According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Osborne has been tapped to direct an animated adaptation of Jeff Smith’s award-winning comic book series Bone. Osborne is the director behind Kung Fu Panda and the recent Little Prince, and the THR story adds that he’ll be co-writing the script with Artemis Fowl author Adam Kline. The original books were about three Bone cousins (Fone Bone, Phoncible Bone, and Smiley Bone) who were exiled from their home in Boneville and cross paths with dangerous and fantastical creatures.
In a statement to THR, Osborne explained that Bone is “very special and unconventional because it blends elements together that you don’t necessarily expect,” including “little comic characters and epic high-stakes fantasy adventure.” He also says his movie will “[push] animated storytelling into exciting and different areas.” It’s unclear if “animated” means traditional cartoon-style animation or Kung Fu Panda-style CG ...

Jeff Smith’s Bone was the 10th most challenged book in 2013 according to a recently released American Booksellers Foundation list. The news comes as Banned Books Week kicks off on Sunday.
Graphic novels will gain the spotlight in this year’s awareness campaign according to Judith Platt, chair of the Banned Books Week National Committee, She said, “This year we spotlight graphic novels because, despite their serious literary merit and popularity as a genre, they are often subject to censorship.”
Smith illustrated the cover to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s Banned Books Week Handbook.

Is reading comics genetic? Is there a gene that dictates whether or not you’re going to be a comics lover?
I don’t remember when I first fell in love with reading comics. Hell, with reading, period. Just got off of the phone from my mom, who said that by the time I was in kindergarten I always had my nose in a book, which puts me at about four years old. She also said that I was reading at the third grade level
“What about before kindergarten, Mom?”
“You would go to our bookshelves and pull out a book and turn the pages and talk to yourself as if you were reading.”
“Was I?”
“I don’t know, I don’t remember. Oh, and you loved to look at the illustrations.”
“You mean picture books?”
“No, I mean the illustrations in Last Of The Mohicans and Alice In Wonderland and The Three Musketeers.

New York Comic Con
With events like the Panda Cosplay Party and “The Avengers” panel session with Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston it’s no wonder event organizers are expecting over 100,000 attendees at the 2011 New York Comic Con, which runs from October 13-16. The east coast popular culture convention will run in conjunction with the New York Anime Festival but is not affiliated with San Diego Comic Con.
Thursday’s “kick-off concert” will feature guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and DJ Z-Trip.

Cliché: a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty, especially when at some time it was considered distinctively forceful or novel.
With Hollywood producing so many movies ever year, it is no surprise that they are often full of clichés. Jeff Smith created this montage under the Bottoms Up Productions label for acclaimed movie blog FilmDrunk.com, showing clips of some of the biggest movie clichés from a total of 102 films. The list of films are below the video. Enjoy!

Seems like the inebriated geniuses over at FilmDrunk are on a roll… or is that a bender? After recently taking on the ridiculous overuse of "Jack" and "Rose" in "Titanic," they've set their sites on a hoary old chestnut: "You just don't get it, do you?"
You might have heard that once or twice in your day-to-day life, but with their new video editor Jeff Smith has found more than 100 films that use the line, and the eight-minute video does not get old due to the sheer odd assortment of random flicks they've used.
Due to their tireless, obsessive search they've shown the clichéd phrase spans everything from action, drama, comedy, animation, arty foreign flicks, badly-dubbed Asian crime movies, etc. No movie is immune, regardless of quality, be it The Rock in "Tooth Fairy" or Charlie Sheen in Best Picture-winner "Platoon." There's just no cure for not getting' it.

The ongoing black & white, independent comic book series "Rasl", created by Jeff Smith in 2008, has now been set for development with producer Lionel Wigram ("Sherlock Holmes").
The comic book series follows art thief 'Rasl', who jumps to parallel universes in attempts to steal parallel paintings, but soon runs into dangerous scenarios as he is pursued by the government.
Written/drawn in a 'sci-fi noir' style, "Rasl" draws influences from real life events, people and places in addition to Southwestern Native American culture and hardboiled crime fiction.
The central story is narrated extensively through Rasl's thoughts, providing flashbacks to tell the story of his past.

If you will be in the Washington, DC area this weekend you should consider hitting the Small Press Expo, right outside DC in Bethesda, MD. It's an annual convention celebrating the little guys in comics. You won't really see Marvel or DC represented here; smaller companies like Top Shelf and Fantagraphics regularly set up vending tables at the event. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund will be represented as well. The exhibitors will include everything from writers and artists who have managed to get published by one of the bigger small presses to little guys who have gotten lucky enough to do a smaller project for one of the Big Two to people who had an idea they put down on paper then went to Kinko's in the middle of the night to xerox and staple copies together themselves. In years past people such as Frank Miller, Jeff Smith, Tony Millionaire,...

It's been a while since our last update on "The Goon" movie front, but that's because creator Eric Powell has been busy planning his horror-noir hero's return to comics — both the print and digital kind.
Two "Goon" tales his the iPhone comics world today: The celebrated graphic novel "Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker" and the special one-shot story "The Goon" #7, featuring Hellboy. Later this year, Powell will return to the universe he created with a new, three-issue miniseries based on one of his most tragic characters, the mysterious Buzzard, and eventually follow that up with a return to regular creative duties on "The Goon" comic book series.
MTV News caught up with Powell to chat about The Goon's debut on the iPhone, and what else he has planned for the Goon when the regular series returns.
MTV: "The Goon"... on the iPhone. This is... unexpected.
Eric Powell: [Laughs] It's interesting.

The Molting #1 (of 12)
“Chapter 1: Guilty Susie”
Writer/Illustrator: Terrance Zudnich (Scary Stud of the Year 2008)
Colorist: Brian Johnson
Designer/Letterer: Oceano Ransford
Indie comics is, to be blunt, a sucker’s game these days. The days of Dave Sim and Jeff Smith are long gone. The Direct market contracts more and more every year, plenty of small scale titles are fighting for catalog space with no way to beat the stranglehold Diamond Distributors holds on the thousands of comic stores left in America. To self-publish, and self-distribute, takes a certain sort of madness, or major balls. Not to mention serious cabbage...
Terrance Zudnich is either crazy or has major balls, and has probably got some disposable income. The co-creator/co-star of Repo! The Genetic Opera (and veteran storyboard artist) has written, drawn, self-published (in color!), and self-distributed the first issue in what promises to be a 12-issue “portrait of...
