- Father of Jeremy Schaap, with whom he co-hosted a weekly radio program, The Sporting Life.
- Inducted into the Center for the Study of Sport in Society Hall of Fame, at Northeastern University (2001).

- Inducted into the Cornell University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985 for men's lacrosse and the "special category".
- Older brother of William Schaap. Dick Schaap wrote : "I write, mostly to entertain, to make people smile, perhaps even laugh. My brother writes, mostly, to incite, to make people angry, perhaps even to act.".
