You can never quite be sure what you're going to get from a Yuthlert Sippapak film - the fiercely talented and independently minded director constantly bouncing off in new directions from project to project and, indeed, often within the same project. And so it is that two trailers in to the ad campaign for his upcoming Buppha Ratree: Haunting In Japan I have only the faintest idea what is coming with the latest installment of his most popular creation. Sippapak's horror comedy franchise took the world stage when the first blood soaked installment premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival and while all have been some sort of horror-comedy hybrid the variation from film to film has been dramatic. the...

Arriving on the international scene as part of the leading edge of the Thai film explosion of the late 90s and early 2000s, Yuthlert Sippapak may not have found the international success of contemporary directors Prachya Pinkaew, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang or Wisit Sasanatieng - his quirky and seemingly omnipresent sense of humor keeping him in a rather more limited box - but Sippapak has proven to be one of the most successful of the lot at home while building a loyal cult around the globe with his continuous genre mashups. And he is now returning to one of his earliest successes while,, typically, subverting the entire exercise. Sippapak's first big success came with Buppha Rahtree, a blood drenched 2004 ghost story set in a Thai apartment...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

What’s the deal with these anthologies? Like I said in a previous article, I’m not the biggest fan of this sort of storytelling, yet here I am, talking about another one that’s caught my attention. Below you’ll find a trailer and a poster for director Yuthlert Sippapak’s upcoming Thai horror flick “Heaven and Hell”. The film, which is comprised of three separate tales, deals with the spooky things that sometimes occurs on CCTV. Again, if Asian horror movies about girls with long black hair are your arch enemies, then I’d advise skipping this one altogether. That’s just me, looking out for you. After all, the last thing I want to do is lead you on. “Heaven and Hell” invades Thai theaters on July 11th,...

Prolific Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak returns to the big screen with gritty horror Heaven And Hell. The director of the Rahtree series contributes two parts to the three episode horror anthology and it is clearly that the helmer has put aside his normal playful genre mashing to instead play things straight and dark.Though there are no subtitles on the trailer there really aren't any needed ... the variety store sequence, in particular, is perfectly effective no matter what. When you think international horror, some specific countries come to mind, certainly Italy, Japan, France, Korea…but Thailand? Not normally a hotbed of horror, but we've got two films to tell you about coming from Southeast Asia.
The first film is entitled Heaven and Hell, and it's an anthology ghost story film created by Yuthlert Sippapak and Tiwa Moeithaisong containing three short stories, "Heaven 11", "Nell No. 8" and "Ghost Legacy". The film is scheduled for a July 2012 release. Check out the trailer below.
Also coming out of Thailand is the zombie movie Dead Bite. Produced by Phra Nakorn Film Company and directed by Apisit Opasaimlikit, Dead Bite stars Opasaimlikit, Natee Aekwijit, Suranan Chumtaratorn, Kittipong Khamsat, Nattawat Srimawk and Witchapan Narkprasom. The mysterious trailer for Dead Bite is also below.
Thanks to horror tipster Avery G for the heads-up on these two movies. Look for more info on these films as it becomes available.

One of Thailand's most prolific and diverse talents, director Yuthlert Sippapak is best known outside of Thailand's borders as a horror director thanks to the success of the Rahtree films but his filmography is far, far more diverse than that. With films ranging from small indie dramas to high octane action comedies, there is virtually no genre that Sippapak has left untouched and - in many cases - he delights in jamming them together within a single film.As always seems to be the case Sippapak has multiple projects on the go for 2012 but the most intriguing appears to be Fatherland. Seeming to take the religious and cultural diversity of Thailand as a starting point, Fatherland looks to be Sippapak's first big, serious issue...

Thai writer-director Yuthlert Sippapak caught my attention with his bizarre genre-bending horror comedy Rahtree: Flower Of The Night back in 2003 and has long enjoyed plenty of love on these pages, not least for his recent one-two punch of Friday Killer and Saturday Killer. Before completing his Killer Trilogy however, Yuthlert brings us Bangkok Kung Fu, surely pitched as a big budget crowd-pleasing action fantasy, packed with good-looking young stars and kick-ass action. The story revolves around a group of four young boys who were abducted from their families, crippled by an evil gangster and then sent out onto the streets to beg for money. However, taking a young girl with them, the boys manage to escape and seek refuge with a Shaolin master, who trains...

