In the late eighties/ early nineties, shortly after they did Predator together, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McTiernan and writer Shane Black were all set to team on a big-budget movie adaptation of the DC comic book Sgt. Rock. This is why, at the end of Predator, Black is seen reading a Sgt Rock comic during the cast roll. According to author Nick de Semlyan’s new book, “The Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the project was heavily developed in ’88 and ’89, only to be demolished by an unlikely candidate – Monty Python’s John Cleese.
At the time, Cleese was riding high on the success of A Fish Called Wanda, and McTiernan thought he would be an ideal addition to the movie’s cast. The film was set to adapt an old Danny Kaye comedy called Imitation General. Cleese would play an English cook posing as a general during WW2 and being...

Nobody was expecting it, but it’s true: two-time Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal – who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the 2010 film Crazy Heart and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for writing her 2021 feature directorial debut The Lost Daughter – is writing and directing a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). The Bride! is currently making its way through production and unveiling images that are intriguing, even if there are jarring elements to them. So we thought this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About The Bride!
Studio And Release Date
The Bride! is not set up at Universal Pictures, so this isn’t an official remake of The Bride of Frankenstein, it’s a play on the same concepts found in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein that inspired the 1935 film.

The already impressive cast of Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein movie for Netflix continues to grow, with del Toro taking to Twitter this week to announce that Ralph Ineson will make a “pivotal cameo” appearance in the film.
“He is amazing and fun to work with,” del Toro added in the aforementioned tweet, which came in response to Fangoria celebrating Ralph Ineson as a “modern day horror icon.”
Ineson responded to del Toro’s tweet, “Thank you Boss, your set is a joyous place to be.”
Jacob Elordi will be playing Frankenstein’s monster in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel, alongside Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac.

Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley would certainly raise a toast to their characters in Jose Prendes’ Monster Mash. Victor Frankenstein sends his creature Boris to abduct Count Dracula’s daughter, Elisabeta. Dracula gathers a few old friends who are victims of Frankenstein to stop him from creating a monster that can be the end of the world. A fright warning before the climax is one of the funniest things in this crazy rollercoaster of a movie.

Mary Shelley's genre novel landmark Frankenstein is one source material that, like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula or Garfield, filmmakers just can't somehow stay away from. Perhaps it's because the story of a man and his creation offers so many potential thematic choices. Or because actors just love playing the stitched-up result of the doctor's work. In this case, we have writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal offering up the first looks at Christian Bale as the creature and Jessie Buckley as his chosen Bride. Check out Bale above and the other images below…
From the looks of these, Gyllenhaal (marking her second directorial effort after the Oscar-nominated The Lost Daughter) has certainly put a new spin on the classic story (or more accurately The Bride Of Frankenstein).
Your official synopsis runs as follows: A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphonious in creating a companion for himself.

Bale’s version of the monster features a scarred face, sutures on his forehead and a stitched-up chest adorned with a tattoo that reads “Hope.” Meanwhile, Buckley appears in a bleached-blond, finger-waved hairstyle, with ink splatter covering her cheek.

Mary Shelley’s magnum opus Frankenstein might have highlighted the theme prominently with potent fright and nuance, but creators being haunted by their creations has been a recurrent motif in art and literature since antiquities. In works of merit, a thorough delineation of the topic often entails a narrative discussion of topics like the tribulations and failures involving the creative process, the pursuit of perfection, hindrances through self-doubt, the search for a creative voice, etc. Robert Morgan’s Stopmotion, a doomed, grotesque celebration of everything creative, juggles all these topics and more with enough care as to not become tedious or pretentious while teetering on the midpoint of psychological and supernatural horror at the same time. By no means is it implied that the movie reinvents the genre or subverts expectations, as it mostly retreads familiar tracks while showcasing the horrors that can plague a creative mind. Stopmotion excels in acing the basics,...

The battle between creationism and science has been long-standing. Some believe God created humans, while others argue that humans created God—a theme explored by countless writers and philosophers. Yet, conclusions on this matter often rely solely on speculation. As someone with an aversion to creationism, I find myself contemplating that the creation of God might be part of an inevitable cycle. To delve deeper into this notion, it seems that in our fragile civilization, the tendency to create a god and immortalize it comes as a distraction from hopelessness and the fear of death.
I also believe that, originally, the fear of death was supposed to humble us. It was supposed to teach us humility and remind us that death spares no one. But then we created the idea of an afterlife, rebirth, and whatnot, nullifying the significance of death in the process. As we gradually realized our ability...

