In the series premiere of Apple TV+’s Dark Matter, a former physicist is abducted into an alternate version of his life by a masked man who’s freakishly close to him. And it only gets weirder from there.
In the first episode (two are currently available to stream), we meet Jason (The Underground Railroad’s Joel Edgerton) and his wife Daniela (Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly), a married couple living in Chicago with their teenaged son, Charlie (The Fabelmans‘ Oakes Fegley). This Dark Matter review contains no spoilers.
The best-selling science fiction novel Dark Matter by Blake Crouch has been adapted into an Apple TV+ original series, bolstered by an all-star cast. With Crouch himself staying on as the showrunner and executive producer, Dark Matter unfolds at a brisk pace that leans more into the thriller elements of the source material than the science fiction premise. And while many of the familiar stylistic and thematic tropes in a number of Apple TV+ original thrillers are on display, the performance by the series’ leads elevates the material and helps make Dark Matter stand distinct from its contemporaries on the platform.
Dark Matter follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a physics teacher at a local university in the suburbs of Chicago who lives a happy, if unassuming, life with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and their teenage son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). After reconnecting with...

The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).
With the Anti-Monitor on the loose, a whole host of heroes assemble to save the Multiverse, but it looks like that will be easier said than done when they also have Lex Luthor to contend with. Several other villains are also spotted, including The Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face.
In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!
The Saturday morning cartoon aired between 1973 and 1985 on ABC and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. That classic animation style returns here and we're hoping the movie has even...

Dark Matter releases on Apple TV+ on May 8th, 2024.
In 2016 Blake Crouch published his novel Dark Matter. It was a thrilling story exploring the possibilities of varying realities and alternate universes through the multiverse. The concept of the multiverse in entertainment was nothing new; however, this was years before the multiverse boom that now engulfs Marvel, DC and even the Oscars with hits like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
I had the chance to speak with the series’ star Jimmi Simpson and Executive Producers Blake Crouch and Matt Tolmach.
The Plot
Jason Desson (Joel Edgerton), his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and his friend Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) all have varying encounters with the multiverse in this parallel universe spanning thriller from writer Blake Crouch.

Have you ever watched It’s a Wonderful Life and wished that Frank Capra had paused to show us Clarence the Angel explaining to George Bailey how he was able to present him with the experience of a world in which he was never born?
Chances are good you haven’t — that you appreciate that the surest way to ruin whimsy is to “But actually…” it.
But if you have, indeed, yearned for a version of It’s a Wonderful Life in which “magic” was replaced by a literal black box and “joy and sadness and general wonderment” by “dejection and self-seriousness and general washed-out solemnity,” Apple TV+’s adaptation of Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter may be in your wheelhouse. It’s a series that doesn’t lack for ingenuity and, especially in the last two hours, ideas pop up that border on inspired, but the lack of tonal variation ultimately dooms Dark Matter.

Plot: The series will follow Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor, and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.

You know the old adage: you wait ages for an Apple sci-fi show about quantum superposition, and then two come along at once. Just a month after we unravelled the existential mysteries of Constellation, we now have another reality-bending rabbit hole to disappear down in this series by Blake Crouch, adapted from his 2016 novel. But where Constellation took a deliberate, almost meditative approach to blending parallel worlds, confuzzling audiences right up until its slow-burn reveal, Dark Matter is a more up-front affair, wearing its fluctuating quantum state proudly on its five-dimensional sleeve.
Edgerton’s Jason Dessen lives a simple but happy life with wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). Working as a college physics teacher, he’s professionally unfulfilled (though apparently still able to afford a stunning brownstone in downtown Chicago) and vastly overshadowed by former classmate Ryan (Jimmi Simpson). After a night out though,...

Finally, Disney+’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch has its priorities sorted.
The first two seasons’ cameo-heavy Mission of the Week format quickly grew stale, but as creator Dave Filoni, supervising director Brad Rau and head writer Jennifer Corbett disappeared deeper into their Disney-sponsored sandbox, it became clear that this wasn’t merely a graveyard of shameless walk-backs or desperate reinforcements of messy canon. The Bad Batch was always about underdogs, about displaced war heroes struggling to survive in a galaxy that has no need for them.

Last year was a standout year for animation, and 2024 is already shaping up to be another banger. While a majority of the high-profile animation releases are due out later this summer, the first quarter of 2024 has already been promising. We at /Film are constantly singing the praises of animation as a medium, and doing our best to course-correct the ignorant idea that animation is only for children. Admittedly, this list is going to look mighty small for the time being, but it will be updated throughout the year as more films become available. As we noted last year, animation is one of the only mediums where global cinema is given an equal footing to studio-produced films in America, with the artistic visuals serving as a universal language that we can all enjoy. Meaning, this list is not limited to Hollywood animation releases ... and that's a good thing. As for now,...

In a strange turn of events, Black Mirror might get some inspiration from the pink blizzard that was Margot Robbie’s Barbie. The sci-fi dystopia series is arguably one of the most critically acclaimed anthologies in television history. And Netflix has recently announced that the show is coming back with its newest season.
Margot Robbie in and as Barbie
What’s even more exciting is the streaming service also let the fans know that there will be a sequel for one of the series’ best episodes from its last season. The USS Callister episode will finally be getting a sequel, which only means more thrill and fascination.

USS Callister of Black Mirror Season Four is ranked one of the best episodes of the entire series. The episode has Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons, at its center.

