s nothing more frightening than what lies on analog.
Sure enough, Dan is able to restore some tapes just enough to become enmeshed in documentarian Melody’s 1994 exploration of a NYC apartment building, where some very strange things are happening, including mask-wearing, modern dance, and some very scary tenant meetings. Not...

"There's something... in this place." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for an eerie supernatural thriller series titled Archive 81, produced by James Wan and showrun by Rebecca Sonnenshine. The mysterious horror series is about an archivist hired to restore a collection of tapes, who finds himself reconstructing the work of a filmmaker and her investigation into a dangerous cult. Sonnenshine explains her inspiration for the premise: "I'm obsessed with mystery box shows, the kind that lead us down a rabbit hole into a strange, dark world. Archive 81 is a character-driven, deeply emotional story about the nature of art, faith, and the search for identity -- all wrapped up in a frayed blanket of existential dread. The show also gave this film geek the chance to unearth all sorts of forgotten media formats as found footage, which results in a unique, visually-textured story that is both beautiful and terrifying.

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming horror series “Archive 81,” which draws upon nostalgia for the videotape era of the 1990s to weave a chilling tale that plays out across dual timelines.
Loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name, “Archive 81” begins in present day with a character named Dan (Mamoudou Athie) being hired by a shadowy organization to restore video tapes that were damaged in a fire 25 years ago. As Dan restores the tapes in a remote location (“for his security” he’s assured), he witnesses the story of a woman named Melody (Dina Shihabi) who begins videotaping residents of an odd apartment building to create an oral history, only to discover something incredibly strange about the building and its inhabitants.

Just as Disney Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video are revving up their fantasy, horror and sci-fi series slates for winter 2021-2022 debuts, Netflix is touting the abundance of genre series headed to the streamer.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced premiere details for a slew of “geeky” shows, as well as returning fan-favorites like “Locke & Key” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
“In my ten years at Netflix, it’s been thrilling to see the dropped jaws, the all-caps tweets/the hilarious memes and the passionate theories inspired by these once-in-a-lifetime moments,” Friedlander wrote in a blog post. “Genre stories have the power to transport us to new universes like the Upside Down in ‘Stranger Things,’ teach us new vocabulary like ‘The Witcher’ and, most importantly, unite us in our shared love of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, anime and everything in between.

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.
It was a quiet ceremony for Marvel Studios, which was making its Primetime Emmy awards debut thanks to Disney+’s WandaVision. Though the series didn’t win any hardware Sunday night,...

The Emmy-nominated second season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” featured a knock-down-drag-out sex scene between (formerly secret) Nazi superhero Stormfront (Aya Cash) and leader of the Supes of the Seven Homelander (Antony Starr) that looked very realistic — you know, as far as mid-air superhero intercourse goes — thanks to the show’s VFX team and the decision to treat it more like a stunt scene than a sex scene.
“It’s wild. The special effects are bonkers on this show,” Cash said during TheWrap’s Emmy Screening Series panel for “The Boys” on Wednesday, which featured the Season 2 star and executive producer and writer Rebecca Sonnenshine in conversation with TV reporter Jennifer Maas. “They’re so well done and it’s amazing to watch back, because I don’t tend to like to watch myself, but I loved watching ‘The Boys,’ because there is so much magic on top...

“You wait your whole career for everything to come together the way that this one has, and a lot of it is luck,” admitted The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke of the acclaim achieved by the Amazon Prime Video series based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s hardcore, satirical, political and extremely poignant comic series. “The right subject matter, that has a lot of different layers and depth to it, [and] that happens to be talking about the exact second we’re living in.”
Riding high and with its third season deep in production, The Boys, executive produced by Kripke, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the upcoming Emmys, as well as in several more categories including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for Rebecca Sonnenshine’s work on the Season 2 finale.

Nominated for Outstanding Drama Series along along with four other nominations, Amazon Prime’s The Boys, created by Eric Kripke, follows a group of vigilantes led by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) as they fight the corrupt “supes” led by Homelander (Anthony Starr). Season 2 introduces Stormfront (Aya Cash), a charismatic new superhero with a wicked sadistic side.
The Season 2 finale, titled “What I Know,” is a nominee in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category. The episode brings the events of the season to a close as the Butcher and the Boys attempt to save Becca’s (Shantel VanSantan) son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), from the clutches of Homelander and Stormfront. It follows the planning and execution of the rescue mission, with twists and turns along the way.

Like the Emmys’ Best Drama Directing category, there have not been a lot of individual female winners in Best Drama Writing. Only five solo women have ever won before — slightly better than the three female drama directing champs — but just like the directing race this year, there are three chances for another woman to join the drama writing winner’s circle.
Yahlin Chang (“Home” from “The Handmaid’s Tale“), Misha Green (“Sundown” from “Lovecraft Country”) and Rebecca Sonnenshine (“What I Know” from “The Boys”) are all individually nominated this year for their scripts. There are other two female nominees, Janet Mock and Our Lady J, but they share their bid for the “Pose” series finale with co-writers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuck and Steve Canals. The other nominees are solo dudes: Peter Morgan (“War” from “The Crown”), Jon Favreau (“Chapter 16: The Rescue” from “The Mandalorian”) and Dave Filoni (“Chapter 13: The...

While celebrating The Boys‘ five Emmy nominations on Tuesday, creator Eric Kripke teased the Amazon drama’s third season, as well as an upcoming spinoff.
Kripke said he is “a little over three fourths” of the way through production on Season 3. He added that the new season represents “the hardest production year of anything [he’s] ever done, by a mile.”
While the first two seasons of the superhero show spoke to the challenges facing “America in this exact minute,” the upcoming season will look to the past.
It will specifically explore “the last 50, 60 years of American history, and all the factors that led us to where we are now,” via Jensen Ackles’ character Soldier Boy, who’s been a superhero since World War II. “Through his eyes, we’re able to explore a little bit of the history of Vought [International]—and through that, the satirical history of our country, issues like toxic masculinity and legacy,...

The second season of Amazon Studios’ Eric Kripke-created superhero series The Boys based on the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson only gained in momentum and swagger. Debuting in September, the eight-episode sophomore season nearly doubled the Season 1 worldwide audience (+89%) in just its first two weeks, and even got a shout-out from former President Barack Obama to boot.
The success quickly spawned a Season 3 renewal, with Amazon also at work on a spinoff set at America’s only college exclusively for YA superheroes. The spinoff is being described as “part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.”
But back to Season 2, which saw the vigilantes The Boys – Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara...