West Country director Paul Dudbridge appears to be working his way through the Gothic classics. Having directed Fear The Invisible Man in 2023, he picks up Mary Shelley’s classic in a familiar place – the same place that polar explorer Captain Walton picks up Frankenstein himself during his frantic journey across the ice in pursuit of his creation. This section of the story is pretty much a straight retelling, but rather than continuing with the Captain’s account of what his unlikely passenger told him, we follow Frankenstein’s journal as it is sold on by a sailor and passed down through the years from one scientist to another – each of them hoping to repeat the experiment described within.
Whilst it might have been interesting to see a little more of these experiments, Dudbridge makes what is probably the sensible choice, on his modest budget, and focuses on just one. 95 years.

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein remains as influential as ever, with numerous notable adaptations and horror movies inspired by the literary classic released in the last year alone. That extends to comics, too, with Skybound Entertainment revealing via IGN today that they’re reviving the horror icon with comic series Universal Monsters: Frankenstein.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 will be released on August 28, 2024.
The four-issue limited series will be written and drawn by The Silver Coin creator Michael Walsh. The limited series follows up Skybound’s Universal Monsters: Dracula and Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon series.

In the comic, “Dr. Henry Frankenstein robs a police officer’s grave to find body parts for his new creation, only to discover that the officer’s son is still yearning for his dead father. If only Mary Shelley could've lived to see a Frankenstein story with a twist quite like this one. Horror fans have been waiting quite some time for writer Diablo Cody to get another kick at the horror can after 2009's "Jennifer's Body," the Megan Fox-starring flick that's taken on the air of a genuine cult classic after initially bombing among critics and audiences alike. For Millennials of a certain age, time has been kind to the unabashedly feminist story of a demon possessing a high school student and developing a taste for male flesh (as one does), and now the time has come for everyone to offer up a long-overdue mea culpa. Luckily, this year's release of the hilariously offbeat "Lisa Frankenstein" feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Stephen King is, as his name suggests, the king of horror fiction (while occasionally delving into other genres). The combination of his vivid writing style, characters with unique personalities and special abilities, and epic stories that unfurl with riveting suspense make his work rife for cinematic interpretation. Within these spine-chilling stories, King infuses keen observations on the human condition, and how evil — both supernatural and real — manifests in our society. Stephen King's literary works have produced some of the greatest films of all time including Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Brian De Palma's "Carrie," and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me." Over 70 of his novels and short stories have been adapted into films or television shows, but since he is such a prolific writer — often churning out several books each year — there are countless that have yet to be adapted. This list ranks seven of Stephen King's engrossing page-turners...

Peter Sarsgaard Teases Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein Film: ‘A Romantic, Wild, Punk Monster Movie’
As Hollywood productions begin to pick up steam again, it seems as if everyone in the film industry has Frankenstein on their minds.
One of the year’s first studio releases was Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ “Lisa Frankenstein,” which reimagined Mary Shelley’s classic novel of reanimation gone wrong as a contemporary teen comedy. That film will be followed by two other high profile adaptations that entered production this month: Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” which stars Oscar Isaac as the mad scientist alongside Mia Goth and Jacob Elordi as The Monster; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming sophomore feature, which reportedly stars Christian Bale as a version of Frankenstein’s monster who pursues love in 1930s Chicago in a riff on “The Bride of Frankenstein.”

When it comes to pushing the limits physically and mentally for a role, it is difficult to look past Christian Bale. The British actor is not just known for his memorable performances on screen, but also for his extreme modes of preparation that he adopts to get into the skin of his characters. From resorting to brutal diets for his roles in American Psycho and The Fighter to sacrificing sleep to play an insomniac in The Machinist, Bale has done it all for the love of his craft.

More recently, the Oscar winner was seen in Thor: Love and Thunder in another transformative role as Gorr the God Butcher. With his penchant for taking on complex parts, Bale is looking to push the envelope once again in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride for which he will go through some tangible changes to reportedly play the iconic Frankenstein.

Maisie Williams gained international recognition and two Emmy nominations for her performance as Arya Stark in the epic series, Game of Thrones. Williams joined the project when she was just 12 and spent most of her formative years in the character. While fans expect the heroic Arya Stark to return for the highly anticipated Jon Snow spin-off series, it appears that Williams wants to move on to more diverse roles.