The popular Star Trek-inspired season four episode starred Jesse Plemons as Capt. There is good news for fans of Charlie Brooker's dark, satirical anthology series Black Mirror. While we still have a wait ahead of us, we now know that Season 7 of the show will debut in 2025, including a sequel to classic Star Trek-nudging ep USS Callister. Check out the sizzle teaser for the season below…
This being Brooker and Black Mirror, there are naturally very few details to be gleaned at this point. All we really know about the seventh season is that it'll have six standalone episodes and shooting is already underway.

TV's most shocking, confounding, and oftentimes divisive show is coming back for more with its highly-anticipated seventh season ... but, as befits this franchise, there's an additional twist. There's nothing this particular fanbase loves more than to debate the absolute best and worst episodes of the anthology series. "San Junipero" and "Bandersnatch" are commonly cited near the top of most lists, but the acclaimed "USS Callister" might very well be in a league all by itself. The season 4 premiere has taken on a life of its own in the years since its debut, boasting a strong cast, a mind-bending premise, and arguably one of the best "Star Trek" homages/satires in all of sci-fi. Well, viewers can now look forward to a sequel of sorts, which will presumably bring back the original cast of the episode for yet another virtual-reality adventure.

Black Mirror Season 7 arrives in 2025 with six twisted episodes, including a sequel to USS Callister
Back in November, we heard that the Netflix streaming service had ordered a seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror – and now Netflix has unveiled a video in which they have confirmed that Black Mirror season 7 will be released sometime in 2025! You can watch the announcement video in the embed above.
Black Mirror season 7 will consist of six episodes, one of which will be a sequel to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister! We even have a short synopsis for that one: “Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning.“
There was a rumor floating around a couple months ago that USS Callister would be getting its own three episode spin-off series. That has never been confirmed, but at least now we know for sure that there’s going to be some USS Callister action in the new season of Black Mirror.

“Black Mirror” is set to return to Netflix in 2025. The six-episode seventh season will include a sequel to the classic “USS Callister” episode.
“Robert Daly is dead, but for the crew of the USS Callister, their problems are just beginning,” the Charlie Brooker anthology series teased on Thursday.
Jesse Plemons played Daly. Cristin Milioti (as Nanette Cole), Jimmi Simpson (as Walton), Michaela Coel (as Shania), and Billy Magnussen (as Valdack) are among the very talented crew of the USS Callister. They have not been (officially) announced for the sequel episodes, though the new episode’s logline sure suggests they’ll be back. “USS Callister” (2017) also features the voice of Aaron Paul (as Gamer691) and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it uncredited cameo by Kirsten Dunst, who was just some random Callister employee.

The last time we saw the genetically altered clone troopers in Disney+’s The Bad Batch, they were dealing with the presumed death of Tech, who’d died during a mission, and the loss of clone Omega, who’d been captured by the Empire. Omega, however, had also reunited with Kaminoan scientist Nala Se as well as Crosshair, both of whom seemed to be waking up to the Empire’s true (evil) nature. Meanwhile, Hunter and Wrecker were determined to track down Omega (and, perhaps, Crosshair), while Echo joined up with Rex to fight the Empire.
On Feb. 21, the third and final season of the animated series debuts on Disney+ (watch the trailer). Disney+ released an official description for the third season: “In the epic final season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the Batch will have their limits tested in the fight to...

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a beloved show with millions of adoring fans, but you don't get to be one of the most boundary-pushing comedies on air without ruffling a few feathers. Although the gang is larger than life, many of the characters draw inspiration from real people, particularly in their names. A few of the main and recurring characters in the show are named after real-life people like celebrities, close friends of the series creators, or the actors that portray them. Unfortunately, not everyone was flattered by their namesake.
The proprietors of Paddy's Pub are pretty darn despicable, but some of the show's minor characters are even less likable. The McPoyles are among some of the most repulsive characters in the show, and their sweaty, unibrowed, incestuous family often finds itself at odds with the gang. The family name, which evokes unpleasant words like "boil" and "spoil," was...

Released through the Netflix streaming service back in December of 2017, season 4 of the anthology series Black Mirror featured an episode called USS Callister, a sort of dark comedy mash-up of Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. It quickly became a fan favorite and earned seven Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, winning Emmys in four categories, including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. Rumors of a USS Callister spin-off started circulating soon after; in fact, we previously reported on the possibility back in 2019. Now What’s on Netflix is reporting that the USS Callister spin-off series is moving ahead at Netflix, and will consist of three episodes.
According to the site, USS Callister will be filming in the United Kingdom and “aims to begin shooting in Spring 2024” Production will reportedly last for ten weeks.
Details about the spin-off’s plot is being kept under wraps.

Welcome class! In today's lesson on "Why Star Wars Animation is the best Star Wars," we'll be talking about the third and final season of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch."
A continuation of the beloved "Clone Wars" animated series centered on the members of Clone Force 99 (each of whom bears unique genetic traits or mechanical implants that distinguish them from other clones), "The Bad Batch" does a better job of balancing standalone storytelling with connections to the rest of the "Star Wars" universe than most of its live-action peers on Disney+. More than that, it's a show that takes the anti-fascist messaging at the core of George Lucas' creation to heart by revealing how the rise of the Galactic Empire led to a clamp-down on both personal freedoms and the quality of life for your average civilian in a galaxy far, far away.
That goes double for the clones, all...
