“The Good Night” helmer Jake Paltrow returns to Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival with “June Zero,” his first foreign-language production. In the film – picked up for sales by ICM Partners and Films Boutique – he takes a closer look at the trial and execution of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann, hanged in Israel in 1962.
“My father [television and film director and producer Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002] was a World War II history obsessive. Some of my earliest memories of watching television are of ‘The World at War,’ which later became something we watched together every year. It was all deeply rooted in his Jewishness,” Paltrow tells Variety ahead of the film’s world premiere.
It was never his intention to focus solely on Eichmann, however, or the much-publicized trial, even though he still finds it “relevant and intriguing,” he says.
“I find it uninteresting and problematic to try and make a ‘character’ out of him. We’ve...

Exclusive: Production is underway in Jerusalem on Israeli director’s latest feature.
Israeli filmmaker Avi Nesher is currently shooting his new feature Pilgrim in Jerusalem, and Screen can reveal the first look from the production.
The film revolves around a once brilliant but now disillusioned and penniless psychologist, Jonathan Kedem (Yuval Segal), who is called back to Israel from the Us by his ex-wife (Maya Dagan) to dissuade estranged daughter Anat (Joy Rieger) from marrying into the ultra-orthodox community.
With Anat’s rejection of secular values driving a potential wedge with her family, Jonathan’s journey plunges him into Jerusalem’s “cauldron of competing faiths and passions”. Little does the disillusioned, psychologist realize that this pilgrimage will offer him a rare chance for redemption.
Pilgrim’s shoot has taken Nesher all over Jerusalem, from the religious neighbourhood of Givat Modechai to an East Jerusalem neighbourhood running alongside the separation wall.

The Ghost Writer, directed by Roman Polanski, won six awards at the 2010 European Film Awards, held tonight in Tallinn, Estonia.
The film won awards for best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor, best production design, and best composer. I really enjoyed the film. Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor were great in this film. I was surprised to find out that all of the shots that took place in the house were actually filmed on a sound stage.
See below for a complete listing of this year's winners.

Award season is among us on both sides of the Atlantic. Today the European Film Academy handed out their annual awards in Tallinn, Estonia and the big winner of the evening was Roman Polanski's Ghost Writer, claiming six awards, including Best Picture. Lebanon Israeli's Golden Lion winner of 2009, collected a pair: the award for European discovery, handed out to first time directors ("it's an honor being discovered when you're close to 50", said 48 year old director Samuel Maoz upon receiving the award), and the award for Best Cinematography, handed to Giora Bejach, for his extraordinary work, shooting an (almost) entire film from the Pov of a tank. Lebanon has an enormous artistic appeal, as it demonstrates the claustrophobic feeling leading audiences to believe the film was shot within the confines a tank, when in reality, Maoz didn't have a tank at his disposal. Israeli audiences didn't seem to connect to the film,...

Polanski’s thriller won Best European Film, while Polanski picked up Best Director and shared the screenwriting award with co-author Robert Harris. Ewan McGregor won Best Actor, while production design and music were also honored. In an interview this weekend, Harris said the Swiss authorities were so understanding about Polanski’s need to finish editing The Ghost Writer, they moved editing equipment into the prison where he was being held while facing deportation back to the U.S last year. More than 2,300 academy members voted.
