- I have only one superstition, and that's the number 33. 'Waiting for Godot' was number 33. One of my sons is named Beckett. There are many authors that I loved dearly, but if I have to single out one it's easy.
- Painters are more gregarious than writers. Writers go and hide.
- One funny thing was meeting [Samuel] Beckett and Henry Miller together. They didn't want to have the meeting because both had a feeling of really hating each other. But they actually got along very well. And both of them came to me separately afterwards and said, you know, he's a lot better than I thought He's mellowed.