There are a lot of "Frankenstein" movies. There's even one in theaters right now: "Lisa Frankenstein," a fun 80s-set horror-comedy-romance brew (read /Film's review here).
One could even say the story of "Frankenstein" birthed the horror genre as we know it today, both in literature (thanks to Mary Shelley's "Modern Prometheus") and in film. James Whale's 1931 "Frankenstein," arriving on the heels of "Dracula," cemented the age of Universal Horror and proved that monsters could be crowd-pleasers.
Countless sequels and remakes later, everyone knows the basics of the story. Dr. Frankenstein (first name usually Victor) sets out to create life in a reanimated corpse. The result is a Creature, unpleasant to the eye, and soon Frankenstein experiences the wrath of his Monster. Was Frankenstein's Monster born destructive or made that way by his creator rejecting him? Interpretations differ, but the message endures: don't play God (or become a parent...

Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. Sex and romance isn’t always the same thing,...

The story behind the novel is almost as famous as the novel itself: in the summer of 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband Percy Shelley traveled to Lake Geneva on a trip with her stepsister Claire Claremont and Claire’s lover, poet Lord Byron. Because of the abnormally cold weather, the foursome were forced to stay indoors for nearly the entire trip, and to pass the time, Byron proposed a challenge to see who could write the scariest ghost story. Mary, a woman with a taste for the macabre, was inspired by a discussion of galvanism, a scientific theory that electricity could stimulate or create life, to write what she first thought would be a short story: the tale of a young, ambitious student playing God and creating an abomination in the process.
From that idea came quite possibly the most influential and iconic horror novel in history. Published two years later in 1818, “Frankenstein; or,...

February continued January’s downturn at the box office, with two new wide releases and a hotly-anticipated Super Bowl Sunday to keep anything from doing particularly well. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Of the two new wide releases, Focus Features’ romantic horror-comedy “Lisa Frankenstein” was probably the most high-profile one, but otherwise, much of the chatter this weekend was about an impending sporting event and whether a certain pop star might attend.
Even though Matthew Vaughn‘s star-studded action comedy, “Argylle,” took a massive 63% plunge in its second weekend, it still managed to retain first place with a weak $6.5 million, which is back down to the level of the top movies just two weeks ago. It has grossed $28.8 million domestically so far, which isn’t great considering the cost to Apple Studios to buy and release it. It added another $9.4 million internationally this weekend for a global take of $60.1 million so far.

Plot: A coming-of-Rage love story about a teenager and her crush, who happens to be a corpse. After a set of horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a journey to find love, happiness – and a few missing body parts.
Review: It seems as though 2023’s obsession with Frankenstein is continuing into 2024 as we get yet another version of the Mary Shelley story. But this one feels decidedly more Weird Science than the more macabre tone of, say, the Kenneth Branagh version. And with Diablo Cody behind the words, I suppose that’s not exactly a surprise. Juno took over the world and pretty much-changed dialogue in teen cinema, so expectations were high for the film. And this is her return to the genre after a long absence. But, like Jennifer’s Body, Lisa Frankenstein feels more like lost potential than anything.

This article contains major spoilers for "Lisa Frankenstein."
Hollywood has its eyes on "Lisa Frankenstein." The '80s horror comedy marks the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams, the return of Diablo Cody to the teen horror comedy subgenre for the first time in 15 years, and has the potential to be the first big box office hit of 2024. If you had told me four years ago that one day an '80s-set zombie rom-com featuring "Freaky" star Kathryn Newton and Cole "Jughead Jones" Sprouse would be one of the most anticipated releases of the year, I'd wonder how you got a time machine and where you put my diaries.
Given its tone and delightfully odd story, "Lisa Frankenstein" is sure to be a polarizing film. It's an '80s film to its core, not just in its setting, but also in its approach to comedy. Many have compared the film...

Only melodramatic soft rock can fully conjure the necromantic schmaltz of Lisa Frankenstein, a new comedy about a teenager seducing a long-dead corpse. So JoJo recorded an extra kitschy rendition of Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling” for the picture.

Author Mary Shelley has inspired horror creators since the 1800s, but never like Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams brings Diablo Cody's undead teen romance to life like the second coming of early Tim Burton, harvesting an uncanny gothic romance from spare human parts. It's caught somewhere between Riverdale, Edward Scissorhands, and Warm Bodies, a good crossroads to call home. Williams and Cody inject surges of teen girl empowerment through their morbidly adorable Frankenstein tale, which can feel like a hammy 1980s sitcom, yet transcends expectations with an avalanche of campy, almost wall-breaking silliness.
Kathryn Newton shines as the horror-loving Lisa Swallows, a high school recluse who rarely speaks after the axe murder of her mother. Lisa now lives as a black sheep with her cheerleader stepsister "Taffy" (Liza Soberano), high-strung stepmother Janet (Carla Gugino), and easygoing father Dale (Joe Chrest). “Weird Science” for lonely goth chicks who spend all of their free time reading sad poetry in the graveyard behind their evil step-mother’s house, the admirably deranged if frustratingly undead “Lisa Frankenstein” might be one of the more irreverent riffs on Mary Shelley’s immortal horror novel, but there’s also something full circle about bringing that story back around to the kind of teenage girl who wrote it in the first place.
In other words, Zelda Williams’ directorial debut — a bloody rom-com about a grieving outcast who accidentally wishes her favorite Victorian era corpse back to “life,” and then starts killing people in order to replace her Bff’s rotted parts — isn’t just a cute pun in search of an ’80s throwback to go along with it.

