Well this is a pretty weird story. It appears that another one of Chuck Klosterman's books is headed to the big screen, and the people behind it are none other than Tom Ruprecht, a writer for The Late Show with David Letterman, and Craig Finn, frontman for popular indie rock band The Hold Steady [1]. Huh? The duo have optioned the rights to Fargo Rock City, Klosterman's first book, a semi-autobiographical memoir of growing up in the midwest throughout the '80s as a fan of heavy metal. It will join Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story, the other Klosterman book that is currently in development [2] as a feature film. Fargo Rock City actually seems a fair bit more suitable for a film adaptation, and according to Risky Business [3], Ruprecht and Finn will be focusing more on the idea of a group of nerdy high school seniors in search of themselves,...

In an awesome fusion of television, literature and music, pop culture writer Chuck Klosterman’s memoir will be hitting the big screen.
Klosterman, author of the best-seller Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs, was born in Minnesota but raised on a farm in North Dakota. His youth as a fan of heavy metal in a small, rural town provided the inspiration for his 2001 memoir Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota.
Such a story by such an author seems like something it wouldn’t take Hollywood too long to grab hold of, and sure enough it has. The rights to Fargo Rock City were recently bought, and is in the works to get turned into a screen adaptation by an unlikely pairing.

Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota, Chuck Klosterman's 2001 memoir chronicling his time growing up in North Dakota and banding together with the few other metal-heads in his high school, has been acquired by Craig Finn, frontman of The Hold Steady, and Tom Ruprecht, longtime writer on "The Late Show with David Letterman." The duo will be co-writing and producing the feature, a screenplay set in the 1980s revolving around a group of high school senior social misfits who attempt to break out of their geeky stereotype by living the life of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. According to THR: "The pic will concentrate on particular portions of the book, including a chapter in which a faulty Atm dispenses excessive amounts of money to Klosterman, which both Finn and Ruprecht say they see as metaphors of the gilded age and easy credit of both...

Chuck Klosterman has always been the writer darling of pop-culture-obsessives, tackling topics like The Real World and pop music in essay collections like Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, which was ubiquitous in nearly every dorm room while I was in college. It's surprising, then, that it's taken this long for Klosterman's writing to make it to the screen. According to THR Klosterman's memoir Fargo Rock City will be adapted into a film by the strange pair of Tom Ruprecht, a former writer for Letterman, and Craig Finn, lead singer of the rock band the Hold Steady. Klosterman's book chronicles his coming-of-age in 1980s North Dakota, at a high school where he was the only kid who liked heavy metal. The screenplay version, naturally, will focus on a group of friends, but pretty much with the same geeky interests. .Seventeen or eighteen is the perfect age for characters in a movie...

If there's a writer who is perfect to make more out of a music and Midwest memoir than the original text offers, it might be Craig Finn, singer and lyricist for The Hold Steady. Finn and longtime The Late Show with David Letterman writer Tom Ruprecht have picked up the rights to Fargo Rock City, the coming of age chronicle by music-geek author Chuck Klosterman. The novel doesn't actually take place in Fargo, and it's not about a band. Instead, it is a chronicle of Klosterman's high school youth, where he banded together with friends over a love of rock and metal, with a special fondness for the hair metal bands of the time. THR reports on the deal and says that the film, which is currently being first-drafted by Finn and Ruprecht, will focus on a couple of specific points in the book, like the episode in which an...

Photo: Hoffman/Getty The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn will try his hand at screenwriting when he co-adapts author Chuck Klosterman’s 2001 memoir Fargo Rock City for the big screen. After acquiring the rights to produce the film, Finn and Late Show With David Letterman scribe Tom Ruprecht will co-write the script, based on Klosterman’s life as a heavy metal fan experiencing high school in 1980s North Dakota. Klosterman will also produce the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Business blog, the memoir will turn into a coming-of-age film centering on a group of friends on the brink of graduation trying...

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.
