President Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address emphasized bipartisanship again and again. But while he may or not have achieved it, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema certainly did when she brought Americans of all stripes together to make fun of her outfit.
Now Sinema, the once-Democratic Senator who ostentatiously re-registered as an independent last November, has been frequently called out for what critics say is attention-seeking behavior. But she may have outdone herself with her State of the Union look: An extremely bright yellow dress with huge, extremely frilly sleeves that had people comparing her to everything from Big Bird to a Teletubby.
One user said Sinema skinned Big Bird to get her outfit.
I see Kyrsten Sinema skinned Big Bird for her outfit.

Another one noted Sinema’s classic video game energy.
Kyrsten Sinema looks like the female reboot of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

Leslie Jordan, the goofy comic actor perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning turn as Beverley Leslie, the cynical foil to Megan Mullally’s Karen Walker, on Will & Grace, has died. He was 67.
Jordan was at the wheel of a BMW when he crashed into the side of a building at Cahuenga Boulevard and Romaine Street in Hollywood on Monday morning. He was declared dead at the scene and could have suffered a medical emergency beforehand.
Jordan recurs as Phil, the gay baker at the café owned by Mayim Bialik’s character, on the Fox sitcom Call Me Kat, which returned for its third season last month. He appeared in all five of the new season’s episodes so far.
His other recent work includes turns on FX’s American Horror Story — playing different characters over three seasons — and the 2018-19 Fox sitcom The Cool Kids.

Leslie Jordan, the endlessly effervescent and entertaining actor, comedian, and singer, died Monday, Oct. 24, following a fatal car crash in Los Angeles. He was 67.

Viewers were left baffled on Monday, September 12, when the 2022 Emmy Awards left Dame Olivia Newton-John and other stars out of the show’s emotional In Memoriam tribute. The segment, which pays tribute to stars who passed away since last year’s ceremony, honored the likes of Betty White, Bob Saget, Anne Heche, Ray Liotta, and Sidney Poitier. However, many others were seemingly snubbed, including the iconic Grease actress, who died on August 8 after a long battle with cancer. She was 73. Fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment and confusion over Newton-John’s lack of mention. “What?! Why wasn’t Olivia Newton-John in #Emmys2022 in memoriam?” tweeted one viewer. What?! The late Richard Benner’s 1977 “Outrageous!” blazed trails as both a hit Canadian export and positive screen depiction of gay life, two relative rarities at the time. Even then, some gay viewers found the funny-sad friendship between a hairdresser/professional drag queen and a young schizophrenic woman a bit old-fashioned. But everybody was won over by Craig Russell’s stage impersonations of Hollywood stars — schmaltz and camp being a reliable combination for gay cinema with crossover ambitions.
That formula has scarcely altered 43 years later for “Stage Mother.” It’s the latest from Thom Fitzgerald, whose 1997 “The Hanging Garden” was also shot in Nova Scotia, and helped herald a new, perhaps more politically bold and artistically adventuresome generation of gay Canadian filmmakers. His more recent work has fitted into a time-tested mould of sentimental seriocomedy, however. Diehard fans will most appreciate Del Shores’ belated sequel to Sordid Lives, his 2000 indie hit comedy about the entwined lives of numerous colorful characters, several of them gay, in the Bible Belt town of Winters, Texas. Featuring many of the original castmembers as well as newcomers in several key roles, this installment delivers much of the same brand of raucous, gay-themed humor that propelled its predecessor to surprising success. It’s also following in the footsteps of the first film, which enjoyed a run of nearly two years in a Palm Springs theater; in the same location, A Very Sordid...

