Jazz is a web. Because of the genre’s inherently collaborative, often mix-and-match nature, singling out a supporting player we like on a given record might lead us to dozens of other sessions featuring that same artist in various contexts. Or we might pick up a certain current in the music that crops up elsewhere, unifying albums that seemed to have little else in common. In 2020, when connection of any kind was scarce, these sorts of musical hyperlinks seemed all the more precious, a way to map and marvel at...

” He’s a loser. And losers’ve got to be respected. They’re the backbone of my business. They’re my customers, and I take good care of my customers.”
Returning to the city of his birth for inspiration, legendary maverick director Robert Altman helms an evocative, bullet-riddled tribute to the music and movies of his youth in Kansas City, a Depression-era gangster flick as only he could make one.
Blondie O Hara (Jennifer Jason Leigh) resorts to desperate measures when her low-level hood husband Johnny (Dermot Mulroney) gets caught trying to steal from Seldom Seen (Harry Belafonte), a local crime boss operating out of jazz haunt The Hey-Hey Club. Out on a limb, Blondie kidnaps laudanum-addled socialite Carolyn (Miranda Richardson), hoping her influential politician husband can pull the right strings and get Johnny out of Seldom Seen s clutches.

Joining such memorable events as Ornette’s week at Lincoln Center in 1997 and the celebration in his honor at Celebrate Brooklyn which was the last time he played in public and which is now documented in an incredible box set alongside the memorial held for him at Riverside Church and Wynton's own celebration of Ornette at Lincoln Center will be Ornette Coleman: Tomorrow is the Question, July 11–16 as part of their yearly indoor festival. There will be a four-part series honoring Ornette's work as a composer, innovator, and performer.
The evenings include a screening of Naked Lunch with live accompaniment by such giants as Ravi Coltrane, Henry Threadgill, Charente Moffatt, and Denard Coleman. Coleman will also be part of a Prime Time Reunion that will honor guitarist Bern Nix who sadly recently passed away and who had been a long time member of the original band. This night the members will include Joshua Redman,...

Happy birthday to Pat Metheny (born August 12, 1954), one of the few jazz superstars of the past four decades to combine commercial success and critical plaudits. After paying his dues in Gary Burton's band (which he joined at age 19), Metheny put out his first album in 1976 and by the time of his third release two years later was gaining crossover radio play. Though the style of his eponymous band was smooth and tuneful, Metheny had a firm basis in jazz and straight-ahead guitarist gods such as Jim Hall (with whom he eventually recorded a fine duo album).
With success came the challenge of avoiding complacency, which Metheny has met masterfully with a wide-ranging series of albums in a variety of stylistic bags, from atonal skronk to mellow Brazilian, from thorny Ornette Coleman covers to mercurial bebop. Along the way he has lent his prestige to both respected elders (Hall, Burton, Coleman,...

This is the point at which I'm supposed to ponder the immediate present and near future of jazz and improvised music. Not gonna do it. No matter how dire the straits of the music industry, changing distribution and presentation, etc., this music will continue to be made because it has to be made, and artists feel compelled to keep it going despite travails. It's all about the music and its amazing power for catharsis, its ability to lift us and inspire us. So without further ado, here's what inspired me most in 2011.
1. Richie Beirach: Impressions of Tokyo (Outnote)
I was going to call this a comeback, but Beirach (above) hasn't exactly been gone, certainly not as far as recordings are concerned -- he's had 18 released under his name in the past 11 years, plus collaborations (one of those appears further down this list). I guess I think of it as a...

The Walt Disney Records imprint, Disney Pearl is going back to roots with a jazz record release. The first 13 track collection, Disney Jazz Volume 1: "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat," spans decades of classics from Disney soundtracks, interpreted by jazz players like Dave Brubeck, Esperanza Spalding, Joshua Redman, and Dianne Reeves.
The 90 year old Brubeck plays on "Some Day My Prince Will Come" originally from 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and the main title theme from 1951's "Alice in Wonderland." Other selections include "It's a Small World," "Free the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)" from "Mary Poppins," an arrangement of "The Bare Necessities" from "The Jungle Book" and Redman's rendition of Randy Newman's ubiquitous "You've Got a Friend in Me," a hard act to follow.
The album, which releases February 15, 2011, derives it's title from the song "Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat," from "The AristoCats," Disney's jazzy...

The annual White House Tree Lighting is Thursday, Dec. 3 and "American Idol" season 6 winner Jordin Sparks will be on hand to sing.
Jordin is just one of several artists invited to the ceremony, which is traditionally when the President brings a message of peace to the nation before the giant White House Christmas tree is lit.
The tree itself is a Colorado blue spruce planted in 1978. It was 30 ft tall when planted and today is 46 years old and stands almost 42 ft tall. Just a little botanical info for you guys. We're a full-service blog here at Zap2it.
Besides Ms. Sparks, other performers joining in the festivities are Sheryl Crow, Common, Ray Lamontagne, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau and Celtic Woman.
The ceremony will be streamed live on The National Tree official website starting at 5 pm/2 pm Et/Pt Dec. 3.
Hopefully we don't see any "Real Housewives" storming the stage. Though...
