Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

Lee Daniels' The Butler dropped $500,000 from Sunday's estimates for a weekend total of $16.5 million, bringing the Oscar contender's cume to $51.7 after two weeks. The film still remains at #1 for the second weekend in a row followed by We're the Millers, which continues to perform well and is nearing $100 million domestically after only dropping 27% this week. Coming in third, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones didn't budge from its estimated $9.3 million opening as the film brought in a grand total of $14 million in five days. Not exactly the kind of opening that suggests a sequel is in order. I wonder if plans to begin production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes in October are still underway. In the fourth slot, Edgar Wright's The World's End dropped a smidge from an estimated $8.9 million to a final of $8.7 million. Coming in seventh was Lionsgate's well-reviewed, but little seen new horror,...

Dropping $400,000 from Sunday estimates, Lee Daniels' The Butler still remains at #1 for the weekend with $24.6 million as the next move the Weinsteins will navigate is how to maneuver an Oscar campaign. After The Butler we slide down to fifth where we find Kick-Ass 2, which dropped another $200,000 below estimates to settle down at $13.3 million. While this is a poor result and most likely has Universal execs wondering why they took over the franchise from Lionsgate, given the $28 million production budget it's not a complete disaster. Similarly, Jobs actuals didn't move an inch as the film finished with $6.7 million, a disappointing number, but not a nightmare given it was operating with a $12 million budget. No, the disaster is Paranoia starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, a film credited with having the worst opening for a wide release this summer and the estimates were spot on as it turns out.

The final box office numbers are in and Elysium slid from the estimated $30.5 million to $29.8m, but still remains the #1 film for the weekend over second place We're the Millers, which finished with $26. 4 million proving audiences love them some R-rated Jennifer Aniston. Disney's Planes held on to the #3 slot with #22.2 million, while Fox's Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters lost $200,000 from its estimated total for a weekend number of $14.4 million. These were the four films in this weekend's RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge, but outside of updating the results I really couldn't care less about these numbers. More interesting is the $2.3 million Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine brought in from only 119 theaters ($19,709 per) along with the $13.4 million Fruitvale Station has brought in from a maximum of 828 theaters so far. Believe me, while Fruitvale looks to be sliding on my Oscar charts now, I imagine a late November, early December DVD/Blu-ray release...

The official box office results are in and The Wolverine came in almost $2 million less than originally estimated for an official $53.1 million opening weekend domestically, the lowest opening yet for any of the X-Men films (source. Worldwide it came in just under $140 million. The Wolverine had an impact on the Accuracy Leaderboard as well as it came in $13 million lower than the reader average of $66 million, which caused for some movement on the Accuracy Leaderboard. At the same time the reader average was exactly right for our next film and yet no one had the exact number... In second was The Conjuring with $22.2 million, only a 47% drop from last weekend. The racing snail better known as Turbo dropped only 36% from its lackluster opening weekend for a $13.7 million sophomore weekend. Finally, of the films that were open for predictions, Fruitvale Station expanded to 1,064 theaters and clocked $4.5 million, a number three of...

The official box office results are in and The Conjuring boosted its total an extra $300,000, coming in at $41.8 million for the weekend, a massive result for an entirely new property and with an "A-" CinemaScore this one could have legs for a long, long time. In the animated realm of Turbo, the film fared a little worse than originally estimated as it brought in a meager $21.3 million for the three-day and only $31 million for its first five days in theaters. Budgeted at $135 million that's not exactly what Fox and Dreamworks were hoping for as it fell behind Despicable Me 2, which is in its third week in release and still managed to bring in $3.6 million more than Turbo this weekend. As for Red 2, it dropped $500,000 from its estimated number to an even $18 million. Finally, Universal's R.I.P.D. dipped only slightly from estimates, bringing in $100,000 less than estimated for a weekend actual of $12.6 million result.

The official box office results are in for the weekend and the top three all dropped almost $1 million each below Sunday's estimates, which certainly provides a bit of a shake-up when it comes to your predictions. The #1 film this weekend was Despicable Me 2 and the dip was a little more steep than estimated as it brought in $43.8 million followed by Grown Ups 2 with $41.5 million and Pacific Rim at $37.2 million. The reader predictions have been updated and 63 of you have now scored at least one point, in just a couple weeks the second leaderboard will be revealed, tracking your overall prediction accuracy, so on top of the point system, we will begin tracking just who is the most accurate. I'm sure some will argue the second leaderboard will be the true test of your prediction skills. As for the point leaderboard, here's the current top ten, but you can...

The RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge leaderboard has been updated after Despicable Me 2 dominated the domestic box office over Disney's The Lone Ranger and each week is proving to be quite the challenge as some early winners have yet to follow-up with big wins and a couple of readers are chipping away, gradually moving up the leaderboard. Beyond the top titles there isn't a lot to talk about beyond the success of Kevin Hart's concert picture Let Me Explain, which brought in $17.3 million in five days and Pixar's Monsters University crossed the $200 million mark. As I already mentioned, in just a couple weeks a second leaderboard will be revealed, tracking your overall prediction accuracy, so on top of the point system, we will begin tracking just who is the most accurate. I'm sure some will argue the second leaderboard will be the true test of your prediction skills. As for the point leaderboard,...

I've updated the RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge leaderboard after processing the results from this weekend's box office where Monsters University dipped about 45% for its second weekend at #1 with $45.6 million. The Heat and White House Down both came in $900,000 under their Sunday estimates with The Heat bringing in $39.1 million and White House Down ending the weekend with a disappointing $24.8 million. The other film readers were predicting was the second weekend of World War Z, which ended up dropping 55% for a $29.7 million weekend. In other news, Man of Steel crossed the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend -- $248.7 million domestically, and $271.7 internationally -- making it the biggest June release ever. With a reported budget of $225 million this is good news for Warner Bros. as the film is only 17 days into its overall release. As for that leaderboard, here is the current top ten, but you can see the full list of rankings right...

I was surprised how much more interested I was in the box office results this weekend now that we have more reason to evaluate the numbers than merely speculating over the likelihood of a sequel to lackluster franchise starters (or non-starters depending on your perspective) and the drop in week two box office. This weekend we started the RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge and the final numbers for the weekend have arrived and the leaderboard has been updated. This weekend readers were asked to predict the opening weekend results for Monsters University and World War Z, the second weekend for Man of Steel and the second weekend for Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, which expanded to 650 theaters. And after the first weekend of predictions we have a leaderboard of 17 names. Here's the top five with ties included: Rick (8 points) Driver (5 points) GregDinskisk (5 points) Jack Tyler (5 points) Austin Rains (4 points) Bustray...
