Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders lead nominees for the upcoming Dgc Awards with three each.
The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

It’s the Oscars! The 90th Academy Awards are being held tonight in Tinseltown in the Us of A and we’re with you all the way to the final praising open of the envelope for Best Picture. All the nominees and winners and absolutely none of the red carpet sideshow nonsense here…
Will this be the year of Three Billboards? Or will del Toro’s enchanting fairy tale The Shape Of Water run riot through the winner’s list? It’s fairly likely that no one film will dominate the results as has happened in previous, duller years. What is cause for celebration is the elevating of debut directors Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig whose Get Out and Lady Bird have don’t much to instill hope in even the most jaded film watcher. After “The Shape of Water” upset “Phantom Thread” at the Costume Designer Guild Awards, there’s Oscar momentum for costume designer Luis Sequeira. And there might even be an upset in the sound effects or sound mixing categories, given the potential coattail effect for Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture frontrunner. Academy members just might also be in the mood for something less bombastic than “Dunkirk.”
An Aquatic-Looking Wardrobe
Sights and sounds were both anchored in the reality of Cold War America in 1962. However, Sequeira took it further with an aquatic-looking wardrobe for mute custodian Elisa (Oscar-nominated Sally Hawkins), that’s perfect for her romance with the Amphibian Man (Doug Jones). This consisted of a green and turquoise lab uniform along with complementary attire for her personal life (not to mention a collection of vintage shoes for toe-tapping fun).

Guillermo del Toro pulls an Alfred Hitchcock in “The Shape of Water” by making a cameo appearance in his own film, but leave it to one of the world’s most imaginative filmmakers to come up with the most imaginable cameo possible. The movie’s supervising sound editor Nathan Robitaille confirms to Vanity Fairy that del Toro appears in “The Shape of Water” as the fish creature’s breath, so you’ll have to listen closely to spot the cameo.
Robitaille worked closely with del Toro to get the sound of the fish just right. Because the fish has to be an object of desire to the main character and is essentially the film’s co-romantic lead, Robitaille’s biggest challenge was finding sounds to represent that. He recorded pigeons cooing, for instance, to layer into the sound during the creator’s more tender moments on screen, like when Elisa fills the bathroom with water.

The nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards are in and Guillermo del Toro's fantastic film, The Shape of Water, did pretty damn good as it leads the pack with thirteen of the nominations! Those include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and more. This was one of my favorite movies of the year, so it was great to see it get a lot of love.
Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk ended up with eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. Jordan Peele's Get Out also landed a few nominations including Best Director, which was cool!
As expected, James Franco and his film The Disaster Artist got snubbed amid sexual misconduct allegations surrounding the actor.

Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.
The voters also choose Gabrielle‘s Gabrielle Marion-Rivard as Best Actress in a Leading Role, while the heavily favored Enemy grabbed five awards, Best Direction for Villeneuve, Best Original Score for the excellent Danny Bensi/Saunder Jurriaans pairing , Best Editing,...
