Based on real-life events, this creepy tale features some sensational CGI horrors but relies too heavily on the cliches of the genre
This is a scary movie in the standard-issue found-footage genre, based on a real-life 1980 incident when a military airbase near Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk was the site of UFO sightings and rumours. A trio of people, toting digital videocameras, return to this creepy woodland, ostensibly metal-detecting for Saxon gold. But of course they are fascinated by the UFO legend, which turns out to be far from untrue.
This is a movie that has clearly been made with meticulous care, and there is all the traditional deadpan docu-realist set up – fussing about, loading up the car, squabbling etc – to make the eventual CGI horrors look even more sensational. But what is frustrating about the film is that despite the real talent involved, it does nothing to develop the genre,...

Continuing their recent trend of acquisitions, IFC Midnight has tossed another found footage alien adventure into the ring with Daniel Simpson’s Hangar 10 – a monotonous effort that somehow makes Alien Abduction seem endearing, exciting, and extraterrestrially invigorating. Yet again a filmmaker experiments with shaky camera angles, choppy footage and off-camera action while supposedly creating the next great invasion thriller, dragging audiences down a disenchanted road without a modicum of entertainment in sight. The Vicious brothers recently schooled science fiction buffs with their own invasion flick, Extraterrestrial, yet Daniel Simpson’s film learns nothing from the more jovial genre ploy by revering back to boredom, sluggishness, and inconsequential storytelling that focuses on anything But non-stop action. The thrills fall flat, the scares die quick, and we’re left with a few treasure hunters sporting some nasty, aggravating attitudes, who spend most of their time mesmerized by flashing lights – like moths to a dimly lit,...

Found footage has come to be an excuse for storytellers to completely bypass drama, character development, and plot in an attempt to be “authentic.” I’m “biast” (pro): been obsessed with UFO stuff since I was a kid
I’m “biast” (con): really tired of found-footage
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I really am like Charlie Brown facing Lucy with the football, sometimes, when it comes to movies: Even though I should know better, I still trust that it’s gonna work out… and then I want to kick myself for being such an idiot. Recently two movies toyed with my love of 20th-century UFO lore to get up my hopes for some good science fact-ion action, and then utterly failed me to the point where I began to question my own pathetic geeky anticipation: Extraterrestrial, with its alien abduction theme, and now Hangar 10,...

A new horror and sci-fi thriller titled Hangar 10 is coming to theatres. This film, from the United Kingdom, brings extraterrestrials to a remote Royal Air Force base. They might be invading, or they might be looking for new friends. Either way, Hangar 10 will release through video-on-demand, this November 7th, 2014. If you are in the Los Angeles area, the film will also release in a few select theatres. Hangar 10 has been directed by Daniel Simpson (Spiderhole) and the script was developed by Adam Preston. Your trip to another world begins here. The synopsis begins with Rendlesham Forest. In this glade, there is a UFO hiking trail, which leads to? Three metal detector enthusiasts are determined to find what is at the end of that trail, but they might not like what they find. An alien fleet of spacecraft looms in the sky and creatures lurk below. The trailer for Hangar 10 is here.

Veteran character Bruce McGill, perhaps best known for his turn as the motorcycle rider Daniel Simpson "D-Day" Day in the 1978 comedy classic National Lampoon's Animal House, has listed his Ojai residence for sale at $1.675 million. McGill and his wife, Gloria Lee-McGill, have owned the five-bedroom residence on Alto Court for about a decade. The 4,013-square-foot house was listed for sale Aug. 6. Saddled with a head-scratcher of a title and a limp front cover endorsement, Spiderhole is predestined to be a bottom-shelf item. Yet Daniel Simpson's film displays talent behind the camera almost from the on-set, smartly investing in unnerving set design that improves on a well-worn plot serving mostly to get our young adult victims into a single setting. Loosely identified artists Zoe (Amy Noble), Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Toby (George Maguire) and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) cruise around London for a place to squat. Familiar with their rights once settled down and looking to score a nice new home, the girls and boys luck out on a sizeable and seemingly abandoned mansion. They settle in, have the requisite hook-up and find a batch of bloody clothes.

Spiderhole might as well be pigeonholing itself in a genre of torture porn. Just how many viewers can really emphasize with the gang of four mates? Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Zoe (Amy Noble), Toby (George Maguire), and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) think squatting is an exciting adventure. And not enough time is spent developing the reasons on why they decided to be homeless. Their need for independence from family is mentioned and that already signals their downfall.
When they can’t be bothered to ask for familial help, at least they have a closeness between one another. But even between four people, they should have an income so they can afford a cheap room. At last during the day, that can be shared amongst themselves.

IFC Midnight has come roaring out of the gate with three tales of terror dropping onto DVD within the first month of 2012! Undocumented, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and Spider Hole are all on the way; and we have the details you need right here!
January 17th, 2012: Undocumented
Good intentions lead to a living nightmare when student filmmakers trying to document the struggle of illegal immigrants become the targets of a dangerous radical group in Undocumented, a startling debut feature coming to DVD from IFC Films.
There are estimates that more than a million people attempt to cross illegally from Mexico to the United States every year – some succeed, some don’t. In his riveting debut as writer-director, Chris Peckover reveals the horror faced by one unlucky group of border crossers. In this suspense-filled drama, an aspiring documentary director Travis (Scott Mechlowicz, Mean Creek, EuroTrip) and his crew set...