One year ago, the post-Oscar specialized rebound began with the release of “Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name Is Doris.” Each opened with per-theater averages over $20,000; then, with support from older audiences all across the country, made $19 million and $14 million, respectively.
This year it’s “Personal Shopper,” with the French film starring Kristen Stewart showing unexpected interest. “Raw” (Focus) and “A Sense of the Ending” (Lionsgate) also managed PTAs over $10,000, indicating some chance for future success.
Ahead of any other new release in PTA was a single theater, premiere-event boosted initial date for “A Very Sordid Wedding” in Palm Springs. This week also saw the very limited opening of “Burning Sands,” the second film in the Sundance 2017 U.S. dramatic competition to find its home on Netflix. As usual, no gross for this, which is sort of beside the point.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out….but mostly movies.
This Past Weekend:
It was absolutely no surprise that Hugh Jackman’s last Wolverine movie Logan would top the box office, but it actually ended up doing even better than my prediction when actual numbers came in, grossing $88.3 million over the weekend. That makes it the fourth highest X-Movie opening (including Deadpool) but also the biggest R-rated opening for March, defeating 300’s once-impressive $70 million opening. It’s also the fourth highest R-rated opening of all time after Deadpool, The Matrix Reloaded and American Sniper.
The bigger surprise was how well Jordan Peele’s thriller Get Out held up in its second weekend, not only because it was going up against Logan, but also because high-profile horror films tend...

A Very Sordid Wedding is a sequel to the hit play, TV series and movie Sordid Lives, the latter of which screened at Camelot Theatres for 96 weeks upon its release.

Sissies Willam Belli, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Luke Stratte McClure & Emerson Collins
Religion and homosexuality have always had a tough relationship and leave it to Del Shores to address the issue head-on in the film version of his renowned play, Southern Baptist Sissies.
Like the play, which has been staged countless times since Shores wrote it in 2000, the film takes a look at four young boys – all Southern Baptists – and their journeys into adulthood and sexuality, with their parents, God and the Church watching closely over them to stop any missteps. While Sissies is filled with great laughs and musical performances, there’s a heavy dramatic message here, too, that unfortunately still applies in 2014.
TheBacklot checked in with Shores to talk about making the film (including Willam Belli’s joining the cast) as well as getting some scoop on his gone-but-not-forgotten series, Sordid Lives, which, we found out, may not be gone after all!

Dallas writer/filmmaker Clay Luther made his feature directorial debut at this year's Dallas International Film Festival (Diff) with Cry, a drama that explores several timely topics including bullying and homophobia. Luther effectively portrays the complexity of his main characters and avoids the formulaic and simplistic Hollywood ending.
Cry focuses on two neighbors on the opposite ends of life -- Cable (Bill Flynn) is a despondent widower who has lost the will to live and is estranged from his daughter, and Carson (Skyy Moore) is a high-school student who is bullied by fellow basketball player Micah (Erick Lopez).
Carson may not have experienced life, but he has suffered the death of his mother and lives with his openly homosexual uncle, Jeremy (Del Shores). Although Carson has his girlfriend Grace (Cherami Leigh), he's emotionally troubled from the almost daily beatings he receives from Micah. It is inferred that Micah and Carson had been best friends,...

Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, creators of the HBO comedy pilot Washingtonienne, have come on board to write an adaptation of the Mexican drama series Terminales for ABC Family. The hire seems appropriate as Terminales is sometimes described as “Sex and the City‘if Carrie Bradshaw was dying of cancer” and Sarah Jessica Parker, who played Bradshaw on the hit HBO comedy, developed and executive produced Washingtonienne. Created and produced by Miguel Angel Fox, Terminales chronicles the life of young and successful publicist April Marquez who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Fogel and Lefkowitz replace Del Shores who was originally tapped to write the project. Lionsgate TV and Kapital Entertainment are producing Terminales. Aaron Kaplan is executive producing; Paul Presburger is overseeing for Televisa which owns the format.

