Kansas City Confidential
Written by George Bruce and Harry Essex
Directed by Phil Karlson
U.S.A., 1952
From across the street in a quiet hotel room, a man (Preston Foster) attentively observes the coming and goings of security guards that transport hundreds of thousands of dollars to and from the bank across the street. A plan is brewing in his mind, a plan that will require the assistance of three pawns, all known criminals. They are: small time gambler Pete Harris (Jack Elam), cop killer Boyd Kane (Neville Brand) and Tony Romano (a young, moustache-free Lee Van Cleef). Each is invited to the man’s room on separate occasions, presented a plan to steal the doe from the guards and make a getaway. Everyone is to wear masks so that no one participant can rat on any other in the event that things go awry. For the masked convicts themselves,...

Lovelace
Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman
Written by Andy Bellin
USA, 2013
In Billy Wilder’s excellent 1951 drama Ace in the Hole, which is a classic showcase of media manipulation, ambitious city-slicker reporter Chuck Tatum (played by an enthusiastic Kirk Douglas) finds himself stuck in Albuquerque, New Mexico with hopes to find that one big story that will jettison him to the big-leagues again. Tatum lucks out when he is informed about a man trapped in a cave-in and uses this opportunity to break big. When Tatum’s photographer asks why this will make a big story, Tatum responds that it’s a “human interest” subject and that if you can get readers to sympathize with the narrative then you have the reader’s attention. But, he also elaborates that a human interest story has to focus on one person; if you focus on others involved with the story,...

The story of Linda Lovelace unfashionably links blue movies with domestic violence, and owes a lot to Boogie Nights – but it raises a deeper issue, too

It's sometimes said that in the smiling face of every Hollywood star something awful can be glimpsed if you look hard enough. Something in the glaze of the eyes, or the set of the teeth – the suppressed memory of that entry fee paid at the beginning of a movie career: the casting-couch humiliation or nauseating debasement long ago, when the star was a powerless youth. That came back to me watching this interesting, heartfelt if flawed study of Linda Boreman, who as "Linda Lovelace" was the star of the smash hit 1972 porn film Deep Throat; she was briefly in the celebrity vanguard of that porno chic which famously failed to impress Cybill Shepherd in Taxi Driver (1976) and whose...

Overcoming gender stereotypes in Hollywood can be a difficult process for many young actresses as they enter adulthood and start searching for mature roles to define who they truly are, both professionally and personally. Amanda Seyfried, who rose to fame in her breakout role as the dimwitted Karen in Mean Girls, is striving to prove her ability to emotionally and accurately portray a struggling, but determined, character in her new film, Lovelace. The independent biographical drama not only allows the actress to transform Linda Lovelace’s initial naivety into determination to break free from the pornography business, but also allows Seyfried the chance to prove she can anchor sophisticated roles.
Lovelace chronicles the phenomenon of Deep Throat, the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda Boreman (Amanda Seyfried) discovered freedom and the...

Deep Throat’s Journey: Epstein & Friedman’s Porn Star Biopic By-the-Numbers
In their first outing not placing significant focus on the recuperation of queer subjects or thematics, filmmaking duo Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman turn to one of the most salacious historical moments concerning heteronormative sex with Lovelace, a biopic on the star of the infamous Deep Throat. While this sophomore feature effort from the documentarians feels far less experimentally pieced together than their 2010 Allan Ginsberg piece, Howl, their approach feels a tad static this time round and, perhaps in effort to be tasteful, almost too sterile. Despite its trappings of the generic biopic dressing, some engaging lead performances tend to outshine its standardized format.
Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), born Linda Boreman, became the first pornographic celebrity superstar with her one and only film, Deep Throat in 1972. A kind of good girl, an unexpected pregnancy as a teen caused her working class parents (Sharon Stone,...

James Franco is no stranger to playing real people on the big screen, so this latest casting news comes as no surprise. Variety reports that the actor is deep in talks to cameo as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner in the Amanda Seyfried-starring Linda Lovelace biopic, simply titled "Lovelace."
If cast, the Oscar nominee would be reunited with his "Howl" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. The film follows the story of real-life porn star Lovelace, who rose to notoriety as the star of porn flick "Deep Throat." Franco potentially could be on set for the film for only one day, shooting a scene in which the film screens at the famed Playboy mansion and he, as Hefner, has a talk with Lovelace, real name Linda Boreman.

As far as we know there are dueling Linda Lovelace projects currently under production, one of which stars Amanda Seyfried to play Lovelace and Peter Sasgaard for the role of her husband and accused pimp and abuser Chuck Traynor.. And now the film is adding four more names to the cast. James Franco, who we've come to know and love as an actor who defies expectations, is eying a role as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner (after being initially offered the lead of Chuck Traynor) in "Lovelace," Variety reports. If the deal goes through it would reunite Franco with his "Howl" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. He would be joining a cast that already includes Amanda Seyfried (as the famous "Deep Throat" porn star Linda Lovelace), Peter Sargaard (because whereever there's a weird movie about sex, Sarsgaard can be found) and a host of new cast members who have recently signed on. The trade is also reporting that several new high profile cast members have joined the project, including Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, and Mr.T-1000 himself, Robert Patrick. Azaria will play "Deep Throat" writer-director Jerry Damiano, Cannavale and Noth will play financiers Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano, who,...

The cast of Lovelace, one of two competing biopics [1] about porn star and eventual anti-porn crusader Linda Lovelace, has added four actors and might be getting a high-profile fifth. Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, who co-directed Howl, have already got [2] Amanda Seyfried to play Lovelace and Peter Sasgaard for the role of her husband and accused pimp and abuser Chuck Traynor. Now they have roped in Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth and Robert Patrick to play various roles, and may have Howl headliner James Franco onboard to play Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. Variety [3] broke the news, saying that Azaria will be Deep Throat director Jerry Damiano, whose film made Lovelace a star; Cannavale and Noth will be Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano, who financed Deep Throat; and Patrick will play Lovelace's father. If James Franco does play Hugh Hefner, he'll likely only have a bit of screen time.

Chris Noth and Bobby Cannavale (pictured) will play the film’s financial backers, Anthony Romano and you-can’t-make-this-name-up Butchie Peraino, respectively. And Robert Patrick will star as Linda’s father, John.

Shiney Ahuja's last film Hijack may have bombed at the B.O. but instead of sitting and brooding over it, Shiney has moved on big time. In fact Shiney is all excited these days and the reason behind it is that he has just signed his first Hollywood film. The film in question is Silver Cord, a romantic sci-fi thriller that has Shiney playing the lead role along side Hollywood superstar Val Kilmer. What is however most interesting is the fact that unlike other Bollywood actors who have played mostly Asian characters in Hollywood films, Shiney will be seen playing an all-American character in Silver Cord thus becoming the first Indian actor to do so. Silver Cord is directed by James Ordonez and produced by Mark Canton (of 300 fame), Michael Shane and Anthony Romano (producers of Catch Me If You Can). Apparently, director James Ordonez first came across Shiney...