Director Yuthlert Sippapak’s upcoming action/comedy “Bangkok Kung Fu” doesn’t look like the sharpest tack in the cinematic junk drawer, but it certainly looks like a lot of fun. And when you’re dealing with a motion picture called “Bangkok Kung Fu”, entertainment is really all you’re looking for. Below you’ll find a trailer and a few nifty new posters for the flick, a combination that should, in theory, increase your interest in the film by at least twenty-five percent. Individual results may vary. Here’s what you get in terms of characters and story: Five kids fled from a mafia who abused them as beggars. They ended up meeting the great kung fu master who adopted them and taught them how to fight. Now, the kids are grownups and become the magnificent five kung fu fighters who have only one mission: to avenge the mafia who destroyed their lives.

The release date for Yuthlert Sippapak’s Action comedy Bangkok Kung Fu has changed more times than we’ve had hot dinners, so while we’ve got it pinned down for two whole minutes we’ll take a moment to have a gander at the new poster for the film. This week its set to open locally in Thailand on September 1st, but considering its broad appeal we’d be very surprised if it doesn’t get snapped up somewhere internationally for release, very soon. They're young! They're pretty! They're superpowered kungfu fighters in Bangkok! Thailand's Yuthlert Sippapak is surely one of the busiest directors on the face of the planet, a restless talent moving from genre to genre and studio to studio and - more often than not - mashing styles and genres together into bizarre combinations.Sippapak has received a lot of attention internationally lately for his Killers Trilogy but having wrapped up both Friday Killer and Saturday Killer he took a break from the project to create action comedy Bangkok Kungfu. It's a highly stylized action piece with loads of wire assisted powers and laced with enormously broad comedy. The first trailer is freshly on the scene, check it below....

Friday Killer
Directed by Yuthlert Sippapak
Thailand, 2009
The first part of a trilogy (followed by, you guessed it, Saturday Killer and Sunday Killer) Friday Killer is an odd hodge-podge of allusion and genre bending that very nearly clicks fully together in the end.
Pay Uzi (Thep Po-ngam) is a professional hitman. He’s old, small, fresh out of prison, and not particularly precise with a gun. His name comes from his penchant for spraying his targets with automatic Uzi bullets rather than a singular telescoped sight ala your stereotypical movie assassin. Pay only kills on Friday because a Buddhist monk once told him to do so.
A giant governmental conspiracy greets Pay when he first leaves the prison yard in the form of a knife to the stomach. Someone wants him dead. Unfortunately for Pay, his daughter, who doesn’t know she’s his daughter, also wants him dead because...

There’s a new, full trailer in town for Yuthlert Sippapak’s latest “Killer” film, “Friday Killer”. By the looks of things, this installment is moving away from the comedic elements of the earlier films like “Killer Tattoo”. It could be a result of the way the trailer is cut together, and perhaps there are some funny bits hiding in there someplace, but from look, “Friday Killer” appears to be a grim, straight forward tale of crime and revenge. Here’s a synopsis: “Friday Killer” is the story of Pae Uzi, aka The Eagle of Chantaburi, a professional hit-man who was just been set free from prison. After his release, he learns for the first time he has a daughter Dao. The tables are turned on Pae when his daughter tries to kill him, because she thinks he killed the only father that she ever knew. No word on a release date yeat,...

September last year Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak (‘Buppha Rahtree’) introduced us to the oddball world of ‘Saturday Killer,’ following the exploits of Tee Rifle an Assassin who kills for money to cure his erectile dysfunction, now Sippapaks back with the follow up film titled (yes you guessed it) Friday Killer and we’ve a plotline to read and new posters to see. Synopsis: Friday Killer is the story of "Pae Uzi" aka "The Eagle of Chantaburi", a professional hit-man who was just been set free from prison. Think of a country that would be most likely to come up with the oddball premise of a comedy movie revolving around the story of a gunman who kills for money to cure his erectile dysfunction, and you’d perhaps picked Japan? Nah, try Thailand. A new length trailer is out for Yuthlert Sippapak's (‘Buppha Rahtree’) latest creation Saturday Killer, which follows the bizarre exploits of “impotent” hitman Tee Rifle in his quest for cash, and the love of fellow hitwoman Chris Styer. From the looks of the trailer that love is somewhat unrequited, in fact we think it’s safe to say, she hates his guts. Saturday Killer opens in Thailand September 30th. Trail at the link.