The first time I saw Octavia Spencer was in 2003 in Los Angeles, playing the best friend of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship in Del Shores' play "The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife." With her big, expressive eyes and brilliant comic timing, she was that unique combination: an actor who appears well-trained and perfectly natural. And most audiences would have been surprised to find out that this accomplished performance was not the work of a stage veteran. It was her first, and to this date only, play. After that, it seemed Spencer was everywhere, making a maximum impression with a minimal amount of screen time. There was her role as an outspoken bystander in "S.W.A.T." and her turn as a basketball player's mother in "Coach Carter," and with only one line in the raucous comedy "Bad Santa," she managed to steal the entire film. Spencer quickly.

An attorney for Stanley Brooks has sent letters to AFTRA and the WGA West demanding that they remove his client, who was executive producer of the Logo series "Sordid Lives" and other series and TV movies, from their "Do Not Work List." The letter demands that the guilds stop telling their members not to do business with Brooks or his company Once Upon a Time Films.
The letter was sent Monday by Arnold Peter of the law firm Peter, Rubin & Simon to attorneys for the two guilds.

Brooks to actors who worked on the 2008 Logo TV series "Sordid Lives," and filed a petition in federal court in Los Angeles to confirm the results of their previous arbitration award against Brooks and his company Once Upon A Time.
The DGA, WGA West and the Iatse Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plan have also rejected the offer from Brooks to settle $1.6 million in mostly in unpaid residual payments, for $242,000, or about 16 cents on the dollar.
Brooks' company, as a result, will declare bankruptcy shortly, his attorney Kenneth Suddleson said Friday.
Suddleson noted that his client had told the actors and writer-director Del Shores, as well as the guilds, that he would have no other choice if his offer wasn't accepted.

The Hollywood talent guilds that have been trying to collect unpaid money and residuals from producer Stanley M. Brooks relating to Logo's "Sordid Lives: The Series" are poised to reject his offer to settle $1.6 million in debts for 16 cents on the dollar.
AFTRA, the DGA and the WGA West have made their decisions while the Iatse pension fund has yet to make its final decision. The guilds held a meeting Wednesday at AFTRA headquarters after polling their affected members.
The union members who attended meetings or spoke to their guild reps this week were apparently unanimous in rejecting the offer.
"I did not give less than 100% of my time or talent to this project and I will not accept to be paid anything less than 100% of what is owed me plus penalties," actress and AFTRA member Caroline Rhea said from Scotland, where she is performing in a play.

Executive producer Stanley M. Brooks of Once Upon a Time Films did not attend an AFTRA arbitration hearing Tuesday concerning more than $1 million owed from a 2008 Logo TV series but was represented by an attorney who acknowledged that there were unpaid residual payments, according to Del Shores, who was creator and director of the show in question, "Sordid Lives: The Series."
"I went to the AFTRA arbitration today to be a witness for AFTRA," Shores said in a statement to THR after the hearing. "I was not called upon to testify. My understanding is that Stan Brooks and Once Upon a Time Films agreed that they owed the actors of 'Sordid Lives: The Series' somewhere around $1.1 million in unpaid residuals and requested to meet with all three guilds involved -- WGA, DGA and AFTRA -- to try to come to a settlement for the artists owed, including myself.

Andy Dick's antics are hitting headlines once again - the funnyman was reportedly ejected from a Los Angeles playhouse after storming into the venue in a drunken stupor earlier this month. According to the National Enquirer, the troubled comedian walked into a performance of Yellow at the Coast Playhouse on June 2, insisting he didn't need a ticket as he attempted to find a seat.
The former NewsRadio star was reportedly kicked out by the play's director, Del Shores. Shores later posted a rant on social networking website Facebook.com, raging he "kicked (Andy's) drunk a** out". The reported incident is the latest in a string of troubles for Dick - in April, he was picked up by cops after allegedly wandering into a house in Los Angeles in the middle of the night, prompting the frightened family to call police.

Dick is also currently facing charges of felony first degree sexual assault for allegedly grabbing a security guard's crotch and kissing a male guest at a bar in Huntington, West Virginia without invitation in January.
That case will go to court later this month June.

