Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot is as charming, inconsequential and uplifting as you may imagine any animated musical is today. It broods charm and charisma to an almost sickly extent, albeit perfectly adequate for its target audience. Filled with charming and satisfying musical numbers that are undeniably effective. It might be hyperbolic to call Smallfoot the most dangerous film of the year, but it wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Yes, there’s a wholesome message at the back of what Karey Kirkpatrick (who co-directed with Jason Reisig and co-wrote with Clare Sera from a previous script that itself was based on Sergio Pablos’ book Yeti Tracks) has put onscreen, but it’s not difficult to misconstrue its meaning if you’re motivated to do so. Ask him and he’ll say it’s a story about not lying to those you love to “protect” them from external oppression because that itself is oppression. And it’s also about a community of bigfoots finding common ground with a community of smallfoots despite long-standing historical acrimony. Is this starting to sound familiar?
On its surface Smallfoot stars a genial yeti named Migo (Channing Tatum) who believes his life is perfect.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller may be executive producers on “Smallfoot,” but the movie feels like a pale imitation of their unique comedic energy. The double entendre-laden humor and catchy tunes that made “The Lego Movie” a hit are woefully missing from “Smallfoot,” a musical that tries too hard to educate kids and not hard enough to entertain them.
The premise of “Smallfoot” is inventive enough — what if Bigfoot not only existed, but lived among a whole clan of other bigfeet in a highly advanced society on a mountaintop above the clouds? Such is the adorable village where we meet Migo (Channing Tatum), a simple gong-ringer’s son who wants nothing more than to grow up and continue his father’s (Danny DeVito) legacy. What, you may ask, is a gong-ringer? It’s not good to ask too many questions in this village, but…the gong-ringer rings the gong every...

Producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra have generally kept a wide berth between their kid-friendly projects and their more adult material. The best parts of “Smallfoot” see them finding a middle ground, espousing plot points and messaging that you don’t usually find in family fare.
Lurking within this animated tale of yetis and humans are such forward-thinking notions as, “Question everything, including religion,” “Governments use public safety as an excuse for misleading the populace when they really just want to control people,” and “Tribalism benefits people in power more than the communities they claim to want to protect.”
Heady stuff for a mainstream cartoon, but unfortunately “Smallfoot” can’t bear the weight of its big ideas, saddled as it is with fairly mediocre animation, mostly forgettable songs and a resolutely by-the-numbers screenplay by director Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) and Clare Sera, adapting Sergio Pablos’ book “Yeti Tracks.”

Actors and screenwriters came together Saturday night to support the young women involved in WriteGirl at the organization’s annual Lights, Camera, WriteGirl! event.
The organization empowers girls to share their voices with a community of female writers. In the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, Calif., scenes and monologues written by the girls earlier in the day were performed by actors Keiko Agena (“Gilmore Girls”), Kelsey Scott (“How To Get Away with Murder”), Aasha Davis (“Friday Night Lights”), Adam Tsekhman (“Legends of Tomorrow”), and Ted Cannon (“Justified”).
The scenes ranged from comical discussion between a health conscious father and his junk-food-loving daughter to an emotional monologue where a boy wished he was no longer invisible. After the skits, a panel of screenwriters provided commentary about the writing style.

Exclusive: Following her exit from the executive suites of Warner Bros after steering Gravity, Magic Mike, Man Of Steel and others over a decade, Lynn Harris was rumored to be headed for a multitude of exec jobs that included being part of former boss Jeff Robinov’s new shingle. She instead chose to become her own boss. Harris has partnered with her husband Matti Leshem in Weimaraner Republic Pictures, a company that will generate content in film, TV and digital. They have quietly set up a bunch of projects at studios around town, and I only found out about their overall plans when Deadline revealed the heated auction for the Tony Jaswinski girl-vs.-shark pitch In The Deep, which Sony acquired as two other studios circled in the water.

If the phrase ‘Adam Sandler-starring romantic comedy’ doesn’t fill your heart with dread and terror then you’ve probably not been paying too much attention to film criticism in recent years. That’s okay, neither has Adam Sandler. The reviews are generally terrible and yet Sandler has rolled out at least one comedy every year since 1998, which is undeniably impressive. Presumably these films make money, else he wouldn’t be able to make them and therefore it’s logical to suggest that people are going to see them. It’s almost as if the general public couldn’t care less about critical opinion. Huh.
I wouldn’t include myself as a member of the critical fraternity, by the way. I...