There are, of course, many horror films that take the "trapped in one location" gimmick and still manage to deliver it with a half-decent amount of style, creativity, and fun -- or at least a few cheap scares and some splattery gore. And then we have examples like the Irish import Spiderhole, which, despite boasting a rather intriguing title (say it out loud!) brings absolutely nothing new to the table. A fine location is wasted in a morass of dull characters, redundant wandering, constant shrieking, uninspired suspense, little to no horror, and a rather mercenary approach to a "sure thing" premise. Writer / director Daniel Simpson may be a big horror fan, but his first feature speaks to a slavish commitment to formula...

IFC Midnight and Magnet have been releasing quality films in recent years, a sign that you don’t always need wait for the next big Hollywood horror film to find a decent watch (horror use to be big in Hollywood, don’t be hatin’). IFC Midnight has brought us some great flicks like Super, Dead Snow, and to some degree, The Human Centipede (though many of you probably could debate that). When I heard that Spiderhole was going to be released by IFC, I became anxious with nerd glee hoping to see the next best thing in the horror world. Unfortunately, even with reserved expectations, I was disappointed by what Spiderhole had to offer. Though it has some clever ideas, Spiderhole is rather aimless providing you with entertainment only at its most basic level.

Spiderhole is an Irish shot horror film, which released on DVD in the United Kingdom March 21st. The term spiderhole, in nature, is a trap used by arachnids to lure unwary prey for feeding. In director Daniel Simpson's film, an abandoned house in London is used in much the same way, to lure unsuspecting victims. Then, the feelings aroused by this horror film are fear and pity, with Spiderhole showing its story to be partially sourced from tragedy (genre).
Identifying will four break-and-entering squatters is not an easy task. Zoe (Amy Noble), Molly (Emma Griffiths Malin), Toby (George Maguire), and Luke (Reuben-Henry Biggs) soon find themselves trespassers, as they drink themselves into a stupor. They awake to find a house which has trapped them within. Simpson's writing constantly keeps the tension and the suspense up, through mystery. The...

The 2009 Dingle Film Festival begins today with an opening ceremony followed by the screening of Buster Keaton and Charles Reiner's classic 'Steamboat Bill Jr.' with a new full-length score performed live by Peter Blanchette. The festival, now in its 3rd year, has this year named comedy as its theme and will screen a line-up of films in that genre such as 'Monty Python's The Holy Grail', 'The Brian Cowen Story', 'The Truman Show' and 'The Big Lebowski'. And whereas festival director, Maurice Galway, tells Iftn he is excited about all the film screenings he says he is particularly looking forward to the screening of 'Spiderhole', the first Irish film shot using Red cameras, from director Daniel Simpson and producer Patrick O'Neill - both of whom will introduce the film at the festival.

The proposed horror film Born has been described as a fantasy film and as a psychological thriller. The plot reportedly revolves around a married couple, the husband of which is a stop-motion animator, settling down in a quaint English town and then getting terrorised by his claymation creations.
When I first heard about the film it was in a Variety piece that named an amazing array of talent attached as writers, producers and stars. Apparently, Daniel Simpson was attached to direct from a screenplay he had written with Paul Kaye, Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly were set to star, the Chiodo brothers were to supply stop-motion effects, and Guillermo Del Toro and Cliver Barker were among the producers. Surely the poster for that film alone could secure a multi-million dollar budget? Well… I’ve put the poster down at the bottom of the post and you can judge how much...

While Daniel Simpson is still waiting for things to move on the freaky stop-motion nightmare Born, he managed to get up the funding and time to shoot another film called Spiderhole.
He gave word (and a slew of images) to Fangoria recently about said film, which follows the age-old pattern of teens going into someplace unsafe to revel in debauchery only to be killed one by one. Simpson describes it in such a way, however, that it sounds like there may be more to it than that.
After a night of partying these kids find themselves trapped inside the building, with metal sealing all the doors and windows, and soon wake up strapped into some sinister-looking chairs after having been gassed. Nothing pleasant happens from there.

- It’s a whole lot easier for acting couples to stay together when casting agents pick up two players in one as is the case with hubby and wife team Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany. Variety reports that the pair have boarded what looks to be a project in good hands - Guillermo del Toro, Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin will produce, and horror vet Clive Barker will exec produce. Scripted Barker and Paul Kaye and to be be helm by short film filmmaker Daniel Simpson, with names like del toro and Barker involved we all get the hunch that this won’t play out like a rom com. The storyline for Born revolves around a couple who settle down in a seemingly idyllic English town to raise a family. Their perfect life is shaken when the husband, a claymation artist, discovers his characters are acting out a nightmare that comes to life.
