The year 2023 has been the year of suspense, mystery and emotion-packed stories, with adrenaline-pumping shows like ‘The Night Manager 1 and 2’, ‘Aarya’ and ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’.
The mastermind behind ‘Aarya’ — Ram Madhvani — provided insights into decoding the thriller genre, saying: “I don’t think I’m making a thriller, I don’t think I’m making a crime show. I’m making a show about a family. I’m making a show about a character who’s put into difficult situations. The backdrop of it may be or whatever that she’s going through. It could have been any other backdrop. It could have been an industrial kind of backdrop. So I think that is just the backdrop.”

The Night Manager (Disney+ Hotstar)
Sometimes the biggest of strategists can go wrong. The minds that decided to split writer-director Sandeep Modi’ s The Night Manger into two (messily amputated ) halves , have done the series a huge disservice.
Part 2, as it were, is a vegan’s delight. All the meat was in Part 1, and even the principal performances were more accentuated by the predominant emotions in the first-half. The second-half is all about nemesis. And not of the subtle variety.
There are no new revelations for us to chew on. We know Aditya Roy Kapoor’s Shaan Sengupta has infiltrated the antagonist arms dealer Shelly Rungta’s organization.
We saw in Part 1 that Shaan won the ruthless Rungta’s trust by staging his son’s kidnapping and rescue. Miraculously the little boy disappears in the second half.Maybe he got kidnapped again, this time for real, and we don’t know about it.

Netflix’s recently released sequel of their famous anthology from 2018, Lust Stories, is back with more stories, new actors, and new directors helming the project and helping the audience understand the concept of lust from new points of view. The 2018 one had diverse stories about the female body and needs, and it created quite a buzz, especially the short film featuring Kiara Advani. Lust Stories is an important part of the Netflix India releases because, as the country is obsessed with Hindi cinema and the industry is filled with love stories, it is fascinating to understand what happens before and after ‘they lived happily ever after’ and what would be their way to sustain the love.
This time around, there are also tales of exploring sensual pleasure from a female perspective, but not all of them landed the way they should have. Out of the four stories presented to the viewers,...

Mumbai, July 1 (Ians) Actress-director Konkona Sen Sharma, who has been receiving a lot of positive response to her short film in the streaming anthology ‘Lust Stories 2’, shared that she struggled in the early part of her acting career to look a certain way and “to fit in.”
Konkona’s short film, which stars Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash as the lead characters, explores female gaze and voyeurism.
Sharing her thoughts on the existing stereotypes around women and their need for sexual and romantic pleasure, Konkona Sen Sharma said: “Very often, the bodies that are allowed to feel the sexual/romantic pleasure are very limited because usually they have to be thin, fair, rich and young – that was the fourth factor. So usually only those kinds of bodies are allowed to desire and also there have been certain limitations in terms of how people from different economic backgrounds are portrayed.

The last time Konkona Sen Sharma directed something, it was 2017. A year after that, the first installment of Netflix’s Lust Stories was released. Sex used to be a bigger taboo in India back then, so content like that was bound to get all the attention. Especially with four of the big names of Bollywood directing one segment each, Lust Stories was destined for popularity. However, from a cinematic point-of-view, it was not particularly great. Three out of the four directors, Kashyap, KJo, and Zoya Akhtar, treated lust as some kind of forbidden fruit and put a woman at the center of the story, which effectively villainized them.
I am sure you all have seen the “Kiara Advani TV remote” video and so many edits of that all over the internet over the past six years. While that particular segment was supposed to be a representation of female empowerment, the result was actually the opposite,...

Lost in lust, or perhaps the hit lust… such mischievous descriptions spring to mind as we watch an extremely sexual Grandma in Balki’s story played by Neena Gupta about whom her screen-son Ayushman Khurrana had famously said she doesn’t give those “Maa wali vibes”.
Here in the second part of Lust Stories, Gupta gives herself a gala time as a grandmom counselling her grandchild Mrunal Thakur(who giggles her way through her perky part) to have sex with her fiancée(Angad Bedi looking visibly uncomfortable with barely six lines to speak) before marrying him.
Horny Granma’s logic is, “Even when you buy car you first test-drive it.” Right.
I have never come across a grandma like Gupta in R Balki’s warm and well-meaning segment in this four-part saga where one story, like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi in the Karan Johar anthology...

Actress Tilotama Shome, who is a renowned Indian face on the global map, feels that it took a few filmmakers to take that risk and imagine her in roles which were different from representing a poorer section of our society.