Chicago – Two things save “Blended” from getting a zero star review. Number one is the still palpable chemistry between Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. Number two is the occasional chuckle courtesy of Wendi McClendon-Covey as Barrymore’s business partner. Otherwise this is a barren laugh-free safari through Africa that doesn’t even have the benefit of Al Pacino trampling on his prestigious career for our amusement.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
“Blended” never sinks to the astonishingly awful lows of “Jack And Jill” or “That’s My Boy.” Both of those films had ideas I couldn’t believe had ever made it to the silver screen. But I won’t soon forget them, as hard as I may try. “Blended” is both painfully unfunny and bland and boring.
I feel a little sorry for Drew Barrymore’s career these days, because the closest thing she’s got to a dependable leading man is Adam Sandler.

Chicago – Trying to understand the psychology and philosophy of manchild Adam Sandler, when it comes to his “middle-age” movies, will perplex film scholars and therapists for generations to come. His latest excuse for a “family comedy” is the insipid and exploitative “Blended.”
Rating: 1.5/5.0
There is a strange dichotomy in these Sandler comedies – see also “Grown-Ups,” “Jack and Jill” and “That’s My Boy” – that desires to be warm explorations of family, but at the same time wants to showcase the sixth grade level baby humor that is Sandler’s bread and butter. And make no mistake, despite “screenwriters” and “directors,” the mark on these films is all Sandler, who most likely goes over each line with his staff of sycophants, giggling at every change he makes. If your idea of hilarity is Sandler riding an ostrich, or Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal doing a sex dance, then go to movie alone...

This time out the pair play single parents Jim and Lauren who, after a disastrous blind date at Hooters, find themselves thrust together on an African safari holiday. Unfortunately, Blended falls flat from the off despite an endearing performance from Barrymore and palpable chemistry between her and Sandler (who's always better when in the company of his Wedding Singer co-star). Scriptwriters Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera...

You know those real estate scams where you're offered a free vacation if you just sit through a time-share presentation and that time-share presentation seems never-ending, because even if it's just two hours, what you really wanted was a free vacation? For Adam Sandler, filmmaking is like that time-share presentation. All the guy wants is to get major motion picture studios to subsidize his vacations. Is that so wrong? If Sony or Warner Brothers said to you, "How would you like an all-expenses-paid trip to Hawaii or Africa or a secluded lake? And all you have to do is deliver a movie and nobody on our side will even ask to see a script or bother looking at the final cut," what would you say? You'd accept the deal. Don't deny it. It's obvious that Sandler and his partners-in-vacation-loving-crime don't especially enjoy the quid pro quo required for their global galavanting,...

Adam Sandler goes to Africa, via the tampon aisle, and assumes you’ll agree with him that racism and sexism are family values worth celebrating. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): I hate Adam Sandler and everything he stands for
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Attempting to determine the very worst thing about the oeuvre of Adam Sandler is akin to trying to decide which sort of cancer is the most horrible: even to finally settle on one isn’t to say that all the rest aren’t blights on humanity. But I think I may now have it.
It’s the smugness. The Sandler smug reaches a new nadir of appalling with Blended. For everything is presented with the same self-satisfied confidence that the audience is entirely onboard with the indisputable fact of every assumption with which the film presents us.

Chicago – Standing out among the crowd of young actors is a daunting task, but Bella Thorne is up to the challenge, portraying Adam Sandler’s teenage daughter in the new film “Blended,” which also features Drew Barrymore.
In addition, the 16 year old actress has conquered series TV, having starred in Disney Channel’s “Shake it Up.”

Annabelle Avery “Bella” Thorne was born in Florida, and first dipped her toe in show business as a child and teen model. After expanding into acting, Thorne got her first big break in the TV series “My Own Worst Enemy” (2008). After doing some independent films, she got the lead in the Disney Channel series, “Shake it Up,” portraying CeCe Jones. Art imitated life for that show, because Thorne’s character had dyslexia, a condition that Thorne herself has in real life.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star in Blended, in theaters May 23, 2014.
Blended marks the third comedy collaboration between Sandler and Barrymore, following their successful onscreen pairings in the hit romantic comedies “50 First Dates” and “The Wedding Singer.”
After a disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren (Barrymore) and Jim (Sandler) agree on only one thing: they never want to see each other again. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they are all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week.
Watch the first trailer below.
This looks hilarious!
Blended also stars Joel McHale (NBC’s “Community”) as Lauren’s ex-husband, Mark, and Wendi McLendon-Covey (“Bridesmaids”) as her best friend, Jen; Kevin Nealon (“Weeds”) and Jessica Lowe (funnyordie’s “RobotDown”) as an overly romantic couple also vacationing at the resort; Terry Crews (“The Expendables 2”) as the resort...