From the playwright who brought you Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies comes Yellow. Dennis Hensley catches up with Del Shores on the set of his powerhouse new drama at the Coast Playhouse in West Hollywood. Del talks about the inspiration for his newest work, reveals an Ocd streak, and shares memories of his dear friend, the late, great Rue McClanahan.
Apologies in advance for the poor sound during the audience Q&A session. You may need to fast forward to the end where the audio is better and Dennis speaks one-on-one with Del Shores.

The woman who so famously brought Golden Girls' Blanche Deveraux to life has passed away at the age of 76.
According to a statement from her manager, the actress died of a "massive stroke" at 1:00 Am this morning. McClanahan had been in ill health since suffering a minor stroke earlier this year. Fortunately she had family with her at the time of her passing and "went in peace."
Rue McClanahan worked in theater both on and off-Broadway before scoring wider TV exposure first on the the daytime soap opera Another World, and then playing "Vivian," best friend to Bea Arthur's title character on Maude.
She was married six times and is survived by actor Morrow Wilson (whom she married in 1997) and her son from a previous marriage, Mark Bish.
Rue's last acting role was actually on the Logo channel.

Former Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan is recovering after undergoing an emergency heart bypass, just days after her doctor spotted a problem during a routine medical examination.
The 75-year-old actress was hospitalised earlier this month after a physician noticed a problem with her heart while undergoing tests for a planned knee operation.
McClanahan, best known for her role as Blanche Devereaux on the hit series, apologised to fans for having to pull out of Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan at San Francisco's Castro Theatre on 14 November.
But despite insisting she just needed some "maintenance on the old ticker", the star was rushed into the operating room on Wednesday to undergo serious heart bypass surgery.
However, her pal Del Shores reveals the op went "very, very well," adding, "She's going to be great and up and entertaining us all very shortly."...

Olivia Newton-John’s recent wedding to John Easterling came as a surprise to everyone who knows her – except her daughter, Chloe. "My family was surprised," Olivia tells People of her June 21 vow exchange in Peru, "but my daughter knew – I told my daughter." It wasn't until a July 4 barbeque at her home in Malibu that the singer, 59, shared the big news with the rest of her close family and friends – and by then, she and Easterling, a natural-health businessman, had already said "I do" a second time in Jupiter Island, Fla. Logo, the MTV Networks channel that targets lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender viewers, said Tuesday that it is moving forward on "Sordid Lives: The Series", a scripted show based on Del Shores' 1996 play and 2000 film.
Logo has ordered 12 half-hour episodes of "Sordid Lives", about a dysfunctional Southern family, which is created, written and directed by Shores ("Queer as Folk", "Dharma & Greg"). The series, which has gone into production in Louisiana for a fall(2008) premiere, has been in development for two years, with the scripts completed last year before the writers strike started, Logo said.
Most of the film and stage cast are reprising their roles in the series, including Olivia Newton-John -- who will perform five new original songs for the show -- Bonnie Bedelia and Beth Grant. Leslie Jordan is set to guest star in several episodes, reprising his role as Brother Boy.
Rue McClanahan and Caroline Rhea, who did not appear in the film, also star.
"These TV and film icons populate Del Shores' amplified Southern family brilliantly," said Brian Graden, president of MTV Networks Music Group Entertainment and president of Logo.

Playwright Del Shores is teaming with producers Alice West, Victoria Alonso and Jason Dottley to form the production company Eclectic Entertainment. The label and its multifilm slate were announced Saturday at the American Film Market. Shores, a veteran writer and producer on such TV series as Queer as Folk and Dharma & Greg, will launch the shingle with a big-screen adaptation of his play Southern Baptist Sissies, which chronicles the lives of four gay boys growing up in a Baptist community. The film will begin shooting in the summer. "There comes a time in your career when you are able to choose the projects that you are passionate about and the people you want to work with," Shores said. "For us, that time had come, and Eclectic Entertainment was born."...
