Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

When the Emmy nominations for lead comedy actress were announced this year, it was quite a pleasant surprise to see Allison Janney’s name back on the list. Janney had last been nominated for “Mom” in 2018, and with the CBS sitcom wrapping things up in May after eight seasons (170 episodes), this was her final chance at another Emmy for playing Bonnie Plunkett on the show.
Janney won two Emmys in the supporting category for “Mom,” in 2014 and 2015; she later moved to the lead actress field, where she was nominated twice. But “Mom” hadn’t been on the TV Academy radar lately, hence the surprise. But this now gives Janney another chance to make Emmy history. With seven Emmys under her belt, with one more, she will tie Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late Cloris Leachman for most acting wins ever by a female performer.

One of the best comedies on TV concluded Thursday night, but not how fans expected.
Many fans expected an appearance from Anna Faris.
The actress bowed out at the close of Mom Season 7, with fans learning on Mom Season 8 Episode 1 that she got accepted to law school in Washington, DC.
It was a decent way to close off her Christy's arc, but many believed the character would pop up in some capacity on the series-ender.
Mom showrunner and co-creator Gemma Baker opened up to TV Line about the lack of Anna Faris.
"We felt that it was important to honour [Faris'] decision to leave the show," she shared.
"The audience knows that Christy travelled a great distance over seven seasons and overcame so many obstacles in order to follow her dream of becoming a lawyer, and it felt like that story had been addressed in a satisfying way, so we didn't revisit it for the finale.

Mom has ended its run with an emotional series finale, but one person who wasn't on hand to bid the show farewell was Anna Faris. The actress, whose character, Christy, was written out of the popular CBS sitcom last year after season seven, had not made any appearances during this final eighth season. While the show has continued to succeed by focusing on Christy's mom, Bonnie (Allison Janney), some fans were still hoping Anna would at least make a cameo during the finale that aired Thursday, May 13. After the show aired, showrunner Gemma Baker spoke with a number of media outlets to share insight into why the Scary Movie star wasn't involved as the show called it...

Mom Series Finale: EP Reflects on Bonnie's Last Share, Adam's Uncertain Fate and Jill's Happy Ending
Bonnie Plunkett endured a veritable cocktail of intense emotions during Mom‘s series finale – but never once did she consider pouring herself a stiff drink.
In the CBS comedy’s farewell episode, Allison Janney’s alter ego gained a new outlook on her sobriety after a whirlwind 24 hours. First, she met fellow addict Shannon (played by Two and a Half Men‘s Melanie Lynskey) and convinced her to give Alcoholics Anonymous a chance. (It was no coincidence that Shannon’s complicated relationship with drug-addled mom Jolene, played by Mike & Molly‘s Rondi Reed, mirrored that of Christy’s pre-recovery relationship with Bonnie.

After eight seasons, 170 episodes and 10 Emmy nominations, “Mom” comes to a quiet and unexpected end this week. However as the series wraps, there’s no denying the legacy it leaves behind when it comes to the depiction of recovery on television.
When the series first bowed in 2013, co-creator Gemma Baker wanted to expand on what she had previously seen as limited takes on addiction and recovery, with characters that either relapsed at the first sign of trouble or got a happily ever after with no further exploration. “Mom” may have gone through several iterations over the years as the story expanded into an ensemble show, but through it all sobriety itself was always at the center of the story.
“In terms of recovery the characters got to change in a way that you don’t often see on a sitcom,” says Baker. “They got to grow and become different versions of themselves.

“Mom” will last only one season without Anna Farris. CBS is ending the popular comedy after its current eighth season wraps up.
The series finale is currently scheduled for May 6. Faris exited the sitcom ahead of the season last September, which left Allison Janney as the sole star.
“Mom” featured Faris and Janney as mother-daughter duo Christy and Bonnie Plunkett who rekindled their relationship after years of alcohol addiction. Faris’ character was also a single mother of two. “Mom” also stars Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kristen Johnston.
The beginning of this season opened with Bonnie (Janney) and her husband Adam (William Fichtner) having dropped off Christy (Faris) at the airport. Christy, who had been going to law school in Northern California, where the show is set, is now going to Georgetown Law School on a scholarship.

CBS’ praised Mom — the network’s longest-running comedy series on the air — will end its run after the current eighth season. Mom‘s series finale has been set for May 6 in its Thursday 9 p.m. time period.
This is the last season of Mom’s two-year pickup the Chuck Lorre-produced multi-camera comedy received in 2019. Also coming up at the end of this season was the current contract for star Allison Janney, who became the series’ sole lead after the exit of Anna Faris last summer.
Eight seasons in, Mom remains a solid ratings performer and an anchor of CBS’ Thursday comedy block. Currently Mom is CBS’ No. 4 comedy behind The Neighborhood and Lorre’s Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola. (The Neigbrhood and Bob Hearts Abishola were renewed earlier today; a pickup for Young Sheldon is expected.)

Anna Faris is leaving the CBS multi-cam sitcom “Mom” ahead of the show’s upcoming eighth season.
“The past seven years on ‘Mom’ have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”
Per an individual with knowledge of the decision, Faris wanted to pursue other opportunities beyond the show. News of her exit comes just days ahead of the show beginning production on Season 8, with cameras set to start rolling on Sept. 14. Production is getting a late start this year due to the shutdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a major shakeup, CBS’ sitcom Mom is losing one of its two title characters. Anna Faris will not be returning to the series for its upcoming eighth season, leaving Allison Janney as the sole lead.
The move is surprising. Both Faris and Janney are in the middle of two-year contracts they signed in spring 2019 after lengthy negotiations. Their new deals secured a two-year renewal for the Chuck Lorre comedy through Season 8.
I hear Faris’ exit was finalized early into the show’s hiatus, and the writers have been writing the new season without her character, Christy. Her absence will be addressed in the upcoming season, which is slated to start production September 14 in Los Angeles.

