The past year has been an especially harsh one for the entertainment industry in terms of well-known personalities who have passed away. Today's news that actor Robert Vaughn has died hits Cinema Retro especially hard and this writer in particular. He died from a battle with leukemia and was surrounded by his family in his final moments. I first met Robert in 1983 at a press conference in New York in which he and David McCallum promoted their forthcoming TV movie "Return of The Man From U.N.C.L.E." I've remained friends with them ever since and shared many an enjoyable conversation. Robert was an early supporter of Cinema Retro and contributed to numerous issues, most recently issues #33 and #34 in which he was interviewed by writer Steve Rubin about the dramatic occurrences in making the 1969 WWII film "The Bridge at Remagen...

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

HollywoodNews.com: Alicia Keys is producing a Broadway play. Why not? She’s conquered pop music, that’s for sure. The play, “Stick Fly,” will star Ruben Santiago Hudson, Mekhi Phifer (“ER”), Tracie Thoms, and Dule Hill (from the show “Psych”). Lydia Diamond wrote the play, which will be directed by Kenny Leon. Santiago-Hudson is one of the best actors of his generation, so this is particularly exciting.
That Alicia has gotten involved in this also shows how interesting her career has become. The lead producers are Nelle Nugent, Alicia Keys, Samuel Nappi, Reuben Cannon, Sharon A. Carr/Patricia Klausner, Huntington Theatre Company, Dan Frishwasser, Charles Salameno in association with Joseph Sirola & Eric Falkenstein. “Stick Fly” opens December 8th at the intimate Cort Theater on West 48th St.

Joe is a veteran of the big screen, TV (a recurring guest-star role in Hawaii 5-0, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart) and Broadway. Regular readers of Cinema Retro are well-acquainted with Joe Sirola, the star of stage and screen who is also known as The Voice-over King. Joe has been the voice behind countless high profile commercials over the years, but he's just landed a high profile gig as Sluggy Patterson, the fictional character who allegedly created the legendary game of Punchdub, which revolves around Volkswagens. For decades, people have punched another person in the arm whenever they spot a Vw on the road. The company has now turned this phenomenon into a clever marketing plan and it's the centerpiece of Vw's TV commercials. Joe Sirola has thus far recorded four ads that appear on the Vw web site in which he plays Sluggy, a crusty senior citizen who describes the rules...

The best of enemies: Joe Sirola and David McCallum in The Napoleon's Tomb Affair episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. By Lee Pfeiffer
Regular readers of Cinema Retro magazine know about actor Joe Sirola's remarkable career through his periodic columns for our publication. In addition to appearing in hundreds of movies, plays and TV series, Joe is also the toast of the town in New York City, due to his exclusive annual party to celebrate the blooming of his rose garden in his penthouse garden just off Central Park. Joe's been throwing these parties for decades, and in doing some research on an article, I came across a New York Daily News society column from 1967 that touted the party as the social event of the month! The tradition is in good form, as evidenced by Joe's latest soiree, which took place last week.As usual, the weather was superb,...
