For many years, true cinematic darkness — the indispensable bass note of any cinematographer’s melody — was a struggle to achieve on television screens. Limitations in capture, transmission and display have been overcome in no small part due to the stubborn vision of directors of photography including Roy Wagner, John Bartley and Bill Roe (“The X-Files”) and Jonathan Freeman (“Boardwalk Empire”).
The latest controversy involving a darkly lit “Game of Thrones” episode marks another stage in this evolution, but the main takeaway may be the astonishing extent to which the show’s fans are engaged — less-than-ideal home viewing conditions notwithstanding.
Fabian Wagner, the director of photography behind the episode that has millions discussing contrast ratios, says for every complaint he has heard, a dozen or more have communicated their compliments.
“The whole thing was driven by a creative decision to depict the subjective experience of being in a battle,” says Wagner.

This episode of Castle gets the mystery spot-on, even if it's missing the show's usual Beckett-Castle chemistry...
This review contains spoilers.
7.21 In Plane Sight
It’s not often that Castle goes outside its comfort zone. And still less often that it does it well. But In Plane Sight was just such an outing, and a real treat for mystery fans.
On one level, this is a surprise. After all, this episode has few of the hallmarks of what faithful viewers tend to think of as key to a good Castle tale. In Plane Sight takes place entirely during the course of a transatlantic flight on the always-tragic Oceanic Air (Oceanic Air/Airlines/Airways is the commonly used name of an airline company where bad air stuff always happens—think Lost or Executive Decision) during which Rick and Alexis are on their way to London to have a little father-daughter bonding-time.

Castle finally delivers a satisfying, surprising Christmas and mafia-themed episode. Here's Laura's review of Bad Santa...
This review contains spoilers.
7.10 Bad Santa
What a relief!
This season of Castle has not been one of their best. From ridiculous plots (involving inter-dimensional travel) to non-existent ones (where any useful evidence is withheld until seconds before the killer is revealed) to the explanation that is nothing of the kind (Rick ran away from last season’s wedding to do what exactly?), it’s been pretty disappointing. So honesty, I wasn’t expecting much this last week. And that’s especially sad considering the episode, Bad Santa, includes two actors I generally love: Vincent Spano and Paul Ben-Victor. But their appearances did have me expecting a mafia-related episode, and I think that was probably the only thing I guessed right. I was certainly wrong about the level of quality I expected.

Few people have as much insight into the rise and run of "The X-Files" as Frank Spotnitz.
Spotnitz joined the show as a writer in its second season and worked as a writer/producer until the Fox drama ended its nine-season run. He rose to the level of executive producer, directed episodes of the show and worked on the "X-Files" movies that were released during and after the show's run.
None of it was easy.
Part of the reason an obscure show that aired on Friday nights rose to such heights of popularity and influence was because Chris Carter, the show's creator and executive producer, was a demanding boss.
"He was really uncompromising," Spotnitz said in an interview about his time on "The X-Files." "He didn’t care if you didn't like him because he was being so difficult, but he just insisted that you do your best."

On Sept. 10, 1993, a show called "The X-Files" premiered on Fox, and just over 20 years later "Breaking Bad" will air its series finale on AMC. Those events have a lot more in common than you might think.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of "Breaking Bad," got his start in television by writing for "The X-Files." He was toiling away as a film writer and living in Virginia when a meeting with "X-Files" creator Chris Carter changed his life.
"I learned everything I pretty much know about TV from 'The X-Files' and from working for Chris, and from working with ['X-Files writer/producers] Frank Spotnitz and John Shiban," Gilligan said in a phone interview with The Huffington Post. "It was a great learning experience, and one that I always liken to film school, except it was a film school that paid me to attend."

ABC Studios is coming out with a slew of television DVD releases once fall approaches, and the pack of offerings run the complete gamut of reaction possibilities. From your favorite shows, to television's biggest "oh my God, that's still on" titles, to "Woops, there goes that show," it's all coming for your viewing and owning pleasure.
Of course, all of these shows have their fans, and ABC has put together nice packages on their previous releases, and these are no different.
Whether you love or hate the shows, they are at least upping the game a bit on DVD release bonus features. I suppose it's becoming mandatory as audiences demand it, and DVD sales (apparently) are slipping in general, but I find that TV shows feel like they are lacking without them even more than films. Something about the long-term investment, fan status, and apparent ease of creation, I suppose.

Opens: Friday, July 25 (20th Century Fox)
Ten years after the first "X-Files" movie -- and six since the conclusion of the iconic TV series -- Fox's paranormal-investigation franchise returns to theaters. Unlike 1998's "The X-Files: Fight the Future," the new movie skirts the series' notably paranoid mythology to focus on a relatively standard criminal inquiry, albeit one informed by supernatural incidents. In both scope and execution though, "I Want to Believe" has more in common with its television origins than its motion picture predecessor.
Fox kept the film's plot under tight wraps and held down the production budget, hedging against the potential downside of reintroducing a lukewarm, though popular, franchise. Initial boxoffice should be fairly responsive as loyal "X-Files" fans fill theaters, but with little originality to offer the uninitiated, returns will likely taper off quickly, because the film hardly warrants repeat viewings.
"I Want to Believe" reintroduces the investigatory team of former FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) -- a vociferous adherent of alien abduction, government conspiracy and other fringe theories -- and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), a sober-minded physician specializing in forensics, who together pursued a series of mysterious X-Files cases for the bureau.
Six years have passed since Mulder and Scully left the agency. The pair now resides in an unanticipated state of domesticity, with Scully practicing pediatrics at a Catholic hospital while the discredited and reclusive Mulder pursues his obsession with paranormal media accounts.
The mystifying disappearance of an FBI agent in wintry West Virginia convinces Special Agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) to bring Mulder in from the cold to help evaluate claims made by Father Joseph Crissman (Billy Connolly). An avowed psychic and defrocked pedophile priest, Father Joe is having visions of the missing agent that led the FBI team to a man's severed arm buried under the snow that's somehow connected to the case.
After another local woman vanishes and more dismembered body parts surface, Whitney increasingly relies on Mulder to coax leads from Father Joe. Ever rational, Scully and Whitney's colleague, Agent Mosley Drummy (rapper Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner), scoff at the priest's alleged supernatural ability, as the principal characters progressively battle individual crises of faith.
Rather than a creepy supernatural thriller, "X-Files" creator Chris Carter, who directed "I Want to Believe" from a script co-written with producer Frank Spotnitz, spins a second-rate "Silence of the Lambs"-type serial killer mystery. Despite a few evocative early scenes, adequate atmospherics are noticeably lacking until the final reels, when the plot has already descended into implausibility. Overall, the film plays like an improbably skewed but comparatively routine criminal procedural that would have served the original show well as an extended season opener or sweeps-week contender.
Although Duchovny and Anderson display some muted chemistry, it isn't enough to fully ignite the narrative. Connolly cleverly capitalizes on his role as the erratic priest, though the other performances are almost consistently dour. Carter's unimaginative visual style, mired in literalism, can't much buoy the movie either. The other technical contributions are workmanlike, with only Mark Snow's score evoking an appropriately eerie mood.