The actress has performed varied roles in her career and her performances can not be boxed in any single genre. Actress Tillotama Shome, who plays the role of Lipika in the streaming series ‘The Night Manager’, has shared the trick for cracking her character in the show. The actress revealed that to get the character right, she focussed on her walking and talking style.
Opening up about the preparations, Tillotama said, “For my character Lipika, I just had to pay attention to her walking and talking style. Multiple discussions with my directors really helped in fully fleshing out the small and big details. For example, after every location scout my directors, Sandeep Modi and Priyanka Ghose would personally show me spaces that they would have envisioned to shape Lipika. It felt really lucky to have directors who would share so much with me and this really pushed me to do more.”

Emirati Movie
British actor Jefferson Hall will soon appear on screen in Emirati director Nayla Al Khaja’s psychological thriller “Three,” about a young boy who appears to be possessed.
Al Khaja – who is known for standout shorts including horror film “The Shadow” and “Animal” that both play on Netflix – has just wrapped the independently-produced “Three,” her debut feature, which was shot in Thailand.
Besides, Hall, “Three” also stars Faten Ahmed; Noura Alabed (“Wiladah”); veteran U.A.E. actor Mari Al Halyan (“On Borrowed Time”); Mohannad Bin Huthail (“Rashash”) and emerging Emirati talent Saud Alzarooni.
“Three” marks a rare case of a drama in which a Brit becomes enmeshed with the core of an Emirati family. The film unfolds in an unspecified modern-day Middle Eastern city, where a young boy named Ahmed begins exhibiting strange behavior, eventually leading his mother Maryam, to believe he is possessed. There is always that one ‘mature’ and ‘worldly wise’ person who is indispensable to the youngsters, teaching them the tricks of the trade. Tillotama Shome’s character Meera does just that in Netflix’s upcoming romantic fantasy thriller series Tooth Pari: When Love Bites.
Addressed as ‘poetry in motion’ Meera personifies the idea that ‘normies are boring’. In her world full of vampires, who are eager to explore the human world, she is content and satisfied with her life! She doesn’t yearn for human blood, nor does she wish to interact with any humans. She stands out with her zany attire and her unconventional yet very evolved articulation of thoughts. Being a veteran, she has her own unique ways of ‘training’ young vampires to make their moves in the human world.
It’s interesting to see how Meera reacts to Rumi falling in love with a human dentist and what her advice would be.

Actress Tillotama Shome, who is receiving a lot of positive response to her work in the recently released streaming series, “The Night Manager”, reveals that the kind of homework her co-actor Aditya Roy Kapur does can make any actor nervous.
“Aditya can make you really nervous with the amount of homework he does. And that makes you work harder,” she said.
About working with Anil Kapoor, she said: “Anil Kapoor is not just physically youthful but has an appetite to engage with new currents and actors. His curiosity is humbling.”
Although she and Saswata Chatterjee had no scenes, Tillotama applauded the Bengali actor’s attitude and warmth towards his co-artistes.
“Saswata da and I had no scenes in this sadly, but he is the warmest. I had such a wonderful time working with Anand Potdhuke. Our directors Sandeep and Priyanka went above and beyond to keep everyone comfortable”, she added.

Anil Kapoor has never been afraid of taking risks. The Indian film icon, amongst the best-known Bollywood stars in the West after starring in 24, Slumdog Millionaire and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, has always sought to blaze a trail, first by working in television well before it became acceptable for film stars in India to do so, and most recently by embracing projects for streaming platforms.
Kapoor’s latest endeavor is the Disney+ Hotstar streaming original limited series The Night Manager, which launched on the platform on Feb. 17. Created by Sandeep Modi, the spy drama is an adaptation of John le Carré’s 1993 novel of the same name. The series tells the story of Shaan Sengupta (Aditya Roy Kapur), an Indian intelligence operative who goes undercover as a hotel night manager at a luxury resort in Bangladesh to surveil arms dealer Shailendra “Shelly” Rungta (Kapoor). The Night Manager
Directed by Sandeep Modi, Priyanka Ghose
It is immaterial whether you are familiar with John Le Carre’s espionage novel or not. As a stand-alone piece of kitschy art The Night Manager works just fine. The writers Sridhar Raghavan and Sandeep Modi make just the right switches and shifts of mood and location from the original to the remake, rendering the remake so distinct that even those who enjoyed the original would love the desi avatar of The Night Manager.
It is easy to miss out on the nuances that have gone into creating this self-contained world of intrigue and suspense. Outwardly The Night Manager is a routine thriller about an entrepreneur tycoon Shailendra Rungta moonlighting as an arms dealer .
Anil Kapoor plays Rungta with the kind of archaic bland swag that went out of style with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. He is shown to be a sinister global criminal,...