Nobody mashes genres together like Thailand's Yuthlert Sippapak. Absolutely nobody. And while his films often struggle to find international audiences thanks to his very localized style of comedy he has directed a fistful of big hits in Thailand while developing a loyal cult abroad.
What's next for the director of Buppah Rahtree, The Ghost of Valentine, Killer Tattoo and Pattaya Maniac? Well, after shooting a pair of back-to-back Rahtree sequels he's upped the ante even farther with a trio of hitman pictures pairing popular comedians with beautiful young starlets and giving each a slight variation on theme.
Named after days of the week - Friday Killer, Saturday Killer and Sunday Killer - they are, oddly, being released out of order with Friday Killer being judged too serious to properly introduce the set despite having won the top prize at this year's Phuket Film Festival. One of the most unpredictable and wildly diverse directors in Thailand, Buppah Rahtree director Yuthlert Sippapak has spent his entire career skipping through genres with a string of independently produced features that have won him an audience around the world. Yuthlert's dance card is mighty full right now but the first to hit screens will be the films in his upcoming Killers trilogy. Up first, Friday Killers.
The basic hook on these films is the pairing of veteran comedians with young starlets, Friday Killers matching Thep Po-ngam - who worked with Yuthlert on Killer Tattoo - with Ploy Jindachote, the lead of Yuthlert's Ghost of Valentine. Thep plays an aging hitman released from prison only to find out that a) he has a daughter b) she is also a hired killer and c) he's her next target.

There can never be enough films about hitmen! Especially if one half of the assassins shown in these films is female and wears tight leather suits or short hot pants while pursuing their daily deadly business like in The Killers Trilogy (Meu Puen 3 Pak) coming from Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak.
The trilogy will consist of the drama Friday Killers, the romance Saturday Killers and the comedy Sunday Killers, and star Thep Po-ngam, Ploy Jindachote, Nong Cha Cha Cha, Cris Horwang, Kotee Aramboy and Pitchanart Sakhakorn.

Ratings History: Opening in theaters in Thailand this past weekend, Yuthlert Sippapak's Buppah Rahtree 3.2: Rahtree's Revenge made history as "the first Thai film to be classified under Thailand's new motion-picture ratings system," reports Wise Kwai at his Thai Film Journal. The latest installment of a series that began with one of my favorite comedy / horror films of all time, Rahtree's Revenge is "suggested only for viewers aged 18 and older." Wise Kwai points out that Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds probably has the honor as the first film from any country to be rated under the new Thai system.

This caught us somewhat unawares, as we weren’t expecting another - if at all -so soon! The long running Thai horror “Buppah Rahtree” series is to get yet another instalment with Rahtree’s Revenge a direct sequel to Rhatree Reborn, released back in April. Yuthlert Sippapak is again at the helm, as the story vengeful ghost of Buppha and her love struck cartoonist continues. As with much of the series this latest instalments features the same bizarre blend of bloody gore, mixed with a liberal sprinkling of over the top Thai slapstick. Ah, yes ... they’ve been keeping this one fairly quiet so far but the cat is out of the bag now. Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak is returning to the film that made his name, with a third installment of the Buppah Rahtree franchise due to hit screens in early April. The first installment played things straight, the second put a very comic spin on things. And for the third? Well, Yuthlert just can’t resist toying with expectations ... The teaser plays out in two halves, the first giving the character a return to the hard edge that made the first film a success. The second half? Well, let’s just say that Yuthlert seems to have taken the whole ‘ghost-reborn’ motif literally and gone and re-cast his titular ghost as a tiny little knife wielding girl ... very fun! Check it below the break.