A totally killer paranormal love story inspired by Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel is headed to the screen with Lisa Frankenstein, written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and directed by Zelda Williams. Lisa Frankenstein comes to theaters on February 9, 2024.

The opening of the cheekily-titled Lisa Frankenstein tells you all you need to know at the start: After a Tim Burton-esque credit sequence detailing the short, sad, tragically unmarried lifespan of The Creature (Cole Sprouse), we flash-forward to today—that is, 1989—where sparkly goth teenager Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) traces an etching over his gravestone. Like one of her peers doodling an imagined married name in her notebook, she caps off the “Frankenstein” with her own name scrawled in fuchsia lipstick. All this is set to When In Rome’s yearning banger “The Promise,” an ambitious needle drop that director Zelda Williams and writer Diablo Cody’s film unfortunately never quite fulfills.
It should be a killer mashup of a premise, but the emotional underpinnings don’t even reach six feet deep. Not about Lisa and The Creature’s forbidden love as two misunderstood misfits, nor the Heathers-esque killing...

Much like a certain devious scientist reanimates a corpse in Mary Shelley's landmark 1818 sci-fi horror novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus," those who grew up loving "Jennifer's Body" transformed the 2009 film from a box office bomb into a cult classic. Now, 15 years after her initial venture into the sub-genre, "Jennifer's Body" scribe Diablo Cody has finally returned to the horror-comedy pool for "Lisa Frankenstein," an original '80s-set flick inspired by Shelley's literary classic.
There's no missing the parallels between "Jennifer's Body" and "Lisa Frankenstein," both of which are coming-of-age stories examining the hellish experience of being a girl in high school with plenty of laughs and gore to spare. In fact, Cody has gone ahead and proclaimed that the pair even share the same continuity. "I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe [as 'Jennifer's Body']," she informed Deadline, speaking at the "Lisa Frankenstein" premiere.

Screenwriter Diablo Cody says she’s interested in rebooting the 2009 cult horror comedy, Jennifer’s Body. “I never lost my passion for that world,” she says.
Diablo Cody’s returning to the horror comedy genre this year with Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams. As its name implies, it’s another modern spin on Mary Shelley’s gothic tale, with Kathryn Newton starring as a young woman who revives the corpse of a Victorian gentleman and proceeds to turn the creature into her ideal lover.
In an interview with Deadline, Cody has revealed – perhaps half-jokingly – that Lisa Frankenstein takes place “in the same universe” as her earlier horror comedy, Jennifer’s Body, released in 2009. There won’t be any obvious nods to that film, though, so it sounds as though this is something Cody had in the back of her mind as she was writing rather than a concerted attempt to create a franchise.

Diablo Cody returned to the horror-comedy genre with Lisa Frankenstein and is now declaring that her previous film, Jennifer’s Body, takes place in the same universe.
“I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe,” Cody told Deadline during the premiere of Lisa Frankenstein. “I have decided that. I will not say that you’d see any overt references to that but I’m saying it.”
Jennifer’s Body is a 2009 horror comedy that Cody wrote starring Megan Fox in the titular role. The film follows a high school student who becomes demonically possessed following a sacrifice and kills her classmates to eat their flesh in order to survive. Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, J.K. Writer/Producer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and director Zelda Williams have teamed up to deliver an outrageously ’80s new spin on Mary Shelley’s classic novel with Lisa Frankenstein, set to arrive in theaters on February 9, 2024. Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cody and Williams about their collaboration.
In Lisa Frankenstein, “Set in 1989, the film follows an unpopular high schooler who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”
The Coming of Rage love story stars Kathryn Newton (Freaky), Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”), Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things) and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room).

What do you get when you have a series with a trio featuring a half-oni/half-human, an immortal severed head in a bird cage, and a tough-as-nails maid that can beat up just about anyone? You get a really fun show in Undead Murder Farce , but also a series that has style for days. The stylistic decisions with regard to shot composition, character and environmental design, scene transitions, music, and generally how it looks — amongst other aspects — elevate the show to becoming not only more fun to watch, but something that’s pretty special as well.