Eddie Gorodetsky, a producer and writer who has long worked closely with Chuck Lorre, is striking out on his own with a multi-camera comedy series in the works at CBS.
“Extended Family” is described by the network as an unconventional family ensemble comedy. Written and produced by Gorodetsky along with Warner Bros. TV, it follows a brother and sister who are at ground zero when a family secret sends shock waves through an already dysfunctional family.
Gorodetsky most recently co-created the freshman CBS series “Bob ♥ Abishola” along with Lorre, Gina Yashere and Alan J. Higgins. Prior to that, he’s worked with Lorre almost exclusively for 20 years. He, Lorre and Gemma Baker co-created “Mom,” which stars Allison Janney and Ana Faris on CBS. Gorodetsky also worked on several of Lorre’s hit series, including “The Kominsky Method,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “The Big Bang Theory.” Gorodetsky has also...

CBS has renewed praised comedy series Mom for a sixth season. The pickup makes it a clean sweep for top comedy producer Chuck Lorre, with all three of his CBS shows already renewed for next season five weeks before the May upfronts. Mom joins veteran The Big Bang Theory, which will be headed into its 12th season, and hot newcomer, Big Bang spinoff Young Sheldon, which was renewed for Season 2. As Lorre often does on his series, word is that he delivered the news of Mom‘s renewal at the multi-camera comedy’s wrap party last night.

This year, there are over 20,000 people who get to select the nominees and winners of the Emmys, and hundreds of shows are vying for their attention. In 2016, we were struck by some of the creativity that studios and networks used in pushing out the word about various shows.
Things seemed more subdued on a street level in 2017, though Emmy campaign expert Rich Licata told IndieWire that the networks did seem plenty active when it came to advertising buys.

“A lot of it unfortunately has turned into white noise,” Licata said, “because there were so many programs and so many networks that I don’t know how a responsible voter can really focus and say, ‘Ok, I’m going to watch all this.'”

Comedy mastermind Chuck Lorre was an auteur all along. It just took “Mom” to make you realize it.
The CBS comedy, starring Allison Janney and Anna Faris as a mother and daughter both in recovery, is by far the most personal of Lorre’s career. The creator behind shows such as “Grace Under Fire,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” has been open about his own path to sobriety, a topic that is central to “Mom.”
“Broken people trying to repair their lives, I can relate to that,” Lorre recently told IndieWire. “I know a lot of people that can relate to the comedy in the repair business of a person’s life. I think we’re all in the process of doing a little mending.”

Stephanie Laing isn’t a familiar name in the online video world, but that’s about to change. The director and executive producer of HBO’s Veep will launch the female-centric online comedy network Pypo on January 4, 2016.
Pypo, which is an acronym for Put Your Pretty On, was founded earlier in 2015 by Laing and Susan Paley, a former executive from Beats by Dre. The new comedy network will feature original content like sketch videos, editorials, and animations. These creations will all focus on a different theme each week, such as why women say they’re sorry all the time or what it means for a woman to “have it all.” Every Monday, Pypo will also release a weekly themed e-mail newsletter dubbed The PYPEline, followed up by a Thursday issue covering user-generated content from that week’s highlighted theme.
The idea for Pypo originated about six years ago, when Laing...

One of the big topic of conversations among TV-watchers this fall: Why do the major networks keep refusing to cancel their crummy, unwatched new shows? Either there's nothing in the pipeline to replace these duds, or we're reached a stage where studios and producers are thinking more about Netflix, Hulu et al. than winning a Nielsen night. Since nobody knows what might eventually become prime binge-watching fodder, why scrap a series after only three weeks? So as long as the sets are already built and the actors are under contract,...

One unexpected side effect of Peak TV in America has been the way lines between categories of TV shows have blurred to the point of being non-existent. Is "Orange Is the New Black" a comedy or a drama? What should we call "Transparent"? Is "Fargo" a series of miniseries, or not, because some characters recur in each season? The only place this confusion really matters at all is come awards time, where the Emmys keep scrambling to make sense of things. But the trend reflects a desire to make shows that reflect a distinct creative vision, categories be damned. If Louis C.K. wants to tell fart jokes on "Louie" one week, he can, and if he thinks the story needs to be darker and more introspective the next, great. The one type of show that has stayed largely immune from that confusion is the traditional multi-camera sitcom. A "Big Bang...

CBS’ Mom has booked the mother of all guest stars. Ellen Burstyn is set to appear in Season 3 of the CBS sitcom as Shirley Stabler, the estranged mother of Bonnie (Allison Janney) and grandmother of Christy (Anna Faris). “Ellen Burstyn plays [Bonnie’s] biological mother, who put her in foster care when she was very young,” Mom co-creator Gemma Baker told reporters last night at CBS’ Television Critics Association press tour party. “Of course, Bonnie has a lot of feelings to work through, and Christy as well. It’s a difficult reunion. We’re so excited Ellen wanted to do it.” Burstyn is slated to make her Mom debut in Episode 3 of this upcoming season, but she won’t be the only major guest star in the episode. Nebraska‘s June Squibb will also appear in the third episode of Season 3, playing Dottie, who is described as Christy’s “ideal grandmother,” and yes,...
