‘Mary Magdalene’
Thirteen months after Mary Magdalene perished at Australian cinemas, the Biblical saga directed by Garth Davis probably did not have a prayer of getting a warmer reception in the Us.
So it proved last weekend as the See-Saw Films production starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor was released on 62 screens by IFC Films.
Meanwhile Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai continues to earn tidy sums in the Us for Bleecker Street/ShivHans Pictures. The thriller starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Jason Isaacs and Tilda Cobham-Hervey collected $863,000 in its third weekend wide, playing on 617 screens.
The film produced by Basil Iwanyk, Gary Hamilton, Mike Gabrawy, Julie Ryan, Andrew Ogilvie and Jomon Thomas has generated $8 million in the Us, outperforming Australia’s $3.1 million after five weekends, never having recovered from opening on the same weekend as the Christchurch massacre.

Jason Isaacs and Nazanin Boniadi in ‘Hotel Mumbai.’
The timing could not have been worse: Hotel Mumbai opening in Australian cinemas the day before the horrific slaughter of innocents at two mosques in Christchurch.
Anthony Maras’ thriller based on the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai is a superbly-made film but the subject was not something that many Australian cinemagoers wanted to experience amid the shock and grief over events in Christchurch.
Released by Icon, the film co-written by Maras and John Collee, starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, opened in second spot, taking $979,000 on 268 screens and $1.06 million including previews.
To be fair to the producers, Basil Iwanyk, Gary Hamilton, Mike Gabrawy, Julie Ryan, Andrew Ogilvie and Jomon Thomas, that is not a bad result and receipts may well build on word of mouth – but my guess is the total would have been at least $500,000 higher...

For Robert Connolly, 2019 is the year when filmmakers will need to rise to the challenge of the massive success of TV drama by offering unique experiences.
For Sue Maslin, the primary goal is for all players in the screen industry to take a more active part in understanding and shaping theatrical features instead of operating like a stack of dominoes in which “each falling tile triggers the movement along the value chain.”

LevelK has acquired the comedy-drama “H is for Happiness,” which marks the feature debut of Australian theater director John Sheedy.
Based on Australian author Barry Jonsberg’s popular young adult novel “My Life as an Alphabet,” the film follows Candice Phee, an optimistic 12-year-old girl from a small coastal town who is determined to bring her family back from the brink while facing the trials of adolescence. The novel was adapted by Australian screenwriter Lisa Hoppe, whose credits include the award-winning short “Heck.”
“I have always admired films such as ‘Little Miss Sunshine,’ ‘Pretty in Pink,’ ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ and most Wes Anderson films and it is the influence of these filmmakers and styles that will help [me] create a film that will be truly unique and full of quirks, pathos and humor,” said Sheedy.
Sheedy has a strong track record of directing theatrical works aimed at families and young people.

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

Typifying a growing buoyancy and sense of optimism about filmmaking in South Australia, producers Julie Byrne, Kristian Moliere and Jennifer Jones have formed Triptych Pictures.
The troika has just delivered its first factual entertainment series for the ABC, Jillaroo School, and shooting wraps today on its first feature, Touch.
Jillaroo School (6 x 30.) follows the journeys of the women who undergo a course to train as jillaroos under the tutelage of experienced horse master Bill Willoughby.
Writer-director Christopher Houghton.s Touch is a thriller about a mother and daughter who are on the run, hiding in a remote hills town, starring Leeanna Walsman, Matt Day, Greg Hatton and 12-year-old tyro Onor Nottle.
.It.s very hard to be a solo producer or even a duo,. Byrne tells If. .With three you have a critical mass and each brings different ideas. We are all drama-oriented and we want to get into TV series drama.

It was the men of Miami who took center stage on the latest episode of "The Real Housewives of Miami." Now usually, viewers can count on the women to cook up some reason to be at each other's throats on a weekly basis, but this week it was their men. At least the fight was about the women, so they were still involved in some capacity from the beginning.
Adriana and Joanna's fiances, Frederic and Romain, got into a heated argument about their ladies on Twitter, and then they ran into one another at Alexia's magazine party. They quickly picked up in person where they left off online.
“You re-Tweet something, you need to re-Tweet?" Romain accused. "Oh, look at you, you guys must be so unhappy. Look at both of your faces.”
Alexia seemed okay with the fight erupting at her party. As she saw it, "As long as...

It was a surprisingly vulnerable Joe Giudice that emerged on the latest episode of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey." He confessed to his wife, Teresa, that he was scared about the idea of going to prison. But, of course, this is Joe. Even vulnerable, he was aggressive and cursing like a sailor.
“I don’t belong there and I don’t f*cking want to go there, but you know, you never know what the f*ck could happen," he said. "”It’s not like I want to be away from you or my kids. You know what I mean? That’s the last thing I want to do, be away from my kids. That’s what keeps me going every day.”
Buddy TV's Jennifer Lind-Westbrook found the scene hard to watch, seeing as viewers now know that the couple was indicted on 39 counts of fraud and related crimes...

Some shocking allegations floored everyone at "The Real Housewives of Orange County" reunion during the third and final special. Even more surprising, the allegations about Vicki's on-and-off-again boyfriend, Brooks, came from Vicki's own daughter, Briana.
“You told my husband to start hitting me and you’re not sorry for that? F*ck you!" Briana shouted at Brooks. "It’s on recording! It’s on a recording! I heard your voice. You told my husband, 'You need to start hitting Briana to get her to fall in line!'”
“Listen to me, I was drunk and angry and, yes, I’m sorry I said that," Brooks admitted. Then, Briana revealed that she was physically abused as a child, "And you tell my husband to start hitting me.” It was outrage and disbelief. Briana was right about the recording, too. It does exist and has been posted in its entirety on Radar Online.

It was Target: Gretchen Rossi on Part 2 of "The Real Housewives of Orange County" reunion special. At the heart of the women's collective attack against Gretchen was their belief that she was lying all the time. They also accused her of being fake on camera. WetPaint's Ryan Gajewski described the hour as "jaw-dropping."
The hardest blow came when the women said Gretchen orchestrated her elaborate proposal to her boyfriend, Slade, as a television stunt -- Isn't everything on this show a television stunt? This accusation brought Gretchen to tears ... or at least a close proximity to tears.
The Stir's Julie Ryan Evans thought those tears were as fake as everything else Gretchen's accusers were slinging her way. "Her eyes didn't seem to be even the slightest bit damp, but she moaned and made some crying-like noises for a bit. Her thick (Thick) mascara didn't even budge. It was painful to...