Community star Joel McHale is going to join Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in their upcoming new romantic comedy for Warner Bros.
The story follow a "recently divorced mother of two boys, Lauren Reynolds, and widowed father of three girls, Jim Friedman, [who] have a disastrous blind date that puts them off dating for the foreseeable future. However, when the two purchase a discount 'Familymoon' vacation from Lauren’s best friend and business partner, Jen, they wind up at an African resort with their kids in tow. Initially acrimonious, their relationship skews, gradually and irresistibly, towards romance."
McHale will play Barrymore’s ex-husband in the film, which is being directed by Frank Coraci from an original script by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera. Hopefully the movie turns out good. I like McHale, I think he'll make the film that much more enjoyable.

Pair follow up The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates with new film set at family resort, directed by Frank Coraci
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are to pair up for the third time on a new comedy that revolves around the fallout from a disastrous blind date, reports Variety.
Sandler and Barrymore previously co-headlined 1998's The Wedding Singer and 2004's 50 First Dates, both of which were considered box office successes. The Wedding Singer even managed to be that rare concern in Hollywood, the well-reviewed Adam Sandler movie.
The new film will centre on two people who find themselves stuck together in a family resort with their children from previous marriages after the aforementioned disastrous romantic coupling. The Wedding Singer's Frank Coraci, a regular Sandler collaborator, will direct from a screenplay by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera.
Both Sandler and Barrymore will be returning to familiar ground in the hope...

15 years after the release of "The Wedding Singer" and nine years following the release of "50 First Dates," Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are joining forces for yet another rom-com. The duo, both suffering from a bit of a downswing in their respective movie careers, are set to co-star in a new untitled comedy to be directed by "Wedding Singer" helmer Frank Coraci from a script by Ivan Menchell ("Jonas," "Phil of the Future") and Clare Sera, according to Variety. When news broke that Adam Sandler had shelved plans to make Paramount’s comedy Western The Ridiculous Six (it needs more script tweaks) and switched to a new, untitled film for Warner Bros., talk almost immediately turned to his Wedding Singer partner Drew Barrymore as a possible co-star. Well, to almost no-one’s surprise, she’s decided to reunite with him for the film. The movie itself is still in need of a name, but it has a director, another Sandler veteran, Frank Coraci, and a script by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera.Sandler and Barrymore will play a couple who, after a disastrous blind date, are stuck hanging out together at a family resort with their children from previous marriages. Who wants to guess that romance may blossom between the pair? Also, slapstick. But a family resort? It would appear that Sandler’s once again looking to get a...

It’s official – Drew Barrymore will join Adam Sandler in an upcoming (and still untitled) comedy which comes from director Frank Coraci! And although (almost) everything about this project is still a mystery, the above mentioned duo was pretty good in The Wedding Singer, so I guess we have nothing to worry about (right?) So, at this moment we know that Coraci will direct the movie from an original script written by Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera. The comedy will reportedly center on a couple – Jim and Lauren – who, after disastrous blind date, are stuck together in a family resort with their children...

We leap from one Adam Sandler project to the next. Maybe I was right about the whole "a new month, a new Sandler movie" thing. This project sees Sandler working again with Drew Barrymore. The untitled comedy for Warner Bros. will see the two as single parents who after an awful blind date wind up stuck together at a family resort with their children from previous marriages. Yikes. Frank Coraci (Click, The Wedding Singer) will direct a script from Ivan Menchell and Clare Sera....

Thanks to The Cog, we're privy to a lot of inside information on projects currently in development. Unfortunately, there's not a lot we can do with many of those projects. When there's not a big name attached to it, or where it's not a sequel or a remake, it rarely rises to the level of newsworthy. But I hate for all that information to go to waste. Bad ideas are great fodder for a site like ours -- you folks have a tendency to feed off Hollywood's stupidity. I'd like to offer a vehicle for that.
So, today we introduce a new feature: Green Light This! I'll give you the loglines to three movies currently in development -- and in most cases, this will be content exclusive to Pajiba -- and you determine which of the three projects is the best candidate for a green light. In the month's ahead,...

Writer-director Karey Kirkpatrick has inked a two-year, first-look production deal with Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films under his newly formed Blue Shirt Prods. label.
Kirkpatrick, whose helming credits include DreamWorks Animation's Over the Hedge and Paramount Pictures' upcoming The Spiderwick Chronicles, will focus on providing live-action family fare for Paramount Pictures labels Nickelodeon and MTV. The pact does not cover animation as Kirkpatrick remains exclusive to DWA in that genre.
First up for the Blue Shirt/Nickelodeon partnership is Captain Abdul's Pirate School, based on a book by Colin McNaughton. The family action-comedy is being penned by Kirkpatrick along with writing partners Chris Poche and Clare Sera, with Kirkpatrick attached to direct.
"My last two films have been with Paramount/Nickelodeon, and I have a long history with DreamWorks, so this is really a perfect place for me to start this new chapter in my career," Kirkpatrick said. "I'm excited about branching out and continuing my slow but steady quest for total world domination."
Blue Shirt will concentrate on family and romantic comedies.
