The leader of the American Federation of Musicians proclaimed that Hollywood labor is “in a new era” as dozens of members of various entertainment unions came to the doorstep of studio labor negotiators in support of the start of his union’s contract negotiations on Monday.
As an early drizzle that morning turned into driving rain, members of the Writers Guild of America, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE and Teamsters Local 399 rallied in front of the Sherman Oaks offices of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers with picket signs, and a few umbrellas, in hand. To AFM’s chief negotiator and international president Tino Gagliardi, this kind of unity for musicians was unlike anything he’d seen in his time in union leadership. “We’re in a new era, especially in the American labor movement, with regard to everyone coalescing and coming together and collaborating in order to get what...

“Picketing Disney Is More Fun Than Writing a ‘Star Wars’ Movie”: Scribes Mark 100 Days of the Strike
Resolve and solidarity were the common refrains Wednesday as writers marked the grim 100-day milestone in the Writers Guild of America’s ongoing strike against Hollywood’s studios and streamers. Joined on the picket line by the similarly striking performers union, SAG-AFTRA, caffeinated scribes celebrated the two unions’ collective resolve on the day that WGA negotiating committee co-chair Chris Keyser called “an anniversary of shame for the AMPTP.”
Eric Robbins (Star Trek: Discovery), the lot coordinator at Disney, said the atmosphere Wednesday was positive, noting that the 100-day marker “rejuvenated and really invigorated” writers to return to the picketing, which he said “pumped a lot of lifeblood into the line.” After Friday’s meeting between the WGA and AMPTP yielded no signs of when both sides would return to the bargaining table, he said scribes have “as much passion and as much solidarity as we did on day one.”

Two time Grammy-nominated band Code Orange announce today their new album The Above, releasing September 29th via Blue Grape Music!
The first album since their critically acclaimed 2020 Underneath, is self-produced by Jami Morgan and Eric “Shade” Balderose with engineering by Steve Albini.
Accompanying the album announcement, the single and music video for the track “Take Shape” which features guest vocals from Billy Corgan is a throwback to when music videos were at peak importance, combining nostalgia with a modern twist, notes the release.
Inspired by an era where film was at its peak quality, but beginning to give way to the digital era “Take Shape” picks up where “Grooming My Replacement” left off. The protagonist, played by Morgan, escapes his captives, arriving in a technicolor, ‘Truman Show’-esque stage play of reality. Incredible cinematography brings the video through a number of sets and stages arriving at a ‘Vanilla Sky’-inspired roof scene.

The album marks Code Orange’s follow-up to 2020’s Underneath. The new album was self-produced by band members Jami Morgan and Eric “Shade” Balderose, with engineering by Steve Albini (Nirvana).
“Take Shape” follows the singles “Grooming My Replacement” and “The Game”, which were released earlier this year. While Morgan handles lead vocals throughout the track, Corgan’s distinct voice can be heard around the 2:40 mark in the music video below.

Grief-fueled romantic fantasies can be tricky for filmmakers not named Wim Wenders. Everyone aspires to make “Wings of Desire” with its stirring immediacy, beautiful imagery and pressing poignancy, but most wind up delivering something closer to its decent but dreary American remake, “City of Angels” — which could also be said for writer-director Claudia Myers’ “Above the Shadows.” This magical-realist fairy tale, about a young woman feeling so isolated and insignificant after a tragic loss that she’s literally invisible to everyone except one other struggling soul, is certainly imaginative and intelligent in its ideas. However, the savvy smarts within don’t quite sustain the running time and, much like its protagonist, the film becomes transparent in its motives and sentimentality.

“They took everything away from me; now, I’m going to leave them with even less.” Stepping outside your comfort zone creatively is never easy, yet Ti West does it so effortlessly with his latest film, In a Valley of Violence, that you can’t help but wonder if he’s secretly been making Westerns on the side throughout his career. His affection for the genre is evident with every single frame in this ode to Spaghetti Westerns, and his confidence as a storyteller has never been higher than it is here. Simply put, In a Valley of Violence is a masterpiece and officially my new favorite film from the highly talented director who has already given us genre fans so much to love over the last 15 years.

Don’t let the title mislead you: In a Valley of Violence is only Ti West’s second non-horror film. This time around, West tackles the Western with a tonal twist. In an inspired bit of expectation-reversing casting, this classic saga of a violent town on the frontier has John Travolta as the good guy and Ethan Hawke as the villain. The film premieres tomorrow at SXSW. In advance, cinematographer Eric Robbins answered some questions about shooting on 2-perf 35mm, lighting in the desert and his longtime collaboration with West. Filmmaker: How and why did you wind up being the cinematographer of your film? […]...

A group of journalists visit a seemingly idyllic commune in Ti West's horror, The Sacrament. Here's Ryan's review of an effective film...
“What we lack in modern comfort we more than make up for in humanity,” says Charles Anderson Reed, the charismatic leader of Eden Parish - a devoutly Christian commune located in a remote part of South Africa. His devoted followers live in small wooden huts (or cottages, as the leader romantically refers to them), work the land and gather for worship in the evening.
Vice Magazine journalist Sam (Aj Bowen) heads to Eden Parish to find out the story behind the commune. He's joined by his faithful cameraman Jake (Joe Swanberg), and a photographer, Patrick (Kentucker Audley), whose sister Caroline (Amy Seimetz) joined the collective in order to get over a nasty drug habit. When the group arrive, they find what appears to be a utopia. Food...
